SQ4R: A Classic Method for
Studying Texts

S = Survey
Before you read the book, browse it to see what main topics the book covers, pay attention to the organizational structure of the book. Do the same
before each chapter—study pictures, charts, graphs, read the summary at the
end.
♦
Q = Question
Take the heading of the section and turn it to question. After reading the
chapter try to answer this question.
♦
R1 = Read
Be actively engaged in the text when you read to understand the material.
Use a pacer and break it up, section by section.
♦
R2 = Respond
After reading the chapter, close the book and try to answer the question
with your own words. If you can’t do this, read the section one more time
♦
R3 = Record
Highlight, circle, or underline the text. Take notes after you have read the
text.
♦
R4 = Review
Make regular review periods. Skim over the material and recall the key
points.
