Treasure Island Art Guild – January 2014 Debbie Pridgeon January 11th Demonstrator January 2014 Show & Reception January 11th, 2014 1PM at TI City Hall Olive Farrell is our Judge for the January 2014 Show. Olive has been painting all her life. Born and raised in County Kilkenny, Ireland she now resides in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, NY. A Floral Designer for many years, Olive took up painting full time when she sold her floral business. She is a passionate and prolific painter and has exhibited in many shows in the Catskills/Hudson region. Exploring her own journey of painting is an ongoing process which she enjoys daily. “We as artist have the ability to show the beauty in the mundane.” These are the words of the great painter of light Henry Henshe. Through my spiritual journey as an artist I wish to follow his advice by sharing with others all that is beautiful in our world. Nancy McKeating, Exhibition Chairwoman Debbie began drawing and painting with oils at a young age, minored in art in college, has a teaching degree, and most recently studied with internationally known artist Augustine Ludovico. She now works predominantly on pastel portraits and watercolor paintings. She has participated in “Arts in the Park”, Regatta Point Boat Shows, monthly art shows at the Augustine Ludovico Academy of Art, and displayed her work locally and internationally. Debbie has drawn her inspiration from her travels in Italy, Norway, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. Although she has a love for portraits, her work gravitates to all that is nautical. This is unsurprising since she has lived aboard a sailboat for the past 13 years and has taught watercolor and portrait workshops in various ports. Debbie’s work hangs in important collections around the U.S. and the Western Caribbean. For several years, the Art Guild has held an Annual Workshop Show where any member or non-member who has attended at least one workshop may enter their work in the show. The artwork entered must have been worked on in one of the workshops. The artwork may be completed elsewhere, but if you have come to a workshop and “painted,” that piece of artwork qualifies for the show. The Painting Exchange for the Annual Workshop Show is February 27th and the Show & Reception is March 8th. March Madness Flea Market and White Elephant Sale Also supporting the Scholarship Fund, our ever-popular March Flea Market is being expanded to include a White Elephant Sale, as well. What is a White Elephant? A White Elephant is an object of no use or value to the current owner. However, the history of the term “White Elephant” is more interesting. The Wikipedia definition is as follows: A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable but burdensome possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth. The term derives from the story that the kings of Siam (now Thailand) were accustomed to make a present of one of these animals to courtiers who had rendered themselves obnoxious, in order to ruin the recipient by the cost of its maintenance. We don’t want any of these! March 8th Paige, future TIAG Artist recruited at Horan Park 100 Artists Show Nov. 30, 2013
