Upper Iowa University SQ4R: A Classic Method for Studying Texts ♦ S = Survey Before you read the book, browse it to see what main topics the book covers, pay attention to the organizational structure of the book. Do the same before each chapter—study pictures, charts, graphs, read the summary at the end. ♦ Q = Question Take the heading of the section and turn it to question. After reading the chapter try to answer this question. ♦ R1 = Read Be actively engaged in the text when you read to understand the material. Use a pacer and break it up, section by section. ♦ R2 = Respond After reading the chapter, close the book and try to answer the question with your own words. If you can’t do this, read the section one more time ♦ R3 = Record Highlight, circle, or underline the text. Take notes after you have read the text. ♦ R4 = Review Make regular review periods. Skim over the material and recall the key points. Created by the Office of Academic Success at Upper Iowa University. May 2012.
