Dog Facts
• The smallest dog is the fourpound teacup poodle. The
tallest dog is the three-foot Irish
wolfhound.
• The most popular type of dog is
the mixed-breed, or the mutt.
• The annual cost of having a
small dog is $420. This figure
includes food, vet bills, toys
and a dog license. Having a
medium dog as a pet will cost
about $620 per year and a
large dog about $780 per year.
That’s a lot of money, but dog
owners think it’s worth it!

bumpy dollars
A brand-new dollar bill feels
bumpy, not smooth. That’s because
money is engraved, which is a
special kind of printing. Metal
plates have the money design cut
into them. The plates are coated
with ink and pressed against the
special paper, which transfers the
ink. That makes the paper feel
bumpy. As it gets passed around
the little bumps wear down. That’s
why old dollars sometimes don’t
work when you try to put them in a
machine to get a snack or change!

Take Care
Of The Earth!
There are many ways you can help the Earth spin cleaner and greener.
Here are a few things you can try to keep the air, water and land clean:
• Reuse. A great way to help the
environment is to create less
waste. Find new things to do with
items you’ve used. For starters,
use scrap paper for drawing
and egg cartons to mix paint.
When you’ve finally run out of
uses for items, be sure to recycle
whenever you can.
• Recycle. Ask your parents what
types of materials are recycled
in your town. When you recycle,
less garbage ends up in landfills.
FACT: The United States produces
half of the world’s garbage,
but has only 6% of the world’s
people!
• Conserve water. When you have
the sink turned on, use only a
pencil-thin stream of water. This
will help reduce the amount of
fresh water you use.
• Plant a tree. Trees increase the

amount of oxygen in the air and
help keep it clean.
• Save energy. Turn off the lights
when you are not in a room.
Unused energy means the fossil
fuels burned to run power plants
was wasted. During the day, try not
to use lights at all. Usually natural
sunlight is all you need!
• Unplug It. Unplugging items when
not in use is one of the best things
you can do for the planet. Many
appliances, like computers and
televisions, eat up electricity even
when they are in standby mode.
• Take Part In Earth Day Events.
Many communities will be hosting
events, such as clean up days on
and around Earth Day. Ask your
parents to help you find one in
the local paper or visit
www.earthday.net.
