Hymn for America is one of 17 pieces that Stephen Paulus and Michael Dennis Browne
15
collaboratedonthroughouttheirfriendship. Browne(1940-),whocomposedthetextforthis
piece,considersthetaskofwritingformusicas"likebuildingaboatratherthanahouse—
16
something firm, buoyant, to ride on top of the music." The lyrical beauty of his poetry
evidences this approach. Paulus (1949-2014), for his part, is "less concerned with saying
17
somethingnewthanhe[is]withsayingtherightthing," inthewordsofJoshuaShank.Indeed,
Hymn for America is not particularly daring or adventurous, but is rather heartfelt and
meaningful.Letusallreflectonthesefinallines,recallingthegreatblessingthatisthisland.
