A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 6 Message from the President Every day at Greyston is filled with change, challenge and opportunity. So too, 2015 was a year filled with both success and opportunities not yet realized. Both of us are personally excited to be taking on new roles at Greyston. After serving as Vice Chair of the Bakery Board of Directors, Karen welcomes the opportunity to now serve as Board Chair of Greyston; and since facilitating significant growth at the Bakery, Mike has embraced the Board’s invitation to become President and CEO of the Foundation alongside his ongoing role as Bakery President. Together, we are committed to transforming Greyston Foundation to expand our impact and better serve our community. We thus embarked in 2015 on a strategic review of how we deliver needed community programs not only to our Open Hiring™ team, but also to members of the broader community. The results of that review are taking us in exciting and ambitious directions. Amidst much change, our decades-long commitment to Open Hiring™ remains unwavering. After 33 years we continue to hire our bakers without judging applicants or asking them any questions before they are hired. To ensure that the opportunity this creates for individuals who are often excluded is fully realized, we also have learned that we have to do more. Access to a job for people who want to work is critical, but it is only a first step. Just like each one of us who works, Open Hiring™ staff need services and tools so that they can succeed overall – whether that is a place to live or a place for our children to learn; an advisor to go to for help; or a garden in which we can grow fresh organic produce and share our bounty. These are supports we all need. The Open Hiring™ Model provides these reinforcements to employees and addresses the needs of the broader community through our community programs. Beyond the Bakery, the Greyston Campus is bubbling with ideas and talent, and working hard to prepare for the 2018 launch of the new Center for Open Hiring™ at Greyston. We continue to be sought after by organizations across the globe looking to understand what has enabled us to be successful for these past 33 years. As always, we are very grateful for the dedication and commitment of our bakers and staff, as well as our board and council members, friends, supporters, and partners. Whether drawing inspiration from corporate leaders like Paul Polman at Unilever or Open Hiring™ ambassadors like Greyston’s own Dion Drew, we are both humbled and energized to lead Greyston as we enter a new phase of growth and change. We are and will always be: Bakers on a Mission. Sincerely, Mike Brady, President and CEO Karen Kochevar, Board Chair Baker on a Mission One man. One story. One job can make a difference. On the heels of his acclaimed “Hiring the Unemployable” TED@Unilever presentation with CEO Mike Brady, Bakery Trainer Dion Drew collaborated with Upworthy to produce a motivational profile about his path towards success. Upworthy, a socially conscious media platform, created “The Bakery that Gave him a Second Chance.” The four minute piece has received nearly 3 million hits on social media. Dion continues to inspire us everyday. Promoting Our Model Through The Center for Open Hiring™ at Greyston Building on our 33 year commitment, we are now preparing for a new phase of expansion through the Center for Open Hiring™ at Greyston. A collaborative learning space that evaluates, improves, and defines best practices, the Center will facilitate widespread adoption of Open Hiring™ and support innovation in the delivery of community programs for employees and neighbors. In collaboration with long-standing partners, as well as new businesses and organizations from across the nation, we have architected a strategy to mainstream Open Hiring™ and to ease the transition for other business leaders committed to addressing some of the most challenging issues of our time. Empowering People to Change Their Lives Shay Anderson has worked at Greyston Bakery for two years. Before joining the Greyston community, Shay had searched for a job but could not find one because employers would not look past her record. Finally, she discovered Greyston and put her name on the waiting list. “When I started my apprenticeship it was very different from what I expected. I was used to people judging me by my past and expecting me to fail. At Greyston, I was welcomed and my training started on the very first day. It wasn’t just training on our production line. I learned how to make decisions for myself and how to solve problems through conversation instead of argument. Sometimes even using humor.” She completed her apprenticeship in the shortest amount of time possible, in addition to a great performance record. “I’m grateful for Open HiringTM, not just for myself but for the people in my community. I’m proud of my accomplishments and am now a leader instead of a follower.” Shay helps makes our brownies sold at Whole Foods Market as well as our Greyston Bakery single pack brownies. In addition, she recently began an internship in the Marketing and Sales Department to advance her skills and broaden her opportunities. “I love that Greyston sees the potential I never saw in myself. It inspires me to want to do more.” “ The Country’s Leading Social Enterprise Since 1982 3,500 job opportunities created $65 million in salaries paid 19,000 families served 1982 Greyston Bakery founded 1989 Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream created in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s Beyond 2015 Invited to White House for launch of Fair Chance Business Pledge 2015 Rated in the top 10% of B-Corps in the world 1992 Greyston Foundation founded to develop community programs for Southwest Yonkers 2004 New 21,000 square foot bakery built and opened in Yonkers 2008 Launched Workforce Development Program for hard-to-employ individuals 2015 Greyston Outcomes BAKERY Employment Production and Finance 195 employment opportunities created through Open Hiring $15.8 million in sales (an increase of 18% from last year) 2,000 hours of training provided 6 million pounds of TM 122,000 hours worked by Open Hiring™ employees Operations brownies produced Certified B Launched new Snickerdoodle Blondie Received Best for the World and Best for Community Awards through B Lab $6.89 million in Salaries and Taxes Paid Corp since 2008 Maintained Level 3 Safe Quality Food Certification - the highest level of safety standard 2015 Greyston Outcomes COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Over 5,400 individuals served in the community through: Workforce Development Community Gardens Early Learning Center 140 individuals trained 491 garden plots maintained 166 children provided with early 107 individuals placed 28,000 pounds of produce grown in employment Environmental Sustainability Reduced Greenhouse Gas Intensity at Greyston Bakery by 31.1% since 2012 Increased amount of total waste sent for recycling at Greyston Bakery 65-70% Hosted 8 healthy eating initiatives 3,094 children served Housing Provided affordable housing to 222 individuals $3.3 million in savings to government 43 HIV+ individuals housed at Issan House learning and after school services 78% of children enrolled fully met Creative Curriculum milestones Financials Greyston Not-forprofits Greyston Bakery Greyston Consolidated REVENUES Greyston Consolidated 15,808,286 Bakery Sales Government Grants 1,629,044 Private Donations 1,144,495 Service Fees 950,125 Rental and Other Income 778,392 20,310,342 EXPENSES 78% 8% 6% 5% 3% Bakery Human Services Child Care Housing Workforce Development Community Gardens Administrative & Fundraising 15,291,857 1,374,025 1,431,114 811,662 473,747 123,425 1,117,174 20,623,004 74% 7% 7% 4% 2% 1% 5% “I am so happy to be making great changes in my life.
