Flooring for Senior Living DANISH MODERN, COLOR:SIMPLICITY – LUMINISM COLLECTION Healthier, Safer Floorcoverings for Senior Living Whether you’re repositioning, renovating, or designing an entirely new environment for senior living, the floor coverings you choose will impact the comfort, health, and safety of residents, patients, and staff as well as employee productivity, operational efficiencies, and costs. For more than 50 years, J+J Flooring Group has worked closely with building and design professionals throughout North America to create the best floor coverings for senior living and healthcare. The result: soft-surface solutions that deliver the highest levels of styling, value, quality, sustainability, durability, and ease of installation and maintenance. Combined with the practiced approach of evidence-based design, our products provide a solid foundation for enhanced living and healing environments ranging from independent and assisted living to skilled nursing, Alzheimer’s, and memory care facilities. The United States had 40.3 million people 65 or older in 2010. By 2050, the 65+ population is expected to more than double1. FACT: Human-Centered, Performance-Driven At J+J Flooring Group, we’re big believers in the principles of evidence-based design. We offer a myriad of carpet and textile composite flooring solutions to help you achieve healthier, safer environments along the continuum of care. We’ve got a wealth of data to support your choices. And, we’ve created a healthcare and flooring course for CEU credits specifically to help you understand the impacts of flooring in health-related settings. These are some of the most important ways that our Invision and Kinetex products can help you apply evidence-based design principles to senior living environments. Color Aging eyes respond differently than younger eyes to color and pattern and finding the correct level of contrast in textiles for senior living environments is important. While contrasting colors can differentiate floors from walls, flooring styles with very strong contrast can read as a change in depth or appear to move, affecting step mobility for those with restricted vision. J+J Flooring Group offers broadloom and modular carpet in a wide spectrum of colors and patterns that aid seniors in navigation and wayfinding and help them feel at home. Acoustics Carpet and textile composite flooring absorb both structure borne and airborne noise far more efficiently than smooth surfaces2. While all of J+J Flooring Group’s products can help you create a quieter, less distracting environment, Kinetex products deliver exceptional acoustic performance with one of the highest Noise Reduction Coefficients (NRC) and Impact Insulation Classifications (IIC) ratings of any commercial flooring product. With Kinetex underfoot, people can converse without straining their voices and more easily understand what others are saying. ACOUSTIC PROPERTIES OF FLOORING Absorption Coefficient In healthcare, a growing body of data links floor covering to positive patient and staff outcomes such as reduced healthcare-associated infections, fewer slip/falls and injuries, improved patient satisfaction, and improved staff satisfaction. Typical Frequency Range for Normal Human Hearing Frequency (Hz) 18 percent of American adults 45-64 years old, 30 percent of adults 65-74 years old, and 47 percent of adults 75 years old or older have a hearing loss3. FACT: 2 Comfort Plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) is the most common lower extremity injury suffered by bedside care providers5. Regardless of gender, weight, shoes, and walking speed, more heel pressure is caused by resilient vinyl flooring than by non-cushioned carpet tile. FACT: FLOORING SLIP FALL INJURY R ATES % of Injuries Requiring Medical Treatment More comfortable to walk, stand, and sit on than vinyl or rubber flooring, carpet has been shown to reduce leg fatigue and posture discomfort4. Our Invision carpet products offer increased comfort, performance, and durability while the high-density backing and soft textile surface of our Kinetex products offer exceptional anti-fatigue properties and minimal rolling resistance. 50 46% 40 30 20 17% 10 0 CARPET HARD SURFACE Flooring Type Slips, Falls and Injuries FOOT PRESSURE MAPPING 6 Max Heel Pressure HARD SURFACE Max Heel Pressure CARPET A 2003 study found that 17 percent of people who fell on carpet suffered injuries requiring medical attention, compared to 46 percent of those who slipped and fell on hard, shiny surfaces10. When people fall, our Invision and Kinetex flooring solutions provide a softer landing than vinyl or rubber, reducing the risk of injury. Kinetex performs exceptionally well. Its unique construction creates one of the most slip-resistant flooring surfaces ever tested, wet or dry. FACT: The cost of treating fall-related injuries is projected to grow from an estimated US$19 billion in 200011 to US$32.4 billion in 202012. Infection Control Indoor Air Quality Clinical evidence of flooring as a source of infection in healthcare settings simply does not exist7. In fact, studies show that soft-surface products such as Invision and Kinetex are less likely to transmit infection than vinyl or other hard surfaces and that smoother surfaces are more difficult to sanitize8. Because carpet fibers trap contaminants, all of our products do a much better job than vinyl or rubber at keeping particulates that trigger allergies and cause infection out of the air. Additionally, our Kinetex products easily surpass California’s 01350 requirements – the most popular U.S. standard for evaluating and restricting VOC emissions indoors. Kinetex flooring solutions also sequester airborne allergens and irritants and they are easily sanitized, contributing to improved indoor air quality. FACT: An estimated 1.7 million Americans acquire 9 healthcare-associated infections each year . FACT: Clean carpet does not support the growth of mold, even at elevated humidity levels13. 3 INSET– VALENCIA, COLOR: TERRACOTTA – ARTISAN COLLECTION; BORDER– TUSSAH, COLOR: PALM ROMANESQUE, COLOR: ABUNDANCE Flexible Offerings, Total Solutions J+J Flooring Group makes it easier for you to select the right products for different projects. You’ll find many coordinating colors and patterns throughout the Invision product line, including coordinating broadloom and modular styles. Rather, we believe in a multi-attribute approach. If there’s an opportunity to better utilize materials, introduce recycled content into our production processes, and reduce what’s sent to the landfill, we’ll figure out how to do it. With sustainability at the forefront of our processes, we provide independent, third-party verifications of our products’ environmental attributes: Invision has earned highly rated Certified Environmental Profiles for 22 modular styles featuring our eKo modular backing system. n All Invision carpets are manufactured at an ISO 14001 certified facility, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our enviromental impact on air, water, and land. n Third-party certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are available for all of our Kinetex, eKo, Nexus, PremierBac Plus, and TitanBac Plus products. n Many of our modular and broadloom products are compatible with the LEED for Healthcare ratings system. n Our Flooring Reclamation Program facilitates the reclamation of our customers’ used carpet and guarantees that the old products won’t go to a landfill. n All Kinetex products are NSF/ANSI 140 Platinum Certified. n Four of our advanced performance backing systems are NSF/ANSI 140 Certified, including eKo (Platinum), Nexus (Gold), PremierBac Plus (Gold), and TitanBac Plus (Gold). n All Invision carpets, adhesives, and seam sealers, including all GSA-approved products, comply with the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus Testing Program for Indoor Air Quality. n 16 Lifetime Performance Warranties J+J Flooring Group stands behind every aspect of our carpet with our Total Performance System®.
