Pick FIVE of the following problems to do. Due Monday.
Levels I & II: One Concept, One Time Frame
1. The Lamborghini Murcielago can accelerate from 0 m/s to 25.0 m/s (which is about 55 mi/hr) in a
time of 3.125 seconds.
a. Determine the acceleration of this car.
b. How far does the Lamborghini Murcielago travel as it speeds up from rest to 25.0m/s?
2. The plane comes in for a landing. Initially moving 85m/s, it slows to a speed of 10m/s over a
distance of 370m. What acceleration does the plane experience?
3. A car initially traveling 20.0m/s gets off of a highway and slows down at a rate of -1.25m/s2. If it
maintains this acceleration for 8.0s, how fast will it be moving at the end of this time?
4. MATH CHALLENGE: A bus initially moving 4.0m/s speeds up so that it can make it through a
yellow light. It speeds up with an acceleration of 0.75m/s2. If the bus travels 15.38m as it speeds
up, how long was it speeding up for?
5. A skateboarder speeds up from 1.0m/s to 3.0m/s in 3.25s. How far does he travel during this time?
6. A train initially moving 25.0m/s begins to slow down as it approaches the train station. It travels
350m as it slows down at a rate of 0.50m/s2. How much time does it require to do this?
Level III: Multiple Steps & More than one Time Frame
7. An Aston Martin can speed up from 0m/s to 60mi/hr (26.8m/s) in 4.6s and has a top speed of
183mi/hr (81.2m/s). A certain racetrack is 1km long. Assuming the Aston Martin speeds up to it’s
top speed and then maintains that speed for the rest of the race, how much time will it take it to
complete the race?
8. A speeder is zooming down the highway at 60m/s. A parked cop sees the speeder coming towards
him. As soon as the speeder passes the cop, the cop slams on his gas pedal, causing his car to
accelerate at 7m/s2. Assuming the speeder continues to maintain her speed, while the cop
continues to accelerate, how much time will it take for the cop to catch up to the speeder?
NEVER DOUBT THAT A SMALL GROUP OF COMMITTED INDIVIDUALS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, INDEED IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT EVER HAS. MEAD
