WORD SQUARE: The Spirit of God created me (Job 33: 4) OBOTS are machines designed to do work normally done by humans, and are often used in factories. Some robots look almost human, with head, arms and legs. Many are very cleverly designed, but they are very different from us. They can’t decide for themselves, or refuse to do work, and have to be controlled by humans or by computer programmes designed by humans. You are not a robot, because you can choose how to live and behave. God could have created us like robots, so that we had to love and obey Him, but He gave us the freedom to choose. The first people on earth. Adam and Eve, had that choice, and decided to disobey God. Ever since then, people have been choosing their own way, rather than God’s way, and this has spoilt the perfect world that God to created. But God loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to bring us back Himself. “God sent him to die in our place to take away our sins.” (Romans 3: 25). Jesus chose to die for us. When we choose to follow GOD’S WAY Him, God forgives all the wrong things we have MY WAY done, and sends His Spirit to live in us. Because Jesus rose from the dead, “everyone who believes in him can have eternal life.” (John 3: 15) Have you decided to put your faith in Him? Includes graphics from Clipart.com and Wikipedia. Our bodies are like amazing machines, with all the parts designed to work together Some animals have hands, but human hands are special, and can do many things that animals are unable to. This is because of the way our fingers and thumbs are designed. Apes have thumbs which help them grip things, but human hands are different because each finger can bend to meet our thumb. This means we can do things apes can never do, such as threading a needle and playing musical instruments. There are about 27 bones and joints, and 35 muscles in each of our hands. These muscles are controlled by our brain. In fact a quarter of our brain is used for our hand movements. Our special hands point to God, our Creator. THE OF LIFE The Bible tells us that God formed the first man, Adam, from the dust, then “The Lord breathed the breath of life into the man’s nose. And the man Windpipe became a living person.” (Genesis 2: 7). None of us could live without “the breath of life.” Without lungs you wouldn’t be able to breathe, and your lungs would not work without your diaphragm, which is below your lungs. It has special in air from muscles which open and close your lungs to draw . Your pipe outside your body through your nose and wind en to the lungs contain lots of blood vessels which take oxyg rest of your body (see next page). the. They are tubes, which point upwards, and act rather like a pair of binoculars. There are green domes at the top of each tube. Scientists believe these protect its eyes, and filter the small amount of sunlight shining through the water, so that the fish can easily spot jelly-fish, which are part of its food. The Barrel-eye was discovered in 1939, but scientists have only recently found that its eyes rotate inside its see-through head, just as the pilot of a plane can tilt his head to look in different directions. Many people believe that we are related to apes, but if we compare the skeleton of a chimpanzee with a human skeleton we soon see that there are lots of important differences between us. Although chimps sometimes walk upright, their arms are much longer than ours and they are more comfortable walking on all fours. Our spine, legs and feet are all designed for walking upright. The world’s tallest trees are the Giant Redwoods, which sometimes grow as tall as 117 meters (380 feet), yet water somehow reaches the highest branches. So, how does water defy the law of gravity to reach such a height? These trees, like all other plants, get the water they need by a process called capillary action. Water is made of “sticky” particles called molecules. This not only makes water hang together in drops, but also enables it to cling to other things. To see this at work, dip a paper towel into a glass of water. The water will creep up into the towel. You can try an even better experiment with some white flowers. Get some food colouring and add it to glasses of water, then stand a white carnation in each glass. This is used to chop and prepare food before cooking Saliva or eating. Did you know that your body has a food processor Epiglottis that is much cleverer than any made by humans? It’s called your digestive system. Made up of several important parts, all of them need to work together so that your food helps you live and grow. Stomach A food processor It all begins in your mouth, where your teeth chew your food into small pieces. Then a special liquid called saliva begins the work even before you Intestines swallow your food and it makes its way to your stomach. A special flap in your throat called the epiglottis closes when you swallow, to stop your food going “the wrong way.” Once in your stomach, acid juices break down your food without harming the sides of your stomach. Muscles in the wall of your stomach help digest your food by churning it around. Your food then passes through a series of tubes called intestines, where the nutrients your body needs are taken into your bloodstream. If they were uncoiled, a grown-up’s intestines would stretch to about 7 meters (23 feet) long! A normal meal is digested in about 4 hours. The waste, which is of no use to you, is taken out of your body when you use the toilet. All of this happens without your having to think about it, because it is all controlled by your brain. The only time you would notice is when you have indigestion, maybe through eating too much, or if you have a tummy upset. Your digestive system is a very important part of your body machine, designed and planned by God. SEEING INSIDE YOUR BODY © fir4ik: dreamstime.com Anatomography Adapted from WIkipedia Your heart beats around 70 times a minute — and goes on doing it all of your life, which could be 80 years or more! What an amazing pump! It’s very important for your blood to keep flowing around your body. But what happens when you cut yourself? To stop you bleeding to death, your body immediately acts to seal the cut. Special muscles squeeze the blood vessel together, and chemical messages are sent from the cut to bring cells called platelets to seal the wound. They have spikes, which make them stick together to form a clot which stops the bleeding. The clotting stops when the cut is sealed. If it didn’t , then all the blood in your body could stop flowing and you would die! So we should be grateful to God that He designed this system to work so perfectly. Csaba Deli: dreamstime.com What happens when you cut yourself? www.crt.org.uk freestockphotos.biz N 1616 a doctor called William Harvey (left) was the first person to properly understand how our heart pumps the blood around our bodies, carrying not just water and food, but also “the breath of life” as it takes oxygen from our lungs to every cell in our bodies. Yet, the importance of our blood was revealed in the Bible about 3,500 years ago: “The life of the body is in the blood.” (Leviticus 17: 11). Your blood takes a very long trip through your body. If you could stretch out all a human’s blood vessels, they would be about 60,000 miles long. That’s enough to go around the world twice! How your body digests food In 1895 German scientist Wilhelm Rontgen (right) made an amazing discovery quite by accident, while he was experimenting with electrical currents. He found that special rays — which he called X-Rays — made it possible to see through solid objects such as skin and flesh. The first ever X-Ray photo was of his wife’s hand (left). He won the Nobel Prize for his discovery. X-Rays not only reveal how wonderful our bodies really are, but are now used daily all over the world to help doctors see broken bones and find the causes of many illnesses.
