One of the best ways of helping children to develop oral language skills is through nursery rhymes. The rhythm of nursery rhymes invites young children's attention and involvement. Appropriate nursery rhymes about familiar things in the children's environment should be read to children as often as possible so that they will get a lot of practice in listening and repeating simple Standard English Structures. It is hoped that the words of familiar nursery rhymes will gradually be incorporated into the children's speaking vocabulary. Young children love nursery rhymes with actions. Therefore they should be encouraged to dramatise nursery rhymes in order to understand the meaning of the language. Nursery rhymes can also be used to: a) Introduce new vocabulary. b) Teach simple Standard English Structures. Develop comprehension skills e.g. asking and c) answering questions on the nursery rhymes. Develop Phonemic Awareness e.g. identifying rhyming d) sounds and initial consonant sounds. e) Relieve stress and tension. Stimulate the children's imagination. f) Provide a vary simple form of drama. g) h) i) j) Teach Mathematics, Social Studies, Health and Family Life Education and Science concepts. Extend children's experience and add a magical aspect to language activities. Introduce young children to literature. BOOKS So much to choose from! So many books!
