INTRODUCTION
One of the most important skills necessary for reading — i.e.
the interpretation of Printed Language is the ability to use
and interpret Oral Language.
One of the best ways of helping children to develop oral
language skills is through nursery rhymes.
The rhythm of nursery rhymes invites young children's
attention and involvement.
Appropriate nursery rhymes about familiar things in the
children's environment should be read to children as often as
possible so that they will get a lot of practice in listening and
repeating simple Standard English Structures. It is hoped
that the words of familiar nursery rhymes will gradually be
incorporated into the children's speaking vocabulary.
Young children love nursery rhymes with actions. Therefore
they should be encouraged to dramatise nursery rhymes in
order to understand the meaning of the language.
Nursery rhymes can also be used to:
a)
Introduce new vocabulary.
b)
Teach simple Standard English Structures.
Develop comprehension skills e.g. asking and
c)
answering questions on the nursery rhymes.
Develop Phonemic Awareness e.g. identifying rhyming
d)
sounds and initial consonant sounds.
e)
Relieve stress and tension.
Stimulate the children's imagination.
f)
Provide a vary simple form of drama.
g)
h)
i)
j)
Teach Mathematics, Social Studies, Health and Family
Life Education and Science concepts.
Extend children's experience and add a magical aspect
to language activities.
Introduce young children to literature.
BOOKS
So much to choose from! So many books!
Let's take our time and sit down and look.
Books about princesses and witches and fairies,
Books about monsters and other hairy scaries.
Pop—up books to make you laugh,
Waterproof books to take in the bath.
Books about making things, and things to do.
Books about visits to the farm and the zoo.
Books about animals and insects and birds.
Books full of pictures. Books full of words.
So much to choose from. Let's take our time.
How about this one? A book full of rhymes.

Animals at
Home and in
Our
Environment
TEN FLUFFY CHICKENS
Five eggs and five eggs
That makes ten
Sitting on top is the Mother Hen
Crackle, crackle, crackle
What do I see?
Ten fluffy chickens
As yellow as can be!
HERE IS A BEE HIVE
Here is a bee hive
But where are the bees?
They are inside where nobody sees
Now they come creeping out of the hive
One, two, three, four, five
3
A KITTEN
A kitten is fast asleep
Under the chair
And Susy can't find her anywhere
She looked under the bed
She looked under the table.
And then Susy said
"Come Kitty! Come Kitty
This milk is for you"
And out came Kitty
Answering "Mew! Mew! Mew!"
THE BEE
I looked in
the cupboard
And what did I see?
A
black pee
Looking at me
4
FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS
Five little monkeys
were swinging from a tree
Teasing Mr. Alligator
"You can't catch me."
But Mr. Alligator was sneaky
as sneaky can be
He made Snap! Snap Snap!
And only four little monkeys
were left
Swinging from the tree.
Four little monkeys
were swinging from a tree
Teasing Mr. Alligator
"You can't catch me."
But Mr. Alligator was sneaky
as sneaky can be
He made Snap! Snap Snap!
And only three little monkeys
were left
Swinging from the tree.
ANTS
The ants go marching one by one
Hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one
Hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one
The little one stops to suck his thumb
Hurrah, hurrah
ANTS
When all the ants
are on the ground,
I do not make a sound
But when the ants
Crawl on my arm
I say Ah! Ah! Ah!
Till they all crawl away
THE TURKEY
The turkey is a funny fellow
His head goes wobble wobble
And all he knows is just one word
Gobble!, gobble!, gobble!.
THE TURKEY
The turkey went for a walk on a bright sunshiny day.
And on the way he met the duck.
Gobble! Gobble.... said the turkey
Quack! Quack! Said the duck
And then they both went on their way.
MY FURRY KITTEN
I have a kitten
She can purr, purr, purr
I love my little kitten
She is covered with fur, fur, fur
7
FIVE TURKEYS
Five big turkeys sitting on the gate
The first one said, "It's getting late.
The second one said, "Who goes there?"
The third one said, "There are farmers everywhere."
The fourth one said, "Let's run, run, run!"
The fifth one said, "It's just more fun!"
Five fat turkeys are we.
We slept all night in a tree.
When the cook came around,
We couldn't be found,
And that's why we're here, you see.
THE MOUSE
A little mouse hid in a hole
Hid softly in a little hole.
When all was quiet
As quiet as can be
OUT POPPED HE!
8
THE RABBIT
Do you know the rabbit
With two ears, so very long
Who can hop, hop, hop about
On legs so small and strong
Who can nibble, nibble carrots
For his dinner every day
And when he's had enough
He scampers fast away?
9
SMALL ANIMALS PARADE
A slow, slow snail
Drags down the trail,
A looping earthworm
Moves along with a squirm.
A spider runs past
With eight legs so fast,
The grasshopper springs
With six legs and wings.
The green and white frog
Leaps over a log.
A seven fin fish
Swims by with a swish.
10
FIVE LITTLE DUCKS
Five little ducks that I once knew
Fat ones, thin ones, skinny ones too
But the one little duck
With the feather on his back
He rules the others with a quack, quack, quack
Down to the water they would go
Waddle, waddle, waddle, waddle
All in a row
But the one little duck
With the feather on his back
He rules the others with a
Quack, quack, quack!
FIVE LITTLE DUCKS
Five little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far, far away
Mother Duck said:
Quack, quack, quack!
And only four little ducks
Came swimming back
Repeat:
Four ...................... Three
Three ................... Two
Two .................... One
11
THE BABY CHICK
Peck! Peck! Peck!
Went the little chick's beak.
Out poked her head
As she took a little peek.
Out stepped her leg.
Out came her wing.
Then the fluffy yellow chick
Began to sing
"Take me to the water.
Show me the seed.
IF I'm going to live and grow,
This is what I'll need."
12
FIVE LITTLE DUCKS
Five little ducks
swimming in a lake
The first duck said
"Watch the waves I make"
The second duck said
"Swimming is such fun"
The third duck said
"I' rather sit in the sun"
The fourth duck said
"Let's swim away"
The fifth duck said
Oh! Let's stay"
Along came a speed boat with a
Plop! Plop! Plop!
So the five little ducks swam
away from the spot.
CROCODILE'S TOOTHACHE
Oh the Crocodile
Went to the dentist
And sat down in the chair,
And the dentist said, "Now tell me dear,
Why does it hurt and where?"
And the Crocodile said, "I'll tell you the truth.
I have a terrible ache in my tooth."
13
FIVE LITTLE MICE
Five little mice on the kitchen floor.
This little mouse peeked behind the door.
This little mouse nibbled at the cake.
This little mouse not a sound did he make.
This little mouse took a bite of cake.
This little mouse heard the kitten sneeze.
"Ah — choo!" sneezed the kitten
And `squeak' they cried.
As they found a hole and ran inside.
MICE
I think mice
Are rather nice
Their tails are long
Their faces small
They haven't any
Chins at all
Their ears are pink
Their teeth are white
They run about
The house at night
They nibble things
They shouldn't touch
And no-one seems
TO like them much
But I think mice
Are nice!
FIVE LITTLE MICE
Five little mice on the kitchen floor
Looking for breadcrumbs
Or something more
Five little mice on the shelf up high
Eating so nicely on a pie
But the big round eyes of the wise old cat
Saw what the five little mice were at
Quickly he jumped, but the mice ran away
And hid in their snug little hole all day
14
FIVE LITTLE FISHES
Five little fishes swimming in a pond.
The first one said "I'm tired"
as he yawned.
The second one said
"Well let's take a nap."
The third one said
"Put on your sleeping cap."
FIVE LITTLE DUCKLINGS
Quack! quack! quack!
Quack! quack! quack!
Waddling as they go
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Ducklings in a row.
The fourth one said
"Wake up! Don't Sleep!"
THE FURRY BUNNY
The fifth one said
"Let's swim where it's deep."
A went to say Good Morning
To a little furry bunny
So, the five little fishes swam away.
But came back the very next day.
He sat beside his doorway
For the day was bright and sunny
But oh! I have to tell you
He would not stay to play
He turned his little tail
And scampered far away
15
THE CATERPILLAR
A caterpillar crawled to the top of a tree.
"I think I'll take a nap!" said he
So under a leaf he began to creep
To spin his chrysalis and fall asleep.
All day long he slept in his chrysalis bed,
Till another caterpillar came along and said
"Wake up! It is time to get out of bed."
When he opened his eyes that sunny day
He saw he was a butter fly and flew away.
16
MY DOG
I have a dog. His name is Rags.
He eats so much
MY DOG
His nose is short and scrubby
His ears hang rather low.
And he always brings the stick back
No matter how far you throw.
That his tummy sags.
His ears flip-flop
And his tail wig-wags.
And when he walks
He follows me everywhere I go
And even when I swim.
I laugh because he thinks, you know
That I belong to him.
He zigs and zags.
ONE LITTLE MOUSE
One little brown and whiskery mouse
Lived in a hole in a cozy house.
Out came a big, white fluffy cat
To take a sweet and juicy treat.
So the little mouse ran with a squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak
Squeak, squeak, squeak,
Squeak, squeak, squeak,
The little mouse ran away with a squeak, squeak.

To eat the finest mud pies
In the whole country?
TEDDY BEAR
You never see a teddy bear with his slippers on

Best of all.
Myself

Plants at
Horne arid in
our
Environment
PLANTS
Plants need care to help them grow,
Just like boys and girls you know.
Good soil, water, sunshine bright,
Then watch them pop up overnight.
LITTLE FLOWER
If I were a little flower,
I'd raise my head and grow and grow,
And stretch my arms and grow and grow
And nod my head and say
"I'm glad to see you all today!
LITTLE SEED
If I were just a little seed
Sleeping underneath the ground,
I'd raise my head and grow, and grow,
And stretch my arms and grow, and grow,
And nod my head when you pass by,
And sweetly smile and say
"How are you today?"

Three Little Pumpkins
Three little pumpkins growing on a vine,
Sitting in the sunlight looking just fine.
Along came the farmer who picked just one,
To take it home to make a pumpkin bun.
BUTTERCUPS
Five little buttercups
Yelrow and bright,
Watch them open in bright sunlight.
And see how they close when it is night.
MY GARDEN
This is my garden,
I'll rake it with care.
And then some flower seeds
I'll plant right there.
The sun will shine,
And the rain will fall.
And my garden will blossom
With plants straight and tall.
59
MANGO TREE
This is the tree
With leaves so green,
Here are the mangoes
That hang in between.
When the wind blows,
The mangoes will fall.
Here is a basket to gather them all.
MANGO TREE
Way up high in a mango tree
Two little mangoes smiled at me.
I shook the tree
As hard as I could,
Down came the mangoes,
Ummm —they were good!
60

Little Pumpkin lived on a vine,
Little Pumpkin thought it was fine.

FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said, "oh! it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are birds in the air."
The third one said, "I don't care."
The fourth one said, "We'll have a lot of fun.
Let's run and run and run."
"Woo-oo-oo" went the wind.
And out (Clap) went the light
And the five little pumpkins rolled right out of sight.

And have a bakery shop
I'll bake lots of cakes
And never-ever stop.
"Do you have any bread?

Have a slice of cake instead!"

See the barber cut my hair
Snipping here and snipping there
"Don't move" he says "until I'm done"
So I sit still.
Cutting hair is so much fun!
THE FISHERMAN
The fisherman rows his boat along
His arms are beautifully brown and strong.
He throws his net into the sea,
And pulls out a fish as big as can be!
THE GARBAGE COLLECTOR
The Garbage Collector is the strange man
Who rattles and bangs the garbage can.
In a big yellow truck he collects our waste
And gives us a smile even when he is in haste.
THE POSTMAN
Early in the morning
At eight o'clock
I can hear the postman
Knock, knock, knock
Up jumps Janet
And goes to the door
One letter, two letters, three letters, four!
THE DENTIST
I'd like to be a dentist with a plate upon the door,
And a little bubbling fountain in the middle of the floor.
With lots of tiny bottles arranged in coloured rows,
And a long white coat to protect my clothes.
And every Sunday afternoon when nobody was there,
I would go riding up and down the velvet chair.
65
COMMUNITY WORKERS

Rat-tat-tat!
The qprimge plan with his truck
There's the postman at the

door
He always knocks like that
The poWnqp with his heavy bag
No matter who it's for
Who brings the letters along
It might be a letter
The Milkman with his bottles
And it might be a box
Of milk to make me strong
So I'm always very glad
I'm sure that helping others
When the postman knocks.
,
Is part of a great plan
So I will be a helper too
Rat-tat-tat!
In any way I can.
Shall I run along to see
If he is at the door
THE POSTMAN
With something meant for me?
Each day I wait for the Postman
To see what he will bring
A letter or a parcel
That's just the very thing.
Lots of letters in his bag
One specially for me
The Postman is a helper
And that's what I will be!

FIVE STRONG POLICEMEN
Five strong policemen, standing by a store,
One became a traffic cop, then there were four.
Four strong policemen, watching over me,
One took a lost boy home then there were three.
Three strong policemen, with shirts all blue,
One stopped a speeding car then there were two.
Two strong policemen, how fast can they run?
One caught a bad man then there was one.
One strong policeman saw some smoke one-day,
He called the firefighters who put it out right away.
67
TEN LITTLE FIREMEN
Ten little firemen sleeping in a row
Ding dong goes the bell
And down the pole they go
Off on the engine, oh, oh, oh
Using the big hose, so, so, so
When all the fire's out
Home so-a-glow,
Back to bed all in a row.
THE POSTMAN
I come from the post office,
My mail sack on my back.
I go to all the houses
Leaving letters from my pack.
SOLDIERS
Five little soldiers standing in a row
Three stood straight, and two stood so.

And what do you think?
They all stood up straight!
As quick as a wink

And his saw goes see, saw, see
He saws and measures and hammers

While he builds a house for you and me.
I AM A TAILOR
I am a tailor making clothes
Stitch, stitch, stitch my needle goes.

COMMUNITY WORKERS
What if the milkman forgot to stop
Just pushed his cart right by?
I would fill up my bowl with cornflakes
And then have to eat them dry!
What if the garbage man forgot to stop
Just passed our house right by?
Our bin would be full of garbage
In a pile right up to the sky!
What if the postman forgot to stop
Just walked with his bag far away?
I would have to write a long letter
For him to bring the next day!
THE CARPENTER
This is the way he saws the wood
Sawing, sawing, sawing
(make sawing motion)
This is the way he nails a nail
Nailing, nailing, nailing
(make hammering motion)

One half for me and the other half for you"
HEALTHY FOODS
One glass of milk for me each day
Will make me healthy, happy and gay
And if I take my milk each day
It will keep the doctor far away.
73
MAKING COOKIES
I am making cookie dough
Round and round the beaters go
Add some flour from a cup
Stir and stir the batter up
Roll them, cut them nice and neat
Put them on a cookie sheet
Bake them, count them -cane, two, three
Serve them to my friends for tea.
FOUR LITTLE JAM TARTS
Four little jam tarts
Mummy made for tea
One for daddy
One for mummy
That leaves two for me!
MAKING COOKIES
Knead the dough and roll it flat
Then cut cookies just like that
Into the oven, watch them go
They must bake a while, you know
When they're brown and nicely done
Well have cookies for everyone!

Put them in a pot,
Heat them up and watch them pop.

Then they are done.
Popping corn is lots of fun.

I've done it all my life
It makes the bread taste yummy
And it's good for a healthy life.

Habits
I CAN TIE MY SHOELACE
I can tie my shoelace
I can brush my hair
I can wash my hands and face
And dry myself with care
I can clean my teeth too
And I can say "How do you do?"
HELLO MR. TOOTH BRUSH
You are a friend of mine
You keep my teeth in order
And make them fairly shine
You brush them every morning
You brush them every night
And surely Mr. Tooth brush
You are a friend all right.
77
PICK-UP TIME
Pick up the ball, pick up the bat
Pick up the fuzzy kitty-cat
Into the big toy box they must go
Then close the lid with care, just so
All happy helpers do their share
To make their rooms neat everywhere!
A HAPPY HELPER
In the morning when I awake
Very quickly my bed I make
Put on my clothes and shoes with care
Hang up my pyjamas, and comb my hair!
I CAN HELP DO DISHES
Swishety-swish the dishes go
In the water to and fro.
Mother washes while I try
To get the dishes very dry!
78
SHOELACES
Although I have tried and
tried and tried,
I cannot keep my shoelaces tied.
I really don't know
What to do.
Unless I stick them
tied with glue.
WASHING CLOTHES
In soapy water
I wash my clothes
And hang them out to day
The sun, it shines
The wind, it blows
The water goes into the sky.
WASHING DISHES
Sing a song of washing up
Water hot as hot
Cups and saucers, plates and spoons
Dishes — such a lot
Work the dishcloth round and round
Wash them clean as clean
Polish with a dry white cloth
How busy we have been!
79
WASHING HANDS
This right hand is a very fine hand
This left hand is its brother.
Together they wash with soap and water
One hand washes the other.
GETTING DRESSED
When I get up in the morning
I'll tell you what I do
I wash my hands and wash my face
Splishety—splash, splishety—splash
I clean my teeth till they're shining white
Scrubbity—scrub, scrubbity—scrub
Then I put on my clothes and brush my hair
And runnity—run, I run downstairs.
WASHING HANDS
I must always wash my hands
Before I take my meals,
Or else the germs from both of them
Will get inside of me.
80
MY SOAP
Just when I'm ready to start on my ears
This is the time my soap disappears.
It jumps from my fingers and slithers and slides
Down to the end of the tub where it hides.
And acts in the most disobedient way
And that's why my soap's growing thinner each day.
AFTER A BATH
After a bath I try, try, try
To wipe myself till I'm dry, dry, dry
Hands to wipe and fingers and toes
And two wet legs and a shiny nose
Just think how much less time I'd take
If I were a dog and could shake! shake! shake!
81
HEALTHY CLEAN-UP TIME
Let's clean up today
Let's clean up today
We've had our fun
Our day is done.
So, lets clean up today.
CLEAN-UP TIME (TUNE- LONDON BRIDGE)
Pretty leaves are falling down
Falling down, falling down,
Pretty leaves are falling down
All around the town.
We cannot leave them on the ground,
On the ground, On the ground,
We cannot leave them on the ground,
All around the town.
Oh help me, help me, pick them up
pick them up, pick them up,
Oh help me, help me, pick them up
From all around the town

Road Safety
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Twinkle, twinkle traffic lights
Standing on the corner bright.
Green means GO we all know.
Amber means WAIT, even if you are late.
Read means STOP (pause)
Twinkle, twinkle traffic lights
Standing on the corner bright.
KERB DRILL
On your way to school
If a road you have to cross
With the traffic on its way
Here's a rule to learn
As you stand on the kerb
It's an easy rhyme to say:
Refrain:
Eyes right! Eyes left!
Eyes right once again
Then, if the road is clean
Quick march! Don't rush
You may cross the road
For there's nothing now to fear.
85
WITH YOUR BAT AND YOUR BALL
On the road do not play
And remember, too
When you're crossing the road
There's a rhyme you have to say:
Refrain:
Eyes right! Eyes left
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
If the light shines Red, don't move
If the light shines Amber, don't move
But when it's clearly seen to turn to Green
Why, then you may safely move.
86
TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Red tight, red light, what do you say?
I say stop, and stop right away,
Yellow light, yellow light, what do you mean?
I mean wait till the lights turn green,
Green light, green light, what do you say?
I say cross, but please look each way
Thank-you, thank-you: red, yellow, green
Now we know what the traffic lights mean.
STOP! SAYS THE RED LIGHT
Stop! Says the red light
Go! Says the green,'
Be careful! Says the yellow light
Twinkling in between.

Higher and higher and ever so high!

Beep! Beep! Beep!

All through the town.
The wipers on the bus
Go Swish! Swish! Swish!
Swishl Swish! Swish!

All through the town.

BOATS
Over the river every day
Big boats, little boats
travel on their way.
Away down the river, a hundred miles or more
Many, many captains will bring their boats ashore.
SPEEDBOATS
Down by the stelling
Early in the morning
See the little speedboats
All in a row.
The captain of the speedboat
Turns a little handle
Vroom! Vroom!
Splish! Splish
Off we go!

Our Weather
THE WEATHER
Two ducks went wadding down the lane
Said one to the other, "What beautiful rain!"
Two children came to the door with a frown
Said they "What a pity, it's pouring down!"
And old Mr Weather scratched his head
"You can't please everyone!" he said.
GOOD MORNING MR SUN
Good morning Mr Sun
Our day has just begun
We love to see your shining face
Good morning Mr Sun
RAINY DAY
Slip on your rain coat,
Pull up your boots
Wade in puddles,
Make splishes and splashes!
92
RAIN
From big black clouds
The raindrops fell.
Drip, drip, drip one day,
Until the bright sunlight changed them
Into a rainbow gay!
RAINY WEATHER (TUNE - B-I-N-G-0)
There was a day when we got wet
And rainy was the weather
R-A-I-N-Y
R-A-I-N-Y
R-A-I-N-Y
THE RAIN
I sit before the window pane,
And I look out at the rain,
It means no play outside today,
So inside I remain.
I watch the water dribble,
And turn the brown grass green,
And after a while I start to smile,
At nature's washing machine.
