You have accepted your Collage Program So what do you do next??????? Make Reservations If you plan to arrive before your check-in day make hotel reservations at least one month in advance. The high occupancy rates in the area can make it difficult to find rooms at the last minute. Disney’s most affordable rooms are at Disney’s All-Star Resorts, and Pop Century Resort. Money??? Before you come down make sure you have enough money to live off of for a few weeks. You will need money to buy things for your apartment and food. You will not receive your first pay check until you have been there for a couple of weeks so you need to be ready for those first expenses. Also your first pay check will have two your first two weeks of rent taken out so it will not be much. Identification Be sure to have your driver’s license/valid ID, your social security card or pass port for check in. Also, bring your medical insurance information. If you plan on bringing your car DO NOT FORGET your vehicle registration and insurance verification. You have to have these to be able to get a parking pass at your complex. Now its time to say GOOD-BYE Do not plan to take any trips home while you are on your program. Your commitment to the Walt Disney World College Program last until the date specified in your job interest letter. Do not plan on traveling home until after that date unless there is an emergency. Overnight Guest Policy Take the overnight guest policy seriously. Many students arrive in FL and do not expect the policy to be enforced. If you are caught with a guest on property past 1am, you will be sent home. Do not take the risk because it is not worth it, they are serious. Please do not test them. Trouble does not always happen with the “other person” but it can happen to you!!!! Also do not try to sneak people in your trunk after 1am because the security guards do check your trunk sometimes. Get Ready for the experience of a lifetime!!!!! The Unofficial What to Bring List Some of the following items can be bought once you arrive in Orlando. However, if you have the money to buy it now and the room to pack it, do it! Starting down there can be rather expensive, so the more you already have the better. YOUR CAR While bus transportation is provided, it is limited. It takes you to and from work, Wal-Mart and that is about it. If you want to go to the beach, to Miami, Cape Canaveral, ETC you need a car. If you cannot your car, do not panic transportation provides the basics, just not the luxuries. If you have the option though, TAKE IT, if not make a friend with someone who was able to bring a car. Be sure to give them some gas money. LINENS The rooms are furnished with twin size beds. Therefore, you should bring sheets, a comforter, two bath towels, hand towels, a bath mat, a washcloth, and a dishcloth and pot holders for the kitchen. And do not forget the Pillows. Although if you do not have the room most of this stuff can be purchased at Walmart then discarded at the end of your program. ELECTRONICS If you have them and have the room then take them with you. You do not know if your roommates will have one so take them if you can. If not you can always go in with your roommates and buy a cheap one. An alarm Clock or stereo to play music and wake up to is a much needed item. Or if you have a cell phone with an alarm that works also. POSTERS Take posters for your walls. Be creative when you get in your apartment they all need a touch to make them home…. (Special tip: Park Maps and pictures of you and fellow CPs is a nice and cheap way to decorate. You can even frame the pictures with expired fast passes. MOVIES Movies can be a great thing to have. After the first month, the feeling of being on vacation starts to wear off, and staying home to watch a movie can be a nice change. MISS Extension Cords If you have a Laptop then take that as well. You have High speed internet in your apartments and it saves you from going to the labs. Your favorite stuffed animal. It gets a little lonely at times when you are far from what is familiar to you. Take something from home that will help ease the transition. CLOTHING Don’t forget your bathing suit! You are going to be in Florida Make sure to pack warm cloths for those chilly nights and umbrella/raincoat. Florida weather can be a little tricky at times, and it does sometimes get chilly. So be prepared. Business Clothing. You do not need to take your professional business suits, but just business casual attire (slacks, blouses, skirts, ties(for the guys) etc). They are picky, so make sure the skirts are a reasonable length. They theoretically do not like sleeveless blouses, its not always enforced though but just be aware. No flip-flops and shoes are to be closed toe and have a heel. You wear these clothes during your class time, training, at and at seminars available for you to attend. All other times when you are off the clock, you can wear whatever you want. Most of the things listed here are not necessities, and some cannot be taken unless you drive. This is just to provide you with some background information on what is nice to have while you are on the program If you do choose to fly, another option you have is to have your stuff mailed to you. Box up what you cannot fit in your bags: get it packed up and ready to go. Once you arrive in Florida, call Mom and Dad with your new address and have them mail it to you (with insurance). This would be a great way to get extra linens and things down to the Sunshine State, just do not forget to insure it. Fact about Laundry When you arrive you will need to buy a Mac card for $5.00. You can split this cost with your roommate and then load money on them as you need it. The Bare Necessities Avoid this super market at all chances. The bus takes you to the Crossroads shopping center where the store is located. It is geared towards tourist and the prices are extremely high. Product lines are limited too. A favorite for most Floridians, Publix offers a clean selection of produce, groceries and souvenirs since it is in the heart of tourism country. The prices are a few cents higher than normal due to the large draw of tourists, but you will get more food for your money here than at Gooding’s. There is one not far from Chatham Square Apartment complex, within walking distance. Located on Apoka-Vineland Rd. Yes they do exist. Super Target is located just a few miles from the complexes. To get there you do need a car to get there you go down SR 535 turn left on to 192 and it is up on your left. The grocery heaven for all CP’s, and they have just built a new one that is just a mile or so from the complexes. It is located on your right on SR 535. Property Control Ok, so you’ve got your heart set on a $75.00 snow globe you found at the Magic Kingdom, but you are not willing to fork over the cash, even after your discount? All you need is your Disney ID and you are ready for the lights, camera, and action! Mickey’s Retreat Some of you will get to know this place very well if you are a lifeguard. This is where you will probably train for three days. Otherwise, you might never know that this recreational facility was created to allow Cast Members and their families a place to gather and enjoy time off from work. Mickey’s Retreat offers two pools, a lake, canoes, paddleboats, recreation house, and picnic areas. It’s located across the street from Chatham Square. Dining Bahama Breeze Is located across the street from Vista Way, and just around the corner from Chatham and the Commons: you can’t miss it. The restaurant has a Jamaican theme and is great!
