Revise the boundaries of Light of Christ School to allow junior high students from Our Lady of Fatima to attend. “FORCES FOR” “FORCES AGAINST” Closeness, transportation: two bus rides vs. one bus ride. Back with friends from Our Lady of Fatima. Concern about 2016/17 projections with 905 students with a building capacity of 705. Concern about direct effects to students’ learning. Safety for commuting. Concern about missed open houses; will that be addressed. Students have heard (Father Scollen) that it is an older school with not as much technology. Hard transition for junior high students – friendships, etc. Larger class sizes. Boundaries opening may cause problems with Skyview not being able to (?) even though it is close. Will other areas be able to come? Make exceptions for wider boundaries (such as Skyview). Transportation! Will the city put on extra buses? Widen route? Newer junior high. Are there the same sports/team options for students? Junior high and elementary students together – is it a concern? Bullying? Traditional track vs. year-round for high school. Better than travel to Father Scollen to go to Light of Christ. Many schools have worked with higher numbers. Many students would not need busing. Specialized programs would reduce numbers coming to Light of Christ. Near my home – good choice for our family. Would prefer to be at Light of Christ – transportation wise. Like the idea of Light of Christ being a new facility. Meeting Feedback – February 28, 2012 Page 1 Help Plan Our Future: Our Lady of Fatima / Light of Christ “FORCES FOR” Like the idea that grade 7 students have the opportunity to have CTS and shop. Staying with their peers is important. “FORCES AGAINST” Is there enough parking? Will there be a drain on the facilities; e.g., washrooms, gym facilities, etc. Everyone is in support at this table of revising the boundaries of Light of Christ School. Closer to home; yes, a good idea. Nice school. What high school would Light of Christ students go to? Also include Martindale. Makes sense transportation-wise; more time in school and not on the bus. Father Scollen too far away – a safety issue. Light of Christ close to Genesis (?) centre for afterschool activities. Space for students currently attending St. Rose. A no-brainer! No cons; all pros! Makes most sense for transporting students – less travel time/cost reduction. Technology current – newer facility. (x2) School is better utilized with Our Lady of Fatima students attending. CTS labs are here – cuts out cost of busing for CTS. Student/teacher ratio will be better as it is not at capacity! Light of Christ is the favoured choice. Proximity to school relative to St. Rose of Lime and Father Scollen. Convenience time (busing and walking). Safety – short walk to school. Could split some siblings in junior high/elementary. City busing concerns. Will the city change the bus routes between Taradale and Saddleridge? Time starting and ending school (to allow for drop off, pickup, as well as babysitting). Some friends in the school/connections (former students of Our Lady of Fatima at Light of Christ). Meeting Feedback – February 28, 2012 Page 2 Help Plan Our Future: Our Lady of Fatima / Light of Christ Other Comments / Options / Possibilities? Totally agree to the move!! May affect year-round at Father Scollen. Question: If families are currently in year-round at Father Scollen, can they switch to Light of Christ, traditional track for next year for geography and ease of travel? Allow Skyview to attend Light of Christ. Science and technology – Where is it housed? Is it going to St. Martha? Concern: Can I move my younger children from Our Lady of Fatima to Light of Christ so that all my children are together in the same school? Is it possible to have John XXIII as an option as well? Concern over junior high options – sports, teams, etc. What happens to year-round students who attend Our Lady of Fatima and attend the YRE track? Can they come to Our Light of Christ? What happens to YRE track? Questions: o Will all students automatically be enrolled at Light of Christ? o What is the capacity of Father Scollen? o What will happen to Our Lady of Fatima students in three years when they revisit the Light of Christ numbers and it is getting too full? Would Our Lady of Fatima students move? Where? Word Wall Can I move my younger children from Our Lady of Fatima to Light of Christ so that all my children (junior high and elementary) are at the same school? This is really the ONLY logical choice! (x8) As the district has not made any decisions about programs and where they are going, we as parents have not been able to attend any of the NE schools’ open houses. Will we be able to visit the schools that our children are able to attend? When the children go to different schools, what is the cost of transportation; i.e., family rate? How does this impact the school fees? Can we arrange a tour of this school? Please add or consider adding science technology program in this school. Thank you so much. I definitely agree that moving forward with changing the boundaries for Light of Christ to include Our Lady of Fatima School catchment would be a great idea. This seems to be the only positive idea that has come out of all four meetings in regards to the French Immersion changing to St. Rose. By making Light of Christ the junior high school designate for Our Lady of Fatima students is the safest, most efficient way for transporting children and school utilization. We are in favour of sending Our Lady of Fatima’s students to Light of Christ. Light of Christ is the only logical choice! Redirecting the Our Lady of Fatima HS students to Light of Christ is the only “logical” choice. I am pleased that the board visited this option! I trust it is the best for all concerned. We are hoping for a positive response in this matter. (x3) Very helpful and lots of information. In some case, students who live just outside the border of Saddle Ridge and communities like Martindale will need to travel such a distance early in the morning where they need to wait for buses and train. Financially it will benefit the Light of Christ School as well, considering the fact that they have the available facilities that are not being utilized or underutilized. Additional income from incoming junior high students from Our Lady of Fatima will be a welcome development for the school and at the same time being helpful for other students. I agree that if parents who would want to seek permission that their elementary children from Our Lady of Fatima should not be allowed to transfer for sole purpose of attending the same school with the students' siblings. Thank you for this chance given to us to share our opinion regarding the Help Plan Our Future concerning both Our Lady of Fatima and Light of Christ School. Sent: Re: Thu 23/02/2012 9:11 PM Our Lady of Fatima students going to junior high at Light of Christ I am unable to make it to the meeting. My children go to Our Lady of Fatima and my son will be going to junior high in 2013. I believe that Light of Christ would be a great school for my son to attend. It is close to our area and he could walk to school. It is the closest junior high in Martindale. The only concern I have is where is the LD satellite program going to move too? My son has learning disabilities, which will effect where he goes for junior high. I would like to see the satellite program moved to Light of Christ as well. It would be interesting to see what areas the LD students come from and see if it is feasible to move it to Light of Christ. When will we know where the satellite will be moved? If it had been discussed then I apologize for being absent. Would it be possible to consider Blessed John XXIII as one of the designated junior high schools for the Our Lady of Fatima catchment? As between Light of Christ and Father Scollen, I believe that Light of Christ would be our best option considering that this is nearer our Taralake residence. We know that St. Rose of Lima currently has programs for junior high sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, and hockey giving junior high kids an opportunity to join these sports. Are these also offered at Light of Christ? Meeting Feedback – February 28, 2012 Page 6
