Agenda
What is NWT HealthNet?
• A term used to describe set of electronic
systems that enhance patient safety and
quality of care.
• These systems will impact the way in which
health care providers and staff utilize and
access patient’s medical information and
deliver care.
• Encompasses iEHR, EMR, DI/PACS
Systems.
What is an interoperable Electronic Health Record (iEHR)?
• A secure and private
“lifetime” view of a patient’s
key health information

authorized health providers
anywhere, anytime in support
of high quality patient care
What are the benefits?

– Reduce unnecessary duplication of tests
• Reduce the incidence of medical error by
improving the accuracy and clarity of text
reports and lab results
• Mitigate the increasing healthcare service
demands on a constrained pool of
healthcare resources

What are we deploying?
• iEHR Viewer is a
web based portal
that allows
clinicians “view
only” access to key
patient information
• iEHR access will
be available
anytime, anywhere,
to support quality
patient care
• iEHR Viewer will
initially be
deployed in 2
stages, Release 1
and Release 2

How will the iEHR be secure and private?
• Legislation is being developed around; personal health
information, access to the information, and use & sharing of
information to ensure personal health information is being
safeguarded by all health care providers.
• Until this legislation is passed personal information will
continue to be protected by polices, procedures and ATIPP.
• Each user is restricted to the information they can access
based on their role and a need to know basis.
• The HealthNet Viewer has undergone additional control
assessments such as: Threat and Risk Assessment,
Vulnerability Assessment and Privacy Impact Assessments.
Network Security
(includes: strict policies,
threat/risk analysis,
connectivity standards)
Fob
(Secure Sign On)
Technical Security
(includes: authentication,
authorization, encryption,
audit logs, firewall, intrusion
detection, anti-virus)
Administrative
Security (includes:
Privacy Impact Assessment
(PIA), Audit of User access,
training, user ID registration,
confidentiality agreements)
The most remarkable
feature about twentyfirst century medicine is
that we hold it together
with nineteenth century
paperwork.
