detailed itinerary
Note: Our partners who operate this trip reserve the right to change the schedule. When low or high water
bars the boat from passing through a certain area, some parts can be negotiated via bus (free of charge).
In extreme circumstances the operating company reserves the right to cancel a trip at short notice due to
water levels repair works on locks or bridges or in the case of an undetected engine or power breakdown
of the boat.
DAY 1Arrive Passau (Germany)
Boarding will begin at 4:00pm and the boat will depart at approximately 6:30pm for the
first cruise.. Located at the junction of three rivers, the Danube, Inn and Ilz, Passau has a
number of interesting sites including the Fortress “Veste Oberhaus” built in 1219 where
there is an observation tower for a good view of the town and the river and St. Stevens
Cathedral with the world’s largest church organ. Cruise during the night through the
Danube Valley to Mauthausen arriving early morning.
meals: D
DAY 2Cycle to Grein via Mitterkirchen and Mauthausen (35km / 22mi)
This morning you will receive your bicycles from in front of the boat. Generally we
provide bikes with 21 gears, or 7 speed on request. Today’s bike tour takes you directly
along the banks of the Danube, where you will have enough time to enjoy the landscape
as you cycle. You can visit the medieval village and former concentration camp at
Mauthausen before setting off by bike. Further along, the Celtic village of Metterkirchen
will give you an insight into the past. There is an alternate route, which takes you via
Clam Castle and through the beautiful back country of the Strudengau. This option is
slightly hilly but has fantastic scenery. Grein is the destination for today, and is home
to Austria’s oldest city theatre and a mighty castle. The boat will cruise overnight, and
arrive in Devin the following morning with its impressive castle ruins atop the hill.
meals: B,L,D
DAY 3Cycle from Devin to Bratislava with optional city tour (18-43km / 11-26.5mi)
From Devin you will follow the former ‘Iron Curtain’, crossing the former border and
reach the imposing Baroque Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. You will
cycle through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to the coronation city of Bratislava, located at
the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. Here you have the change to explore the hidden
alleyways and sights of Bratislava on an optional city tour. During the night we cruise
to Vienna.

DAY 4At leisure in Vienna
Today you will arrive in Vienna and you will then be free to explore the beautiful city
awaiting you outside the boat. We will provide you with information to plan your
sightseeing. You can discover this city of vitality during a sight-seeing tour by bus or
use the metro system to plan your visit. The most famous places of interest like Prater,
St. Stephens Cathedral and the Hofburg are worth visiting. The gorgeous boulevard
“Ringstraße” with Burgtheater, State Opera House and town hall reminds one of the
past. There is enough time in the afternoon to stroll or visit one of the famous Viennese
coffee bars. Evening options include a Waltz and Opera Concert at a traditional Viennese
Palace or a glass of wine at a Viennese wine tavern or at the Imperial Palace. During the
night we cruise to Krems.
meals: B,L,D
DAY 5Cycle through the Wachau Valley wine area from Krems to Melk (37km / 23mi)
Today, the prettiest section of the trip, you pedal through the renowned Wachau, with
its truly romantic scenery of vineyards and quaint villages, en route to Melk. Today’s
cycle from Krems will take you past small dreamy villages, apricot trees, vineyards,
castles, monasteries and ruins. A powerful ruin looms above the small Baroque town of
Durnstein. In Weißenkirchen you will find comfy wine taverns right along the bike path
where there is the possibility for wine tasting. The boat stays overnight in Melk.
meals: B,L,D
DAY 6Visit Melk then cycle to Grein (50km / 31mi)
After breakfast you have plenty of time to visit the gorgeous baroque monastery of the
Benedictine Brethren of Melk. Today’s stage is marked by diversity. Starting in the wide
valleys of the Nibelungenau you follow the Danube and cycle further into the Strudengau
– a narrow point of the Danube which used to be notorious amongst skippers. Your
destination for today is the city of Grein, home of Austria’s oldest city theatre (optional
excursion). During the night we cruise to Obermuhl arriving early morning.
meals: B,L,D
DAY 7Cycle via the Danube Loop to Engelhartszell (28-43km / 17.5-26.5mi)
Your last cycle from Obermuhl will lead you through the Danube valley and past its many
pretty villages. Along the way you might be tempted to stop by a small pub and sample
the freshly grilled mackerel. For breathtaking views of the Danube you can follow the
walking trail to the viewpoint high above the Danube Loop. Today’s cycle destination is
the traditional town of Engelhartszell, with Austria’s only Trappist monastery where you
can taste their delicious liquors and cheese. Our last evening on board will include a
gala dinner and crew show, while we cruise overnight back to Passau.
meals: B,L,D
DAY 8Morning cruise through the Danube valley, disembark Passau, trip concludes
Check-out from the cabins is by 9:00am. During breakfast our boat continues to Passau
with estimated arrival time 9:30am and disembarkation at approximately 10:00-10:30am.

trip grading - introductory to moderate
This trip involves 5 days cycling usually along paved cycle paths across generally flat terrain up to 50km
/ 31mi in a day. It is almost exclusively on the Danube cycle path. In and out of the cities there will be
some traffic. You need only carry your camera/rain gear and water bottle. Your luggage remains on the
ship. For this reason the trip is a Grade 2 cycle and is considered suitable for beginners and children. A
limited number of children’s bikes and electric bikes are available, as are bike seats and trailers (2 children,
maximum 60kg / 132lb). *For safety reasons, we insist that cycle helmets be included as a compulsory
item on your equipment list.
the boats
The MV Theodor Korner (premium category A boat) is a 135 passenger spacious nostalgic ship with
a lounge, restaurant area, panorama bar and salon, spacious sun deck with lounge chairs, sauna and
roofed terrace. The comfortable 61 cabins (approx. 8‑16 m²) feature a large picture window, ensuite, TV,
hair‑dryer, mini‑safe and air‑conditioning. You have a choice of 3 deck levels which have the cabins – Main

range of cabins and deck levels are available from your UTracks travel consultant. The price available on
our website is based in a 2‑bed cabin on the Main Deck. Note: We do not match clients together so if you
are travelling solo you will need to book a single cabin and a supplement applies. Cabins are configured
with either bunk beds (2 bed ECO cabin, approx 8‑9 m²), two lower beds (2 bed cabin, approx 10‑11 m²),
one lower bed (2 bed ECO cabin single occupancy, approx 8‑9 m²), queen size bed (Junior Suite, approx
13‑16 m²), or, triple occupancy (2 bed cabin on Promenade deck + one upper bed, or Junior Suite queen
bed + sofa bed). Trips on this boat depart Passau on a Saturday.

17m, crew approx 40, draft 1.7m, speed 20km/h.
THE BARGE EXPERIENCE
During your week long barge and bike experience you will be travelling with a group of cyclists of different
ages, nationalities and physical condition. All have a common wish to experience a relaxed and somewhat
active holiday, so the cycling speed will always be ‘easy going’.
© World Expeditions Travel Group - Erin Williams 1/17/2017 10:45:09 AM
Page 5
the danube by bike & boat
The barges are not only a means of transportation; you also sleep, eat and relax aboard. The ships are
equipped with a dining area, sometimes with a separate bar, a modern galley and a spacious sundeck.
From the recreation room there is an excellent view of the surrounding scenery. Depending on the
waterways the ships sail between 8 and 15 km per hour.
The crew consists of a captain and a cook, both professionals, who are sometimes assisted by an extra
hand. The captain is responsible for the safe transportation of the passengers and their luggage. The chef
takes care of your meals.
The barge travels with you from port to port and will transport your luggage. The barges range in standard
from D to A+ with A+ being the highest level of comfort and facilities. These ratings are based on the
barges in the fleet servicing France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Germany and Romania. We ask that you
carefully consider the standard of accommodation you are comfortable with as the range is quite diverse.
The following is an indication of what the ratings mean. Please note that none of the barges could be
called luxurious.
D‑ standard barges with shared bathroom facilities. 2 bed bunkbed cabins but also may have multishare
cabins.
C ‑ standard barges usually bunk beds in cabins generally with private facilities but often without air
conditioning. Cabin sizes are compact with little space to move around comfortably within the cabin.
B ‑ standard plus barge ‑ combination of lower twin beds and bunk beds in the cabins with private facilities
which are generally more spacious (although never as spacious as a hotel room).
A and A+ are comfort barges ‑ offer more space per person, some have air‑conditioning and the beds are
lower berths.
All barges are equipped with double cabins with private facilities (except D category or unless otherwise
noted). Cabins on comfort barges are equipped with two level beds instead of bunk beds. The crew on
the barge will ensure that your stay aboard is as pleasant as possible.
The trip will be accompanied by an enthusiastic and multilingual tour leader. He/she guides you along
the fixed cycle itineraries, or remains on board providing daily briefings (Danube trips), answers your
questions, assists with problems and may invite you to accompany him/her on some interesting city walks.
The details of the barge you will be travelling on follows. Note ‑ there is often more than one barge used
on different departures of this trip and in that case more than one barge description follows. Barges are
also subject to change without notice. Please speak to your travel agent or UTracks consultant who will
provide the name of the barge you will be on. This information is also on your tour voucher.
equipment provided
BIKES
Bicycles provided are 21 speed touring bikes with bike rack, pannier, repair kit (per cabin) and handbrake.
If you would like a 7 speed bike (also with backpedal brake) you need to book this in advance. You should
specify which bike is required at the time of booking. Children’s bikes, children trailer (1 – 2 children – max.
60kg / 132lb) and child seat are subject to availability. Reservation is necessary in advance. Safety vests
are compulsory in Slovakia in poor weather or at night, as are helmets for adults (out of city) and children
15 and under (everywhere).

between models, and will be free‑wheel or with a backpedal brake (on request). In ‘normal’ mode the

dietary requirements
Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and
can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss
your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we
can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely
to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may
be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to
guarantee a peanut‑free or allergen‑free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with
life‑threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility
of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of
self‑administering these medications.
a note on our self guided adventures
Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a
keen eye. On self guided cycling tours it is expected that you will know how to repair punctures and make
minor adjustments to gears, handlebars and seats. For anything more serious, our local partner will be
able to assist. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that
you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!) Sometimes route finding,
losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never
been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of it as the vast majority of
our first time travellers attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding
is updated regularly and we provide a 7day service hotline in the event of any problems. Using directions
and maps can be more difficult for solo travellers as often two heads are better than one when it comes to
finding your way. There is a certain level of the unknown that comes with self guided trips, however with
a methodical approach potential problems will be averted. The freedom of a self guided trip is something
that, once experienced, is sought time and time again.
joining instructions
On confirmation of your booking you will receive a pre‑departure kit. Three weeks prior to your departure
from your home country you will receive your final travel vouchers with details on how to join the trip and
your cabin number. On embarkation or at the first group meeting you will receive your information pack.
about your group
You will be joining a group with a mix of participants from different countries, speaking different languages
including English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. This is not an English only speaking tour. The
cycling sections are not guided. You will be provided with the necessary route information to complete
stages of the cycle and the cruise director will provide daily briefings – usually in German and English. The
length and format of these briefings will be tailored to the makeup of the group.
GROUP SIZE: Min 50 (must be reached 4 weeks prior to departure, Max 135 (MTK). These tours are
extremely popular.
GUIDED CYCLE PACKAGE: Min 10, Max 22 participants. In 2017 a Guided cycle package is available
