Who then is the faithful and wise manager. Whom the master puts in
charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper
time? It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so
when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his
possessions.

Matthew 6:1-‐ 4 Giving to the Needy
1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by
them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 "So when
you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in
the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth,
they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not
let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may
be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Treasures in Heaven
Matt 6:22,23pp -- Lk 11:34-36
19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust
destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do
not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be
also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body

Do Not Worry
Matt 6:25-33pp -- Lk 12:22-31
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the
body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not
sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add
a single hour to his life ? 28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the
lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even
Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God
clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the
fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry,
saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that
you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all
these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about
tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its
own.

everything--all she had to live on."

The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his
possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great
power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and
much grace was upon them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them.
For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the
money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to
anyone as he had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles
called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned
and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

Love of Money
3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction
of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited and
understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels
about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and
constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the
truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness
with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we
can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content
with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into
many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10

have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

The Rich Young Man
Matthew 19:16-29pp -- Mk 10:17-30; Lk 18:18-30
16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I
do to get eternal life?" 17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus
replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the
commandments." 18 "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not
murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19
honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.' " 20 "All
these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus
answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 When the
young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then
Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through
the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When
the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can
be saved?" 26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but
with God all things are possible." 27 Peter answered him, "We have left
everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" 28 Jesus said to them,
"I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his
glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging
the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or
sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred

The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the
inheritance with me." 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an
arbiter between you?" 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard
against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his
possessions." 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich
man produced a good crop. 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no
place to store my crops.' 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my
barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19
And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years.
Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." ' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This
very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have
prepared for yourself ?' 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up
things for himself but is not rich toward God."

“The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But
we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be

New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act
accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be
ruined. How would I ever get on in the world? Herein lies the real
place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church’s
prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that
we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming to
close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you?

2 Corinthians 8
The Collection for the Lord’s People
1 And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace
that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very
severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up
in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were
able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they
urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to
the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave
themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to
us. 6 So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to
bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you
excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete
earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you
also excel in this grace of giving.
8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your
love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9 For you know
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for
your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might
become rich.
10 And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter.
Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire
to do so. 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do
it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.
12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to
what one has, not according to what one does not have.
13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard
pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your
plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will
supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The
one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who
gathered little did not have too little.”

Generosity Encouraged
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you
should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And
God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times,
having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is
written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their
righteousness endures forever.”[c]
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also
supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of
your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you
can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity
will result in thanksgiving to God.
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the
Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to
God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves,
others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your
confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing
with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you
their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God
has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager
16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was
accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked
him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your
management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’
3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is
taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to
beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people
will welcome me into their houses.’
5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first,
‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 “‘Nine hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.
“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it
four hundred and fifty.’
7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’
“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.
“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had
acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in
dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell
you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it
is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with
much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest
with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly
wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not
been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you
property of your own?

away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father
Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you
received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now
he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this,
between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them

Matthew 22
Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar
15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his
words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.
“Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and
that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t
swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.
17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial
tax[a] to Caesar or not?”
18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are
you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.”
They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is
this? And whose inscription?”
21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to
God what is God’s.”
22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and
went away.

The Wisdom of the Bible
Luke 19
1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there
by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was
wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short
he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a
sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him,
“Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house
today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the
guest of a sinner.”
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and
now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated
anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because
this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to
seek and to save the lost.”

Acts 20
32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can
build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are
sanctified. 33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my
own needs and the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I
showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak,
remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more
blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
The Thoughts of Humanity
“One of the best discoveries you will ever make is to learn that God

James 1
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be
quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because
human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent
and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do
what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what
it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after
looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks
like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives
freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but
doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a
tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is
worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and
faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and
to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.

earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”
26 “From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we
may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take
the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a fourdrachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
