We invite you to join us on a journey between London and Dublin in the company of Stephen Segaller, executive producer of the PBS series Shakespeare Uncovered. The English-Speaking Union's mission to promote the beauty of the language and timeless themes in Shakespeare's works aligns perfectly with this itinerary. During our stay in London, we'll take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Globe Theatre, a faithful reproduction of the original that burned to the ground in 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII, and visit the remains of the Rose Theatre, the first purpose-built playhouse to stage a production of any of Shakespeare's works. Attending an evening performance at the Globe caps this day of discovery. Before embarking our deluxe five-star small cruise ship, L'Austral, right in the heart of London, we''ll take an overland excursion to Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon. The next eight days will have us calling at the highlights of the region: the perfectly-preserved medieval town of Bruges; the singular Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isle of Scilly, where tropical plans grown in abundance; Ireland's towering Cliffs of Moher, with their breathtaking sea views; and mystical Giant's Causeway near Belfast. Mr. Segaller will lead lively discussions and conduct lectures throughout the journey, exploring the idea that Shakespeare is "not of an age, but for all time." He will also discuss the production of Shakespeare Uncovered—a unique television program that combines history, biography, stagecraft, iconic performances, scholarly analysis, and the personal passions of its celebrated hosts. Spring is the ideal time to visit England and Ireland, when these destinations are alive with a poetic, wild beauty. We hoe you will join Stephen Segaller on this voyage as we trace the life and works of England's—and perhaps the world's— greatest playwright. Sincerely, Christopher Broadwell Executive Director The English-Speaking Union Cover: Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Stratford-upon-Avon Guest Lecturer One of the most prolific and respected producers in public broadcasting, Stephen Segaller oversees all national programming from the producing subsidiaries of WNET (New York) – THIRTEEN, WLIW21 and Creative News Group. Among these productions are: Nature, Great Performances, American Masters, Secrets of the Dead, Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, and Cyberchase. He created the PBS series Wide Angle, Expose, Need To Know, and in 2013 the weekend edition of the PBS NewsHour. He has executive-produced the PBS documentary series Ascent of Money and The War of the World, both with Niall Ferguson, Extreme Oil, and Women, War & Peace with Abigail Disney and Pamela Hogan. He has also produced a wide range of individual documentaries, including Walter Cronkite’s last two documentaries City at War: London Calling and Legacy of War. Globe Theatre, London Stephen has a lifelong passion for Shakespeare. His first public performance, at age six, was a recitation of King Henry V’s “band of brothers” speech on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt. As a college student he acted in numerous Shakespeare plays, despite attending Corpus Christi College, Cambridge —the alma mater of Christopher Marlowe. Stephen’s abiding interest in Shakespeare led him in 2008 to embrace British producer Richard Denton’s idea of creating a series of films on various plays, hosted by award-winning actors who had performed them. The result was Shakespeare Uncovered, now in its third season.
