About the Museum:
The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum serves as a dynamic memorial to social reformer
Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and her
colleagues whose work changed the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national
and international public policy. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House
site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision, linking
research, education, and social engagement. The Museum is located in two of the original
settlement house buildings: the Hull Home, a National Historic Landmark, and the Residents'
Dining Hall, a beautiful Arts and Crafts building that has welcomed some of the world's most
important thinkers, artists and activists.
Job Summary:
The Curatorial Manager at the Hull-House Museum will play a vital role in communicating the
history of the Hull-House Settlement and its relationship to contemporary issues of civic
engagement and social justice by developing, managing and coordinating exhibitions and
related programs. The position will be responsible for maintaining the permanent exhibition,
including making updates and improvements and working with Hull-House staff curators to
plan for a new permanent exhibition. The Curatorial Manager will also collaborate with staff
curators, artists, scholars, activists, and community groups to engage in long-term planning
to organize temporary exhibitions in three areas: contemporary social justice issues, critical
history interpretation, and socially engaged art. Reporting to the Director who serves as the
museum’s Chief Curator, the Curatorial Manager will also manage the collection and loans,
make acquisitions, conduct interdisciplinary research, develop exhibition-related
programming, contribute to publications, and expand the interpretation of the collection.
Job Responsibilities:
● Manage the research, planning, preparation, and execution of the recurring special
exhibitions that link the history of Hull-House Settlement to contemporary social
justice issues. Work with other staff to develop innovative themed programming on
public history that is historically accurate and culturally sensitive.
● Work with the museum director to oversee the acquisition, care and cataloguing of
the museum’s artifacts, including supervising a collections assistant.
● Perform historical research about the site’s history. Stay up to date on recent
literature pertinent to the museum.
● Work with museum staff to build partnerships with local and national community
groups, schools, and civic organizations, as well as local organizations and UIC units
to plan and implement museum projects and activities.
● Manage virtual exhibitions for the museum.

Prepare advertisements, announcements, program descriptions and press releases
to market exhibits and attract new audiences.
Assist in grant writing to federal, local, corporate and private foundations for support
for museum activities by composing program description, participation data and other
information and data.
Develop and execute program evaluations and reports for museum activities.
Train, supervise and schedule tasks for collections assistants, research assistants,
preparators, graduate and undergraduate student employees and/or interns.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Job Knowledge, Skills, Education, Experience: Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in history, art history, or related discipline required.
Three or more years experience curating exhibitions in a museum or cultural center.
Experience with community collaboration among diverse audiences, and/or experience with
community organizing. Ability to work with and develop programming for diverse populations.
Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to socio-ethnic and cultural communication style.
Strong knowledge of current standards in collections and exhibitions at cultural institutions;
knowledge of standards and innovative methodologies for informal education; knowledge of
standard and innovative methods of program evaluation.
Knowledge of the proper care and management of collections, standards of documentation
and ethics, exhibition organization and implementation, preparation of exhibition-related
publications and scholarship.
Demonstrated public presentation skills. Able to adapt presentations/content across age
groups and populations. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Grant
writing skills.
Desire to work collaboratively with staff from other departments.
