OUR SUPER HEROES
ARE MAKING AN
IMPACT
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
UNITED WAY OF MEDINA COUNTY’S MISSION:
We will build a stronger Medina County by mobilizing our communities to improve people’s lives.
To do this we will:
• Energize and inspire people to make a difference
• Craft human care agendas within and across our communities
• Build coalitions around these agendas
• Increase investments in these agendas by expanding and diversifying our own development efforts and supporting those of others
• Ensure that these investments have measurable, recognizable impact
• Reflect the diversity of the communities we serve
TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT!
A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This past year has been extremely exciting for United Way of Medina County. We have fully implemented the Community
Impact Agenda, focusing on:
• Early Childhood Development - Preparing children for school and providing opportunities to strengthen their literacy experiences
• Youth Engagement - Creating an environment that provides support, enrichment and engagement for young adults to assure positive youth development
• Income Stability - Creating long-term solutions for underemployed and unemployed households.
Through the support, input and involvement of community leaders we are using best practices, research and data to
create lasting change in our County.
We are pleased to share with you the work and successes occurring within each impact area. We thank you for your
continued support allowing us to mobilize our community, create lasting change, and make a positive impact on the lives
of many. You are United Way of Medina County’s Super Heroes.
Together we are Making An Impact!

OUR SUPER HEROES ARE MAKING AN IMPACT!
Community Impact was at the core of strategic thinking and planning over the course of the past four
years. With thoughtful input from community leaders, volunteers, and stakeholders, United Way of
Medina County moved to the Community Impact Agenda. This research and data driven transition
focuses on three key areas: Early Childhood Development, Youth Engagement and Income Stability.
Community Impact, a comprehensive approach to developing solutions for change, sets strategic
goals, invests in resources and develops projects aimed at addressing the most critical needs of our
County’s residents and creates systems for lasting change.
We are proud to share the work that is occurring within each of the Community Impact Areas.
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
PREPARING CHILDREN FOR SCHOOL AND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN THEIR LITERACY EXPERIENCES.
The Following programs and services address the needs of our County’s children with the support of United Way.
Over 600 elementary aged children are receiving Weekender Bags during the school year assuring that they and their
families will have food for the weekends and more than 200 during the summer months. Children often have access
to food during the school week through various in-school programs; on weekends children and their families are often
faced with a food deficit. Food insecurity is a prevalent risk to the growth, health, cognitive and behavioral potential
of children.
Positive adult role-models inspire children and youth strengthening their social skills and boosting their self-confidence. After-school programs
provide tutorial assistance, activities, and games along with a safe environment for children throughout Medina County.
Peer-to-peer mentoring programs provide mentors and mentees with endless benefits ranging from friendship, role-models, leadership skills,
connectedness, positive social and behavioral attitudes, and increased self-esteem. Close to 250 elementary and middle aged students are
paired with high school students in school districts throughout Medina County.
Early literacy skill development and awareness programs are being provided to families in our County assuring that children will be prepared
for school and have increased opportunities for success. Research demonstrates that a child’s ability to read and write begins to develop long
before entering school. Infancy through age eight is a critical time in a child’s early literacy development as they develop skills necessary to be
successful in school and later in life.
Proud Program Partners: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Feeding Medina County, Medina County District Library, Child Guidance & Family Solutions,
Summer Reinforcement Program, the Salvation Army Corps of Medina and Wadsworth, the Medina Community Police Activity League.
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT
CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT PROVIDES SUPPORT, ENRICHMENT AND ENGAGEMENT FOR YOUNG ADULTS TO ASSURE POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT.
reported feeling sad or hopeless; 20%
reported that they seriously contemplated
attempting suicide; and 32% reported being
bullied. Mental health professionals are
providing one-on-one counseling and group
sessions to students at the middle and
high school levels. Currently 119 students
are being served by these mental health
professionals.
Along with our program partners United Way
of Medina County is addressing the mental
and behavioral health needs of our County’s
youth, providing mentoring opportunities, and
developing opportunities for involvement.
United Way of Medina County’s support is
providing mental health professionals to work
with four of our County’s school districts. A
study commissioned by Living Well Medina
County indicated 30% of our County’s youth
Studies show that good mentoring provides
positive academic outcomes, prevents risky
behaviors, and enhances social and mental
development. At the inaugural E4 Youth
Summit in February 2014, students indicated
a need and desire for increased peer-to-peer
and business mentoring opportunities
Safety awareness programming is being
made available to students throughout the
County. The Tina Project is a program for
middle and high school students that provides
an interactive 45 minute age-appropriate
educational presentation that focuses on
healthy relationships to students in grades
6-12. The goal of the project is to prevent
dating violence and reduce the number of
teens that could become domestic violence
victims.
The Step Strong program is presented in
middle and high school health classes,
teaching students how to make healthy
choices in relation to friendships, dating,
sexual activities, and substance abuse. The
presentations are interactive and engage
students in the learning process.
United Way of Medina County’s signature
program E4 Youth Venture is providing
civic engagement opportunities to youth
throughout Medina County. A generous
$20,000 grant (over a two-year time period)
from SimplexGrinnell helped to launch the
program. Today, over 120 students are
working on “ventures” and learning the
importance of civic responsibility. Research
studies show that youth who are actively
engaged build self-confidence, learn the
importance of teamwork, become problemsolvers, realize they can influence decisions
and lead change in their communities.
Students shared at last year’s E4 Youth
Summit that they wanted the opportunity to
bring the community together and celebrate
Medina County’s youth. The outcome of this
is “Unity In the Community,” a day-long event
celebrating and engaging our County’s youth.
Mark your calendars for Friday, June 12.

INCOME STABILITY
PROVIDING THE NETWORKS AND SUPPORT NECESSARY TO HELP FAMILIES ACHIEVE FINANCIAL STABILITY – CREATING LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS FOR
UNDEREMPLOYED AND UNEMPLOYED HOUSEHOLDS THROUGH EMPLOYING MEDINA COUNTY (EMC).
The effects of unemployment and
underemployment are far reaching for an
individual, a family, and a community. In
Medina County, almost 11,000 households
are making less than $25,000 a year. There
are approximately 7,000 residents who are
unemployed.
necessary services are secured to eliminate
barriers to employment.
Lead Support Agencies provide services
to stabilize the household and eliminate
barriers to employment. Services can include
addressing basic needs, transportation,
housing, childcare, and financial literacy.
United Way of Medina County is working to
help struggling families reach a level of selfsufficiency and break the cycle of poverty.
EMC was designed through a collaborative
process with local business owners, nonprofit
partners and local government programs.
It is a comprehensive model that focuses
on promoting household stability through
sustainable employment.
Workforce and skill development are crucial
to securing self-sustaining employment.
EMC program participants receive necessary
skill development to secure and retain a job.
Through a partnership with Ohio Means Jobs
Medina County, EMC participants will receive
necessary skill development to secure and
retain a job.
Participants of EMC move through a process to
gain self-sufficiency. Beginning with Service
Coordination Sites, participants are screened,
short and long-term goals are developed, and
Through job placement, EMC works to connect
businesses and individuals to fill jobs and
provide financial stability for those who are
unemployed and underemployed in our County.

E4 YOUTH VENTURE
The United Way E4 Youth Venture program offers youth the opportunity to combine their skills and
passions to address a challenge in their community through an entirely youth-led, youth-created social
venture. Youth are supported through Dream It, Do It workshops, mentorship and seed funding to help
them launch their ideas from dream to reality.
Since receiving a SimplexGrinnell grant in July 2014, over 120 students ages 12-17 have been introduced to
the E4 Youth Venture program and are in various stages of creating their ventures.
Here’s our work in progress:
Brunswick High School launched the first official Youth Venture Team with Professionals of Tomorrow, a
business mentoring venture.
Wadsworth High School is working on “Team SuPEERior”, a student mentoring program for incoming freshmen.
Buckeye Summit, a group at Buckeye High School has several ventures in process, two of which are: Creative Clubhouse, an after-school program
designed to introduce alternative arts; and Planning for the Future, a college prep and beyond program.
This year’s Junior Leadership of Medina County class is working through E4
Youth Venture, creating social ventures as their class project. Some of their
ventures include a mentoring program for 8th graders, a community event
offering students college and career information, and addressing mental
health issues from the student’s perspective.
Finally, a new after-school club with Medina’s middle schools, Club Youth
Venture, began in March 2015 and meets bi-weekly. This is our youngest
group and demonstrates the wide range of ages the program can impact.
UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY
Attendees from the E4 Youth Summit shared their desire to bring
the community together using events, competitions and activities.
United Way is supporting their vision with Unity in the Community.
On June 12, students will have the opportunity to engage in many
different activities: service projects, volleyball and dodgeball
tournaments, art project, dunk tank, inflatables, relay races, photo
booth and Duel of the Schools, a friendly battle of the bands. E4
Youth Venture teams will make panel presentations sharing their
proposed ventures. Exhibitors will engage our target population
while showcasing their organizations. Motivational speaker
Christopher Milo will inspire the students with his message of
empowerment and hope.

DAYS OF ACTION - MAKING AN IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY!
STUFF THE BUS
Childhood poverty adversely affects student achievement. In Medina County nearly
13 percent of our children are at-risk of not being fully prepared for school. United
Way of Medina County holds the largest back-to-school drive in Medina County to
address this need. Last year’s Stuff the Bus campaign netted over 40,000 school
supplies serving 1,500 students. Thanks to the generosity of our 64 corporate
partners, five rally sites and individuals who generously donated school supply
items, students were prepared for school, ensuring a successful start to the school
year. Walmart hosted our Day of Action, over 70 volunteers joined us to count, sort
and distribute school supplies to our rally sites.
Mark your Calendar for this year’s Stuff The Bus drive – July 2015 collection and rally.
DAYS OF ACTION - MAKING AN IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY!
ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY
United Way of Medina County and the Medina County District Library partnered together for the One Book One Community
project. The library system initiated One Book One Community to raise awareness of the importance of reading and to
encourage County residents to read. The book Wonder was chosen, an endearing and meaningful book about Auggie, a
child with a severe facial deformity. The struggles and hurdles that Auggie faced on a daily basis, and his many triumphs,
encouraged readers to discuss topics like bullying, self-image, and friendship.
United Way of Medina County set a goal and collected 2,500 copies of the book Wonder for every sixth grader in the County
– spreading the message of kindness, acceptance and friendship. Thanks to the generosity of 25 local businesses, clubs
organizations and many individuals the goal was met!
