Departing TRUSTEE
Paulajeanne Cavanaugh
Paulajeanne joined the Museum’s Board of Trustees in 2003 after initially being enlisted as a volunteer to help
organize the Museum’s first Antiques Appraisal Day. She went on to become a perennial force behind planning
six annual golf tournaments, as well as exhibition openings and fundraising events for the 2006 Capital
Campaign. Seeing the Museum as an integral part of the community, she has always been a strong ambassador for
the Museum and keen on promoting activities for families and children. From this passion was born the
Museum’s Holiday Tea, an event she first orchestrated in 2004 and which has become an annual favorite among
the Museum’s offerings. The Board is grateful for Paulajeanne’s enthusiasm and welcomes her continued
involvement as a volunteer now that her two terms on the Board have concluded.
Candidates Nominated AS Officers, 2009 - 2010
Stephen P. Spofford, President
Steve is a native of Kennebunk, having grown up on Summer Street. His first involvement with the Museum was
through his mother in the late 1970s. Steve has served on the Museum’s Board of Trustees since 2002, has been
the chair of the Facilities Committee since 2003, and served three years as Vice President. He became board
President in 2008. Steve is employed by the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport & Wells Water District. He is actively
involved with South Congregational Church and the Town of Kennebunk’s Bicentennial Committee. He has been
a trustee at the Kennebunk Free Library and is a former president of the alumni association for the University of
Maine-Farmington.
Christopher J. Farr, Vice President
Chris became a full time resident of Kennebunkport in 2001 after 15 years of being a summer and weekend
visitor. His career has been in the field of Medical Imaging where he has focused on advanced imaging
modalities such as MR, CT and nuclear medicine devices and in the treatment of cancer using radiation. He is
currently Vice President of Sg2, a company based in Chicago that helps hospitals plan for new technologies. For
many years, Chris headed Philips Medical Systems’ business in North America and ran the Canadian operations
of Philips during a time that the company was growing through mergers and acquisitions. His career in medical
high technology began with Atomic Energy of Canada. He has worked extensively in Canada and the United
States, as well as overseas with hospitals in South East Asia, Australia, Africa, and the UK. Immediately prior to
joining Sg2, he owned and operated The Welby Inn in Kennebunkport. He has a MSc in physics from the
University of Toronto in Canada and a BSc from King's College of the University of London, England. Chris has
served two terms on the Museum’s Board of Trustees, beginning in 2003.
Stephanie Marshall Limmer, Secretary
Stephanie Limmer joined the Museum’s Board of Trustees in 2006, served as the chair of the Museum¹s
Education Committee, and most recently served a term as Vice President. She has also been a regular volunteer
on exhibition and archives projects. She is the Executive Director of the Kennebunk Library, where she combines
years of experience in both non-profit and for-profit business management for public libraries, America Online,
and medical publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Stephanie lives in Kennebunk with her husband Dan and
daughter Margo.
David N. Moravick, Treasurer
David and his family have lived in Granite Point, Biddeford since 1985. He is currently Senior Vice President of
Morris Insurance, the insurance division of Kennebunk Savings Bank. David is a Certified Insurance Counselor
working out of the Kennebunk Financial Center. Prior to joining Morris Insurance, he was Senior Loan Officer
for Rivergreen Bank. He has been a trustee and officer on several boards, including the Kennebunk Rotary,
United Way, McArthur Library Association and Trinity Episcopal Church. David joined The Brick Store
Museum’s Board of Trustees in 2005 and has served for four years as treasurer.
Candidates Nominated as Trustees, 2009 – 2010
Kathy Graham, Nominated for a 1st term as trustee
Kathy and her husband, Kevin, have been coming to Maine for many years to a camp on a lake in northern Maine.
They moved to Harpswell, Maine, in 2001, and Kathy was part of the docent program at the Portland Museum of
Art. She was the director of a nursery school in East Hampton, New York, before moving to Maine and opened a
nursery school in Harpswell. Her father always worked as a museum director, and Kathy was inspired by his
energy and enthusiasm in creating programs to bring the community into the world of art. Kathy and Kevin
moved to Wells in April 2008. She is pleased at the opportunity to serve on the Museum’s Board.
Janet Wolf, Nominated for a 1st term as trustee
Janet Wolf moved to Kennebunkport in 1999 when she and her husband Rick bought the Captain Fairfield Inn.
Both Janet and Rick immediately joined and started volunteering at the Museum. Janet is a member of the
Museum’s Education Committee and has conducted many historic Summer Street architectural walking tours, as
well as volunteered for the Museum wherever and whenever needed. Janet has a background in theater and dance
and performed and taught ballet for many years. Before becoming an innkeeper, she was the director of the
primary fund raising event at a private school in Connecticut for five years. Janet and her husband Rick are
currently partners in The B&B Team, a firm that provides brokerage and consulting services to the small lodging
industry nationally.

NEW 2008 – 2009 Exhibitions
Upcoming in 2009
Mailed from Maine: Vintage Postcards of the Kennebunks
Learn the ins and outs of deltiology—or postcard collecting—with examples culled
from the hundreds of postcards in the Museum’s collections. Become an expert at
discerning the era of a postcard simply by looking at it. See why what’s on the back of
a card can be even more important than the image on its front. Be captivated by vintage
scenes of the Kennebunks ranging from the newsy to the picturesque to the fanciful!
Upcoming in 2009
Pennies to Ride: The Kennebunks’ Turn-of-the-Century Trolleys
This exhibition is the result of a collaborative project with our colleagues at the Seashore Trolley
Museum, in conjunction with their restoration of an Atlantic Shoreline Trolley car. Our
interpretive portion will take a look back at the age of trolley travel in downtown Kennebunk in
the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Upcoming in 2009
Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Kennebunk’s National Register Historic District
This landmarks exhibition commemorates the 35th anniversary of downtown Kennebunk’s designation as a
National Register Historic District. In 1963, Kennebunk was the first town in Maine to establish an historic
district; it was recognized on the National Register in 1974. Included are fine examples of Colonial, Federal,
Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival architecture.
Opening June 20, 2009 and on view through 2009
Quilts from the Collections of the Brick Store Museum
From inspirational Civil War quilts made by local Ladies Aid Societies to a
brightly-colored 1880s crazy quilt with a secret pouch, there are more than 40
quilts of varying sizes and patterns in the Museum’s permanent collections.
Admire a selection of these practical and beautiful masterpieces from the 18th to 20th centuries and learn the
stories they have to tell. Made possible by the Museum’s proud business partner, Ocean Bank.
June 12, 2009 – ongoing
History Showcase | Happy Birthday, “41”!
With former President George H. W. Bush’s 85th birthday on June 12, 2009, comes an
opportunity to reflect upon what he has meant to the Kennebunks, as well as what the
Kennebunks—so often referred to as his “anchor to windward”—have meant to him. This
birthday salute draws upon personal snapshots, Kennebunkport souvenirs, local headlines
and campaign buttons. It even includes a giant card upon which visitors can pen their
greetings, which will be presented to the President later this summer. In addition, the display encourages locals
to document their own recollections of the President, First Family, press corps, and Secret Service over the
years. These anecdotes will be added to the Museum’s archival collections chronicling the President’s enduring
presence in the community. Made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Ocean Bank, Captain
Jefferds Inn, Captain Lord Mansion, and Kennebunk Savings Bank.
May 2, 2009 – ongoing
History Showcase | The Nation’s Guest: Lafayette’s 1825 Visit to Kennebunk
In 1824 and 1825, the aging American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette made a
farewell tour of the United States as the “the nation’s guest.” His epic journey included an
afternoon stopover in Kennebunk in 1825. See the artifacts and archival materials that tell what
transpired that June day and learn about the long-term impact Lafayette’s visit would have on
the community. Made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Ocean Bank, Captain
Jefferds Inn, Captain Lord Mansion, and Kennebunk Savings Bank.
April 2009 and February/October/December 2008
Through MSAD 71’s Stretch Beyond Program, we offered several sessions of
“Hands-On History,” a multiweek after-school course for elementary school students. They learned about history
and museums via a variety of projects, including building ship models, painting floor cloths, making punched tin
tiles, and creating mini-museums. The final sessions entail a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum and a
display of all the students’ projects—complete with an “opening reception” for these budding curators and their
families. The projects then go on display at Kennebunk Elementary School.

Renovations Revealed!
This exhibit presents the nearly 200-year history of the museum’s buildings
and invites you to explore their recent structural renovations through artifacts,
more than 40 construction photos, materials…and the very buildings themselves!
Out of the basements, through the walls and into the attics, you’ll discover what powderpost beetles can do, how
nails are made, and why there are now three steel beams in the buildings. Finally, in a section on "Basement
Archaeology," see a number of items—from an early light bulb to an unique patent medicine bottle—uncovered
by the construction crews. Made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®,
Captain Lord Mansion, Cole Harrison Insurance and Ocean Bank.
March 1 – 31, 2009
Out of the Kitchen and Into History
For the month of March, the Museum was pleased to have a wide variety of kitchen
implements from our housewares collections on view in the vestibule display case at
the Kennebunk Free Library. Out of the Kitchen and into History featured baskets,
butter molds, tollware and more. In this age of microwave ovens and food processors,
there were even a few items that stumped visitors as to their original uses!
October 21, 2008 – May 29, 2009
History Showcase | Chronicling Commerce
The Museum is the steward of hundreds of photographs, documents, and
artifacts that record our area’s business heritage from the earliest days to the
present. Commercial ephemera spanning the past 200 years was the subject of this “History Showcase.”
Business cards, advertising pieces, brochures, products and packaging spoke to the diversity of industries that
have called the Kennebunks their headquarters.
Made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion,
Ocean Bank, and Captain Jefferds Inn.

October 18, 2008 – May 6, 2009
History Showcase | Mourning Glory: Funerary Tributes of the Victorian Era
Weeping veils, intricate hair wreaths, funerary paintings and lockets helped illustrate
traditional mourning customs of the 1800s. Visitors saw a full mourning dress, an
extraordinary letter linked to one of the most shocking and tragic moments in American
history, and much more. Made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Jeffrey A.
Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion, Ocean Bank, and Captain Jefferds Inn.
July 22 - December 31, 2008
Living Little: A Selection of Dollhouses & Architectural Models
From playthings to family heirlooms, dollhouses have long captured the
imaginations of young and old. Visitors' imaginations ran wild amidst this
selection of not-so-small wonders both from the Museum and on loan from
private collections. With architecture rivaling that of Kennebunk’s historic
district, these miniature structures fascinated visitors for their beauty, creativity and attention to detail. Among
the pieces were a log cabin, a lighthouse, a grand Victorian, a small-scale replica of Kennebunkport’s South
Congregational Church, and a general store that would look right at home on Main Street Kennebunk at the turn
of the century. Also on view were house models by early Kennebunk architect William Barry (1846-1932) and a
scale model of the historic gates to Kennebunk’s Hope Cemetery. Made possible by the Museum's proud
business partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion and Ocean Bank.
July 1, 2008 - ongoing
Salon Style: Fine Art from the 1830s to the 1920s
The Brick Store Museum temporarily packed away some of its collections for
safekeeping during structural restoration work on its historical buildings. Rather
than crate up the museum's works of fine art that are in ornate and delicate gilded
frames, we opted instead to exhibit as many as possible in our upstairs gallery. This
installation entitled, Salon Style, is so named for the stacked display format made popular by private collectors of
the 18th and 19th centuries to showcase their holdings. Thirty-two paintings—including many that have not
been on public view in years—create an impressive cavalcade of primarily American art from the 1830s to the
1920s. Stunning still lifes, idyllic landscapes, and heroic seascapes are interspersed among genre paintings and
portraiture of early Kennebunk notables. Featured artists include Josef Arentz (1903-1969), Thomas Badger
(1792-1868), Abbott Fuller Graves (1859-1936), E. L. Ipsen (1869-1951), W. L. Metcalf (1858-1925), Hannah
Brown Skeele (1829-1901), and D. A. Teupken (1828-1859). Made possible by the Museum's proud business
partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion and Ocean Bank.
May 22 – October 18, 2008
History Showcase | Fanfare for Summer
This installment celebrated the arrival of warmer weather by presenting fifteen of the
museum's more than 100 decorative hand-held fans from around the world, dating back more
than two centuries. These unique fans were patriotic, colorful, commemorative, feathered, and
bedazzled. Visitors had a chance to see the fans and learn about their history as breeze makers,
fashion accessories, and secret signalers. Made possible by the Museum's proud business
partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion, Captain Jefferds Inn, and Ocean
Bank.
March 1 – May 21, 2008
History Showcase | Around the World with Edith Barry
The History Showcase is a thematic display case offering changing mini-exhibitions throughout
the year—an innovative way of highlighting special collections and/or recent acquisitions and
ensuring that returning visitors are always seeing something unique. Our first-ever History
Showcase featured the world travels of the Museum's illustrious founder, Edith Cleaves Barry
(1884-1969). Through ephemera, photos and souvenirs, visitors traced her journeys during the
"Golden Age of Travel" to the Orient, the wilds of Africa, and the Egyptian pyramids. Made
possible by the Museum’s proud business partners: Captain Lord Mansion, Captain Jefferds Inn, and Cole
Harrison Insurance.
February 23 – May 3, 2008
Faces of the Kennebunks by Portrait Photographer Liam Crotty
The exhibition invited a look through the lens of local portrait photographer
Liam Crotty to see the diversity and depth of character and talent found in the
Kennebunks. Faces of the Kennebunks featured 23 color and black-and-white,
large-format images that touched upon the contemporary fabric of the
community—whether it was a popular teacher, longtime volunteer, Tony Award
winner, or former NASCAR champion. Further enhancing the portraits were
artifacts on loan from those photographed, adding three-dimensional components to the portrait groupings. Each
treatment also included textual insight from Liam Crotty, brief biographical information, and a reflection from
the subject on what the Kennebunks signified to him or her. Represented were Dan and Sarah Beard; Cecil
Benson; Richard Bibber; Mary Lou Boucouvales; Nanci Grenier Boutet; Tom Bradbury; Joyce Butler; John
Downing; Joe Foster; Mary Greely; Karl Hooper; Reverend Robert Howes; Sonny Hutchins; Richard McCabe;
Mac McHale; Russell Nype; W. Robert Paine; Susan Falcone Plass; Ken Raynor; Mike and Sandy Severance;
Joel Stevens; Matt Whitney; and Tom Wiley. The exhibition continues as a virtual, online exhibition through the
Museum’s website at http://www.brickstoremuseum.org/fotk_online.html. Exhibition and related programming
sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Bank, with additional exhibition support from our proud business partner, The
Captain Lord Mansion.
