Student of the Term Awards
Each Term I seek nominations from my colleagues for the Student of the Term
Award, given at each Year Level to a boy or girl who is deemed to have contributed
most profitably to the life, spirit and culture of our College by committing to striving
for personal best, overcoming an obstacle, setting a fine example or performing
some act of kindness or bravery.
I am pleased to announce the Term 1 2011 recipients of the Student of the Term
Awards:
Year 7 – NICHOLAS EVANS for the manner in which he has settled into his new
school, offering a bright personality and infectious outlook on life, for being goodhearted and kind. Nicholas embodies qualities we so admire at this school –
courage, competence, compassion and a strong conscience. Nicholas was
nominated by Miss Kate Buttigieg and Miss Vicki Thompson.
Year 8 – JARRYD WORLAND was nominated to me by Mr Michael Dillon. He has
set himself apart by earning a wonderful Term 1 Report, displaying a quiet but
confident manner and simply refusing to succumb to pressure. Jarryd has set goals
for himself and is determined to do his best on every task asked of him. As a role
model for other students, Jarryd is an outstanding young man.
Year 9 – FRANCIS FANCHETTE is seen as a young fellow of great maturity,
resilience and commitment. He is deemed highly worthy of this Award for the
immaculate wearing of his College uniform, his polite and helpful nature, his
encouragement of other students, most particularly those who may struggle with
their learning, plus the consistent demonstration of exceptional leadership skills.
Above all, Francis is a pleasure to teach. He is nominated for this Award by Mrs
Jennifer Trodden.
Year 10 – JAMES SEWELL is a young man who dedicated himself throughout
Term 1 to achieving his best as he settled in at the Senior Campus. He worked in
support of his teachers and affirmed their commitment to his learning. He assists
other students, some of whom may not find their schoolwork easy. James
enthusiastically seeks to be the best he can be and, in so doing, enlivens and
energizes those around him. This young man was nominated to me by Mrs
Margaret Blythman.

Year 11 – DAMIAN KRYLOV is another young man who has earned a reputation for being a committed member
of our College community. In nominating him for this Award, Mrs Romi Bennett and Miss Amy Mazzitelli used
words such as outstanding, caring, compassionate, respectful, willing, hardworking, and persevering. Damian
sees a need and seeks to fill it. He is not one to sit and allow others to do what needs to be done. I am told he
seeks no recognition for what he does and is described as a genuinely delightful young man.
Year 12 – Try as I may, it is often not possible to narrow a field of 9 nominations down to one. In seeking a
Year 12 Student of the Term, I could not split two nominees, so I decided to present two awards.
Firstly, to a young woman who is constantly working to improve her standards and has refused to allow setbacks
and personal hardships to discourage or distract her. She is seen to be respectful, grateful and a first class role
model for others. This young woman has set her heart on achieving her best possible results in Year 12 and has
not strayed from this vision. She was nominated for this Award by Mr Adam Gordon and Mr Timothy O’Meara.
We commend MADELEINE TYRRELL.
The second Award at Year 12 goes to another young woman who is seen to make the best of any situation; who
exhibits a ‘can do’ attitude; who sees hurdles simply as further opportunities to learn and to grow. Her bubbly
personality and her desire to be her best make her an invaluable member of each class and of our school
community. No task is deemed too small or insignificant if it helps other people. She was nominated to me by
Miss Jenna Hicks and Mrs Elizabeth Bilston. We applaud NICOLE DIAZ.
St Francis Xavier Day Celebrations
Today marked a very special occasion on our calendar. The entire student and Staff body came together to
celebrate the life and legacy of our Patron Saint, Francis Xavier. Eucharist was celebrated in the new Gymnasium
at the Beaconsfield Campus before a gathering of 2,000 children and adults. Fr Peter Slater led the celebration
of Mass together with Fr Bernard Mahony. Student participation was outstanding.
Prayer in the Classroom
The day at St Francis Xavier College begins and concludes with prayer. Each Care Group Teacher
guides the students in prayer – sometimes in a structured manner, sometimes in traditional prayers
of the Church, sometimes in a quiet and reflective form. Spending time in prayer is one part of the
rich tradition of our Faith and is essential in the daily routine of a Catholic school.
Social Network Problems
On numerous occasions in recent years I have written to parents of the serious nature of misuse of social network
sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Unfortunately, the problems associated with such misuse have not gone
away. Sadly, they seem to me to be increasing. Of particular concern to me is:
• Students involved in misuse of social network sites seem to lack the understanding that their words are
recorded there for all to see.
• Students seem to believe that they are not accountable if their comments offend others.
• The sites are often open for viewing OR comment by persons any reasonable parents would deem
undesirable.
• Students are too often communicating on these sites at times they should be sleeping.
• Some are using these sites to intimidate or bully.
• Some are participating in sites that are of a very questionable or unethical nature, particularly for a teenager.
I again implore parents to take a guiding hand in overseeing student use of social network sites and to regulate
the nature and frequency of such use.
In the Coming Weeks
We are approaching a very busy time of the Semester. In the weeks ahead we have:
• Study Day at Home / Staff Professional Learning Day (Friday June 10)
• Public Holiday (Monday June 13).
• All Unit 3 students undertaking the GAT (Thursday June 16).

Annual Report to the School Community
Each year all schools across Australia are called upon to provide a detailed summary of goals and achievements
to their communities. Through an agreement between the Australian Government and the Catholic Education
Commission of Victoria, Catholic schools provide data in thirteen key areas, such as the rate of student
attendance, VCE results, NAPLAN outcomes at Year 7 & 9, post-school destinations of the graduating class and
the financial performance of the College. The St Francis Xavier College Annual Report may be viewed on the
College website, at Reception at both Campuses or via a Parish Representative on the College Board.
Emergency Medical Details
Attached to this Newsletter is a copy of the College Emergency Medical Form. If you believe your contact
details have changed since you filled in this form when your child was enrolled at the College or your child’s
medical condition has changed, please print out a copy, complete it with your current details and have your child
drop it into Student Services at either Campus.
If you believe your details have not changed – no action is necessary.
We are Praying for…
• Our colleague and teacher, Mrs Sue Nichols, as she recovers from surgery and further treatment.
• Stacey Colebrook of Year 12 as she recovers from treatment for leukemia..
• Mr Liam Davidson, former Principal of John Paul College in Frankston and currently Director of Religious
Education in the Diocese of Ballarat, as he is seriously ill at present.

TEACHING & LEARNING; FAITH & LITURGY
Mr Malcolm Joseph – Deputy Principal, Mission
Educating Mind & Heart
Recently I recalled a conversation I had with a colleague more than ten years ago. We were discussing education,
in general, but, more specifically, what could be done for disengaged students. After some time we came to the
conclusion that the real problem was that all too often teaching was aimed at reaching the student’s mind. In
other words, learning is seen merely as an intellectual exercise. We then talked about the impact of relationships,
emotions, empathy, etc., which eventually brought us to the heart of education.
A few days later, my colleague was reminded of our conversation when he came across an article which he
forwarded to me. The article was about Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, whose 1995 book,
Emotional Intelligence (a best seller in many countries) was on The New York Times bestseller list for a year-anda-half; with more than 5,000,000 copies in print worldwide in 30 languages. Emotional Intelligence or Emotional
Learning is now recognized in countries around the globe as being essential skills for living. In 2002 UNESCO
began a worldwide initiative to promote Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), in educational settings. It is now
common place to use SEL in professional and business settings as well.
Daniel Goleman identifies five main domains of emotional intelligence:
• Self-awareness: recognising our own strengths, weaknesses and emotions.
• Self-regulation: the ability to control our emotions.
• Motivation: the strength to persist in the pursuit of goals.
• Empathy: to be able to see things from another’s perspective
• Social skills: the ability to nurture relationships
Goleman believes that schools should teach emotional literacy along with regular academic subjects. Careful
research evaluations are showing that SEL not only improves children’s social and emotional abilities, but also
lowers risks such as violence, substance abuse, and unwanted teen pregnancies, while making children better
behaved and more positive about learning. Most impressively, academic achievement scores improve by an
average 12 to 15%. In other words, helping children to improve their self-awareness and confidence, manage their
disturbing emotions and impulses, and increase their empathy pays off not just in improved behaviour, but also
in measurable academic achievement.
The following stages of development or progress have been suggested:
• In early primary school students should learn to recognize and accurately label their emotions and how they
lead them to act.
• By late primary school, lessons in empathy should make children able to identify the non-verbal clues which
indicate how someone else feels.
• In junior secondary school they should be able to analyse what creates stress for them or what motivates
their best performance.
• In senior secondary school the SEL skills include listening and talking in ways that resolve conflicts instead of
escalating them and negotiating for win-win solutions
I’ll close with a word from Archbishop Desmond Tutu who claimed ‘educating the mind without educating the
heart has produced brilliant scientists who used their intelligence for evil.’

PREPARATION FOR EXAMS
After a very successful preparation and participation in the NAPLAN, it is now time to begin serious discussion
about preparation for mid-year exams. As the exam period for Year 9 is approaching fast I thought it might be
advantageous to list a few tips to assist our students in an adequate preparation.
St. Francis Xavier College, 2011 – Hold Fast to What is Good
In the coming weeks students will hear and take part in skill development sessions in preparation for these midyear exams. I encourage all students to make efforts to attend the Maths and English workshops held after school
on Mondays and Wednesdays.
STUDY TIPS – START NOW
There are a number of students who still have difficulty understanding and applying study methods to their
learning. While students should be reviewing regularly they tend to try and cram information at the last minute.
This, in most cases, is not the answer; a steady journey through the information required is a better way to go.
Students really should know how they learn best. There has been enough literature and articles written in College
Newsletter over the last two years outlining tips and websites which can assist in this area. I recommend that
students who do find it difficult to commit to study time should try some of the following:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)
(f)
(g)
(h)
(i)
(j)
(k)
go online to ‘Moodle’ and take the Learning Styles test, then use the strategies to set up a study routine
do sums from your Maths text book and check your answers; concentrate on the chapters you are not sure
about first
read through each chapter’s worked examples and then test your understanding by doing a couple of
sums without looking at the examples
go onto ‘Moodle’ download and complete the exam review work
re read your persuasive and analysis essays – take notes
browse through your notes – highlight important points, write notes in the margins to jog your memory later
– this will save you reading the whole lot again
memorise a couple of interesting points you have chosen to write about by copying them out and pasting
them around your room
read some newspaper articles and see if you can articulate the main points
practise writing to a time limit – how much can your write in 15 mins?
ask your teachers for help
attend a workshop or lunchtime class
It is very important that ALL students prepare adequately; this will place them in a better position as they continue
their learning journey at Berwick, and prepare for their transition to the Beaconsfield Campus in 2012. I wish
them all the very best for the coming weeks.
Mr K. Woodhouse: Director of Faith & Liturgy
Last week saw the conclusion of Year 11 Community Service. Our students worked for a day in the local Catholic
Primary Schools – St Michael’s, Mary MacKillop, St John’s the Baptist, St James, St Catherine’s and Don Bosco.
From all reports our students worked hard in and out of the classroom and were a great help to the local school
communities.
We have a number of students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in the local Parishes. We wish these
students every blessing for this important sacramental occasion.
Thursday June 2 is the celebration of St Francis Xavier Day. The whole school community is gathering in the new
Hall at the Beaconsfield Campus. The focus will be on St Francis Xavier’s life as an inspiration for the life of our
own community. Nine dates will be highlighted in the procession: 1506 – Francis Xavier’s birth; 1534 – the vow
to form the Society of Jesus with Francis Xavier, St Ignatius Loyola and companions; 1542 – Xavier lands in
India; 1549 – Japan; 1552 – St Francis Xavier dies within reach of China; 1978 – Beaconsfield Campus; 1987 –
new Campus in Cranbourne (which became St Peter’s in 1994); 2003 – Berwick Campus; 2012 – Officer Campus.
Our celebrant Fr Peter Slater will also bless the venture of the Officer Campus and the nine World Youth Day
pilgrims. Parents are most welcome to attend the Mass beginning at 11.00am.
St. Francis Xavier College, 2011 – Hold Fast to What is Good
FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Vera Treloar – Deputy Principal, Head of Campus
All students have been issued with a timetable for the forthcoming examination period beginning Friday June 10.
Students are expected to familiarise themselves with their timetable and ensure that they have revised effectively
and are thoroughly prepared. It is crucial that all students adopt a positive attitude towards their studies and
participate in this formal assessment period to the best of their ability. In particular, I wish all students sitting mid
year VCAA exanimations the best of luck.
College Colours
Included as part of our first Campus Assembly in the new hall, a number of students were awarded a College
Colour for their outstanding contribution to College life. Congratulations to the following students on a wonderful
effort:
BRONZE
Kalen Murrian and Jessica Wylie (McKenna)
Jessica Rose Meyer (Thomas)
SILVER
Sarah Abela (Gallagher)
Tiffany Loverso (McDonagh
Michaela Fenech and Rene Mitchell (McKenna)
Michael Gardiner and Shaye Smith ( Schneider)
GOLD
Rebecca Magdich (Burgess)
Samuel Grimshaw (Gallagher)
Eloise Bieniak and Oakleigh Mullan (McKenna)
Ashlee Cox (Schneider)
Student Drivers
As the year progresses and an increasing number of Year 12 students turn 18 and obtain their Driver’s Licence,
so too does the demand for parking space in the area surrounding the College. I encourage students to:
* Get to school early. There are only a small number of legal parking spaces along Beaconsfield Avenue and
surrounding streets. As there is no student parking permitted on Campus, parking in restricted areas near the
school will incur a significant fine from the local Council.
• Leave the car at home and continue to use public transport. This is not only a more environmentally friendly
option, but less risky for students in their first year of driving, often under pressure to carry student passengers.
Mobile Phones
In recent weeks there has been an increase in the number of phones being confiscated from students at the
Beaconsfield Campus. This is a result of students accessing phones during class as well as during recess/lunch.
To clarify the rules surrounding phones, I remind parents and students of the following:
• Phones are NOT permitted to be seen or used on Campus
• Confiscated items will be returned by the Head of Campus
• An after-school detention will be issued
• Repeat offences will incur a suspension
• iPhones cannot be used to listen to music at school
• Phones & iPods are NOT permitted inside an exam venue
• Unless they are essential, may I suggest that phones be left at home.
Public Speaking News
Mr Adam Gordon
Congratulations to Darragh Quinless (Year 12), Sophia Taylor-Riozzi (Year 11), Jenna Russo (Year 11) and
Frankie Mascadri (Year 10) for winning the Beaumont Oratory Finals.
Congratulations to Ellie Kelsch for finishing 3rd in the Regional Finals of the Plain English Speaking Competition.
Good luck to our DAV Debaters who are competing on Thursday in the DAV Schools Competition at St Margaret's.
St. Francis Xavier College, 2011 – Hold Fast to What is Good
FROM THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
Ms Joanne Rock – Deputy Principal, Head of Campus
Congratulations!
On Monday, the Year 8 students were lucky enough to participate in a Medieval Day put on by the SOSE Department
as part of SOSE week. It was a fantastic day! I want to acknowledge the efforts of the SOSE team to get such an
event organised, in particular, the efforts of Mrs Jacqui Dunstan who did the behind-the-scenes organising that
ensured the day went off so successfully. I was fortunate enough to be present for a session and was able to witness
firsthand the high level of enjoyment and engagement had by the students.
Relevant topic
As a result of the Medieval Day when all Year 8 students were asked to attend in their full PE uniform, it has come
to my attention that a number of students don’t have the full College PE uniform. In particular, many students don’t
seem to have the winter track pants or jacket. Can I please remind parents that it is an expectation that all students
have the full PE uniform and if they are requested to wear it to school in order to participate in a whole day activity,
that they will come wearing the PE uniform correctly. If your child does not have the winter garments of the PE
uniform, they need to come dressed in their normal winter uniform and participate in that.
St Francis Xavier Day Celebrations
Today, the Junior Campus students were bussed over to the Senior Campus for a day of commemoration and
celebration for our College patron, St Francis Xavier. For most of the juniors, it was the first time they had been in
the new Hall and it was a spectacular event for them to experience. The Mass was beautiful and so was the students’
behaviour. After Mass we had a fete where each House organised a stall of food or an activity. All money raised will
go to charities that the College supports on an annual basis. Before departing, we watched part of the senior school
music and drama competition. A successful day like this does not just happen. It takes many people weeks of planning
and then everyone on the day getting involved and doing their part. It was a wonderful day on so many levels, and
the behavior and participation of the junior students really made me proud.
I also want to thank the staff who worked so hard to make the day happen, especially the House Coordinators and
their teams who prepared food stalls or activities for the fete.
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The College is currently preparing to submit Semester 2 EMA Applications for 2011. We urge all parents who have
students under 16 years of age, and hold a current Concession or Health Care Card to collect an EMA Application
Form from Reception at the Berwick or Beaconsfield Campus.
Applications for Semester 2 EMA strictly close on 10th August 2011. Late applications will be assessed on a case
by case basis by the Department of Education and we can make no guarantee payments will be made to families.
Education Fee Accounts
Please be reminded that the second instalment of 2011 Education Fees has now been billed. There will be three
instalments throughout 2011, Term 1 in February, Term 2 in May and Term 3 in August.
Accounts which do not currently have a payment arrangement or direct debit in place are due and payable on or
before 31st May 2011. Payment arrangements and direct debits can be established at any time, by contacting
the Finance Department, or downloading a direct debit form from www.sfx.vic.edu.au.
Fee concessions may be granted in cases of financial hardship or where other special circumstances exist. If
you are experiencing difficulty paying your account we ask that you contact Mrs Rebecca Bradley, College
Accountant, to confidentially discuss your account.
St. Francis Xavier College, 2011 – Hold Fast to What is Good
Year 9 OUTWARD BOUND
Mr Peter Robinson – Outward Bound Co-ordinator
Preparation for the Year 9 Outward Bound Programme is well underway.
Student Medical Forms should now have been returned.
We are in the process of checking each form. Once this has been completed we will send them to Outward Bound
Australia. Staff from Outward Bound will also check each form and may contact some parents for further information.
Please note that students do not need to have a special Tetanus immunisation before Outward Bound provided
that their childhood immunisations are up to date. They are not due for their next course of immunisations
(including Tetanus) until Year 10.
We have started the process of organising the students into 19 groups for their expedition. Students were asked
to nominate 4 close friends. We will ensure that each student has one close friend in their group. Our experience
has been that students benefit from having a close friend in their group for the first few days of the expedition,
however, it does not take long for the group to begin to work as a team and to support each other as a whole
group. Many former students of the College have told me that they made friendships during Outward Bound
which are still strong even after they have left school.
Ten Outward Bound Groups will complete their expedition in the Snowy River National Park in East Gippsland
and nine Groups will complete their expedition in the Namadji National Park in the ACT.
There is an Outward Bound Moodle Page. It is worth a look. Your son or daughter can log on for you. It includes
information about Outward Bound, the clothing list and photographs from past expeditions amongst other things.
Please remember the Parent Information Night at 7.30 pm on July 21. (This night is for parents only. Students
will have an information session during the day earlier in the week.) In the meantime if you have any questions about
Outward Bound please do not hesitate to contact me at the Beaconsfield Campus on 9707 3111.
COLDS, FLU AND SCHOOL
Please consider the following:
• If you send your child to school unwell, you are welcome to call Sickbay and alert the nurse to the fact that your
child may present at Sick Bay instead of telling them to go to the nurse if they feel sick.
• Do not send a child to school with a temperature, vomiting or diahorrea.
• Wait at least 24 hrs after the last vomiting or diahorrea before sending a child back to school.
• A day or two in bed with a heavy cold should help it to pass quicker and with fewer complications.
• Should your child have a mild cold, please supply tissues, throat soothers and lots of drinks. Cold and Flu
medication may be helpful.
• In case of Asthma the student should carry Ventolin (or similar) at all times.
• If your child is sick (rather than just unwell), please keep them at home.
The expectation is that students can manage at school even when they are a little unwell. A runny nose, a scratchy
throat or a bit of a headache are not good reasons for a student to miss school. The College nurses will actively
encourage students to remain at school unless they are significantly unwell. This may contradict the student’s opinion
at times.
Finally, please do not accept text messages or phone calls from a student with requests to go home. It is contrary
to school regulations for students to use mobile phones during school and could result in the phone being confiscated
and the student receiving an after school detention. Instead, ask the student to go to Sickbay where a qualified
nurse will assess them and call home if necessary.
VCE/Yr 12 students should consider having a Flu Injection to avoid coming down with flu during important exam or
study times. Please discuss this with your doctor.
Do not hesitate to contact the College nurses about your child, as personal and individual information is very helpful.

St. Francis Xavier College, 2011 – Hold Fast to What is Good
DIRECTOR OF LEARNING & VCE
Mrs Margaret Blythman
In the next few weeks we approach the end of Semester 1. This also signals the period of crucial assessments
for students of Year 10, 11 and 12. We trust that regular home study and careful planning and goal setting have
ensured your child is well prepared for the School Assessed Coursework and Examinations.
It is timely to remind all parents and students of the importance of the mid-year examinations for all our senior
students. For those undertaking VCAA external examinations at our College, the exams contribute 33% of the
student’s final score. Successful outcomes in these exams will provide the student with great impetus and
confidence for the months ahead and add greatly to his or her potential for ultimate success.
The exams begin on Friday June 10 and conclude on Friday June 17. There will be no formal classes during this
week. It is expected that all students will use this time to study and revise for their exams.
Those students undertaking Unit 3 studies must sit the VCAA General Achievement Test (GAT) on Thursday,
June 16, 2011. Other Unit 3 examinations are Chemistry, Accounting, Psychology, Physics, Environmental
Science and Biology. On Friday June 17 the Year 12 students will sit a compulsory practice English exam. All
students under taking a Unit 3/4 study have received an examination guide booklet (VCE Navigator 2011). This
contains important information on exam rules and procedures and can also be accessed at
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/publications/vceexamnav11.pdf
Attached to this letter is a copy of the examination timetable and a set of exam procedures for all Year 10 and 11
exams. It is important for these to be thoroughly read prior to exam week. Copies of these can be found on the
Moodle VCE Learning Hub - http://moodle.sfx.vic.edu.au. During the examination week the full College uniform
must be worn including the College bag. The College ID card must also be presented to facilitate roll marking and
entry to the VCAA examinations. Students should also plan to arrive at school well before the scheduled starting
time of the exams.
Semester 2 begins for all classes on Monday, June 20, 2011.
ST FRANCIS XAVIER COLLEGE – SEMESTER 1 EXAM PROCEDURES, 2011 – YEARS 10 & 11
1. Full school uniform is required to be worn by all students attending the Campus during Exam week. Uniform
checks will be conducted before the commencement of each exam.
2. On the day of an exam, students must arrive at the Campus at least 15 mins before the scheduled
commencement time. Attendance rolls will be taken upon entering the exam venue. Students who arrive at
the Campus earlier than this must sign in at Student Reception.
3. Students on the Campus but not in an exam must attend one of the supervised study classes being held in
the McKenna Building. These classes will be held throughout the exam week. Students must either be in an
exam or in study.
4. No student is to leave the Campus and then return later in the day. Once a student has signed in, he/she must
remain on the Campus until the completion of the exam. Students may then either sign out and leave for the
rest of the day or attend the supervised study.
5. Students who do not have a scheduled exam on a particular day may remain at home to study.
6. Unit 3 exams have priority over Unit 1 exams (& Unit 1 exams over Yr 10 Exams). Students who have a clash
of exams on their timetable must negotiate a new time with Mrs Blythman (Director of Learning) before Friday
June 3 - well before Exam Week.
7. On the day of a scheduled Unit 3 exam, Year 11 students are permitted to remain at home until the start of the
exam. If this causes a student to miss a Unit 1 exam, a new time for the Unit 1 exam can be negotiated with
Mrs Blythman.
8. College ID cards must be presented at each exam to facilitate roll-marking.
9. No electronic devices (e.g. iPods, phones) are permitted in an examination venue. Students may present
these to Reception prior to an exam for safe-keeping.
10. Parents must contact Student Reception if their child is absent for any exam. A medical certificate must be
provided.

FUNDRAISING FOR CARITAS AUSTRALIA – 2011
McDonagh & Thomas Houses
Term 1, saw McDonagh and Thomas Houses joining together to raise funds for Caritas Australia. This involved
Project Compassion and the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Stall at the Senior Campus and the Junior Campus
running a stall selling drinks, chocolates and icy poles.
Caritas Australia helps people help themselves – regardless of race, religion or political beliefs. They belong to
one of the largest international aid and development networks in the world. This is a network of 162 organisations
working to build a better world in over 200 countries and territories.
Caritas Australia also provide a lot of support for Indigenous Australia programs because Indigenous communities
being the most marginalised population group within our country.
The students and staff of St Francis Xavier College have seen the importance of supporting Caritas Australia and
the aid work that it provides.
At the Beaconsfield Campus students and staff raised a record amount of $3, 439.55. The House that donated
the most money was Gallagher House, raising $835.20, followed by Burgess House with a tally of $640.25.The
leading Care Group was Mr Garland’s (Burgess) donating $405.85, which was closely followed by Ms Leach’s
(Gallagher) Care Group raising $403.30.
At the Berwick Campus students and staff also raised a record amount of $2, 399.95. The House that donated
the most money was McKenna House, raising $545.60. The leading Care Group was Mr Goundan’s (McKenna)
donating $222.20, with a record effort of Six Care Groups (Mr Collingwood, Miss Anderson, Mr Breen, Mr
Marsiglio, Mr Krinas and Mr Goundan) managing to raise over $100.
It was a brilliant effort by all staff and students involved and they are to be commended on the generosity shown
throughout the period of fundraising. Each year has seen an increase in money raised and we hope to continue
with this tradition of generosity in the coming years. Our goal next year is to raise more than the $5,800 which
was the total raised this year.

SPORT REPORT
Mr Cameron Furlong
New Facilities
I am pleased to inform families that the new College Hall is now open and in operation. The new facility includes
a double court gym, new weights room with new equipment, class rooms and offices. Students have been using
these facilities over the past few weeks in their PE classes, for SIS sport and for lunch time sport. The old Hall
has now being transformed into a lecture theatre and will be ready later this year.
Rugby
The team has now played four games this season of which they have won 2 and lost 2. In Round 4 they beat
Xavier College by 31 points. The final score was 41-10. Coach Troy Coggins has been pleased with the boys’
efforts for these first few rounds. They have played each game with great intent and passion. Good luck for the
rest of the session.

The Waverley International Netball Competition will be held in the first week of the Term 2 holidays. This year the

That’s Your Problem
Bernadette Barlow & Jenna Hicks
Year 11 Problem-Solving Competition
On Wednesday May 18, 2011 a large group of talented Maths Methods students competed in a Year 11 Problem Solving
Competition at St Margaret’s School, Berwick between 4.00pm-6.00pm.
Nine teams from various colleges in the region participated and students performed very well under intense competition.
Now in its fourth year, “That’s Your Problem” provides talented students with an opportunity for higher order thinking and
creative group problem-solving while also enabling them to meet students who are equally gifted and ambitious for success.
The evening is an initiative of the Berwick Regional Maths Methods Teachers Group which also offers an equally popular
“Trivial Maths” evening for Year 12 students in August.
The teams from St. Francis Xavier College were as follows:
Alish Quinless, Elvira Hakim
Georgia Hogan, Arthur Matthews
Alexandra Collingwood, Jack Jordan
