Pamela’s post……February is great month to
talk about your heart and your love of your
family and friends. As a child growing up
with 11 other siblings, we had our share of love.
My parents showed their love for each other
daily with a good-bye kiss and a welcome home
hug and kiss. They taught us to love and
respect each other and instilled in all of us a
deep faith for God. We felt we were
unconditionally loved every day (even though
some of us were in the dog house)! So, as we are
building a new team and family at Glenwood
Place, I try to instill in my staff this love and
respect of each other and of our residents too,
so thank you to all my staff and
residents for helping me build this team
and family…….. Glenwood Place!

Red Hat Club with Janet
The Glenwood Red Hat Ladies
and Gents met on January 10th in
the gathering room with 12 present. The
theme was snowmen and the tables were
decorated with them, donated by Queen
Mother Janet Mason, and Lisa Hall. We
talked about the Christmas Mitten Tree. At
the end of the meeting, there were four winners for the drawing by having a glass with a
word on it. The winners were Loretta, Louise,
Lola, and Marilyn.
Queen Mother Janet gave an interesting program about snowmen. She asked
us if we made snowmen when we were
younger and how we decorated them.
Some history about the first snowmen includes the following: The tallest snowman
was found in Wisconsin and is 22 feet tall
and 12 feet wide, and the record for the
world’s largest snowman was in 2008 in Bethel, Maine (It was called snow-woman and
stood 122 feet tall and was named in honor
of a US Senator from Maine).
Meet Our Resident:
Mae Eckhart
Another year gone by, and I’m still here. I’ve been at Glenwood for 4 1/2 years,
which is longer than I expected. Suppose Ill make it another 4 1/2 years…
I’ve enjoyed my stay here, it is a nice place with a lot of nice people.
I have gotten to be a Cubs fan while here, I enjoyed the
Diamondbacks while in Arizona so I started to like baseball. My friend-for-life,
Robin, even bought me a Cubs shirt. I had a great time watching the Cubs win
the 2016 World Series.
The new corn popper is one of my favorites—and corn is popped quite often so I find myself eating it
a lot.
I like to stay involved at Glenwood, playing all the new games—especially BINGO. I tried the Price is
Right, but I only got 2 right out of 20. Can you tell I haven't bought stuff for a while?
I seem to feel good … I’m not in pain and I’m still thinking straight...I think.
I am continuing to enjoy life.
-Mae Eckhart
Meet Our Staff:
Dennis Plaehn
Dennis was born in New York near the town of Forestville. He
still goes back there every year to see his family. His mom married
Jerry Plaehn when Dennis was five years old. Jerry was from
Gladbook, Iowa, so that is how Dennis ended up here. Dennis lived
in Le Grand, Iowa and graduated in 1985.
The reason Dennis was hired here at Glenwood was because
of his experience in many types of work, painting, drywall, welding,
brazing, landscaping, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.
Dennis is married to Danielle Plaehn. She works for Iowa River
Hospice. They have a blended family with six children and have
seven grandchildren. They live south of Marshalltown where they
built a new home together, which Dennis is very proud of.
Dennis enjoys metal detecting, privy digging for old bottles and searching old homesteads.
Dennis loves the outdoors, he has been hunting and fishing since a very young age.
As of now, Dennis’ favorite thing to do is big water fishing for Walleye and King Salmon.
Dennis has enjoyed working at Glenwood for over four years now. The residents and their families
are the best thing about his job.
Dennis is looking forward to the New Addition and hope that it is move-in-ready sometime
in
3
June. Thanks to all the Glenwood employees who help keep this place moving forward. There is a
lot of hard work that goes into keeping this big house going. Dennis looks forward to 2017.

Dare To Dream… Helen Fitz
Helen has always been an artist. When Helen was younger, she would show her art at
Fisher Community Center. She still has many of her beautiful paintings, all of which are
hanging around her room.
Willy Barker, an artist from Toledo, is an artist that uses a technique called pointillism. It is a
time-intensive and labor-intensive art form. This form of art is even more challenging for
Willy Barker because of the fact that he has Parkinson’s Disease.
While looking through the Marshalltown Times-Republican, Helen noticed an article
about Barker , saying he was the next featured artist in the Ray Frederick Gallery on MCC
campus. Helen mentioned she knew his art work and she’d love to go meet him.
When the Barker exhibit opened, Glenwood Place took Helen to the exhibit to meet Willy
Barker and view his art work. Willy Barker had actually remembered seeing Helen’s art at
Fisher Community Center when he was a little boy.
Helen had a wonderful time and enjoyed every minute she spent at the exhibit!
Dare To Dream… Betty Arterburn
My story started many years ago before I was born, when my mother’s first child only lived
21 days. He was laid to rest in a cemetery in Edina, Missouri. For some reason, there was
never a monument at his burial site.
Although this was before I was born and I never knew my brother, I have had a longing for
some time to get his grave marked. As time marched on, my parents passed away and
were buried just two places from where he is buried.
I have often wondered what it would have been like to have an older brother - how my
sister and my life would have been different. Would he have teased us or been good to us?
Would he have been handsome or not, would he have married and had children, would I
have had nieces and nephews or not, would he have been a leader in our family and
community or not, would he be a Christian, trusting in God. These are just some questions I
have asked myself. But there is one thing we know… that he is safely in the arms of Jesus,
awaiting us.
I had said something to my daughter and son-in-law about no stone at his burial place and
they stepped in and took care of that. So in November, Nancy, Gerald, my sister Doris and I
went to Edina and helped with putting a stone on our Mother’s stone as a memorial to him.
Thanks to the Lord for such a beautiful day on November 2016 and thanks to Glenwood
Place for allowing me to go and tell this story and Dare to Dream.
-Betty Arterburn
*In order for Betty’s dream to come true, Glenwood provided the funds for a
special monument to be placed at her brother’s burial site.

Virgil's dream when he turned 100 years old was to go golfing at a golf course in
Melbourne, Florida. Virgil and his daughter Sue flew to Florida in January.
Glenwood decided to help make Virgil’s dream even better by paying for a round of
golf,,, Virgil had the time of his life in Florida!
Happy 100th Birthday, Virgil!

Tax Information for Residents and Families
Did you know that the IRS allows deductions for medical care for an individual, spouse, or
dependent if the expense exceeds 7.5% of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income? The monthly fee of
an Assisted Living Community is a medical expense. The code further states that if a resident is living
in an Assisted Living Community because of a medical condition which requires them to be there, and
meals and lodging are furnished, then the cost is considered medical care expense.
If you would like a print out for 2016 tax purposes, please contact Pamela or Robin and they will send
them to you via email, US mail or you may pick them up at Glenwood Place.
Contact us 641-752-8410 or email: [email protected].
Nurse Notes…
Kathy Ham, RN
Thank you residents and families for
requesting a copy of the medication
list to take to medical appointments.
This has really cut down on the medical
office phone calls to quickly fax the
medication list to the various offices. I
have also had requests from dental offices for a quick medication list fax. Often, the dentist will need information
before safely beginning dental work.
The dentist would want to know if you
are on blood thinners, prophylaxis antibiotics and certain medications to treat
Osteoporosis. Our resident assistants
can also print the medication list from
the tablets that you see them using.
A huge reminder to continue to take
precautions during the flu season. Wash
your hands frequently. Cover your
mouth for coughs and sneezes. Throw
away used tissues after use.
Did you know that Glenwood Place offers
an automatic withdrawal option for easy
rent payment? See Pamela or Robin for
the form to get this free service started
and receive a $25 gift card.
A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Anne Schulte
from SHIIP for meeting with Glenwood residents
and families regarding their Medicare Part D renewal. It was so wonderful that Glenwood residents did not have to venture out of the community. Again, many thanks to Anne! Plus, we also
have the great pleasure of having her mother,
Gert Mohrfeld living here at Glenwood Place
too! Double bonus!
