They are mainly sugars (simple carbohydrates) and starches (complex carbohydrates) that the body breaks down into glucose. Glucose provides ‘fuel for the body’ The body can only store a limited amount of carbohydrate known as glycogen in the liver and muscles so glucose replenishes these glycogen stores to provide essential energy Carbohydrates also stimulate the release of insulin which pushes the amino acids into the muscle cells to begin the process of repair. Carbohydrates can have a high, medium or low glycemic index. This index indicates how quickly the carbohydrate will enter the bloodstream. High GI sources are quickly absorbed into the body so the energy is quickly released, whereas Low GI sources are absorbed more slowly so the energy release is more gradual Carbohydrate requirements - Research suggests that between 4-5g/kg of body weight represents your daily carbohydrate need. FAT Fat is a vital macronutrient in the diet that provides energy, insulation and helps protect organs. Consumption of unhealthy fats should be kept to a minimum but a certain amount of fat is essential in the daily diet. Fats and oils are classified as saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats according to their chemical structure. The majority of saturated fats should be limited. However coconut oil as a saturated fat, for example contains a rich source of medium chain tryglcerides (MCTs) which are metabolised quicker than other fats to improve energy and stamina levels.
