Algebra III: Parent Functions Notes
In this course, you will learn 8 parent functions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Linear
Quadratic
Exponential
Rational
Square Root
Logarithmic
Cubic
Absolute Value
You will need to know the equations, names, graphs, domain and range for each of these
functions.
You will need to be able to graph each parent function from memory (without a
calculator). Using the domain {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2} you can locate 5 points on each graph
quickly.
The logarithmic and exponential parent functions are inverse functions. This means,
that the x-values and y-values for the points in the exponential function are reversed to
get the points for the logarithmic function. It is not necessary to evaluate the logarithmic
function to locate points on the graph. Simply reverse the points of the exponential
function to find the points for the logarithmic function.
