New france

TODAY’S LEARNING GOAL:
Learning Goal: identify key characteristics of the
ECONOMY in New France
Success Criteria: I will be able to describe…
*the mercantilist system
*the triangular trading system
*New France’s resources
NEW FRANCE’S ECONOMY:
*Champlain sent glowing reports about the ECONOMY
in New France
*He said that there were gardens with all kinds of
plants and that the soil was rich
NEW FRANCE’S ECONOMY…
A Jesuit Priest, also told about other resources in New France such as
eel
and cod
With all of these resources, New France’s economy looked promising!
THE MERCANTILIST SYSTEM
*Champlain thought that the colony of New France could make
France rich
*Europeans thought of themselves as the “parents” and the
colonies as the “children”
*Therefore, France thought the child’s
job was to help the parent
MERCANTILISM:
A system in which a colony provides the parent country
with cheap raw materials
and buys manufactured
goods in return
The more colonies the parent had, the richer
It would be! Mercantilism!
TRIANGULAR TRADE:
A system in which a colony could trade only with its parent country or with other
colonies from the same country
THE FISHERY:
*New France’s economy was based mainly on FISH
and FURS
*Fish were important exports from New France
*New France was rich in cod, halibut and mackerel
*Men in fishing boats caught the fish with nets and hooks and then the fish were
gutted and filleted, dipped in brine and then dried on wooden racks
*They packed the dried fish and loaded them on ships for the voyage to France
(Mercantilism!)
DID NEW FRANCE MAKE FRANCE RICH?
*New France did not make its parent country as rich as Champlain
thought it could
*King XIV didn’t invest much $$ into this colony and the colony’s
population compared to the British colonies in New England, was
small
*in New England, the population was 466 200, but New France had
only 24 900
WHY WAS NEW FRANCE NOT AS SUCCESSFUL AS
OTHER COLONIES?
*Harsh climate in New France = shorter growing season for crops
*Harsh winters in New France
*King Louis XIV didn’t invest as much money into New France as Britain
would have invested into its colonies
*New France didn’t live up
to Champlain’s high
expectations!
