Developing Proficiency:
Dividing by 2-Digit Divisors
5
Dear Family,
In this topic, your student continues to develop his or her understanding of
division. He or she will use the standard algorithm for dividing whole numbers
using up to a two-digit divisor to find quotients with up to 3 digits.
Your student will also analyze given information, draw diagrams, and write
equations to solve problems accurately and efficiently.
Here are two activities that you can do with your student to help him or her
review division and practice dividing greater numbers by two-digit divisors.
Reviewing Division
Step 1 Show this example. 30) 379
Have your student explain how to divide.
Step 2 Have your student list the operations used to find the quotient.
(To divide the tens: divide: 37 , 30 = 1, multiply: 1 × 30 = 30,
subtract: 37 - 30 = 7. Next, to divide the ones: divide: 79 , 30 = 2,
multiply: 2 × 30 = 60, subtract: 79 - 60 = 19.)
Step 3 Have your student identify the remainder and then write the
entire quotient. (12 R19)
Right on Target
Materials: paper, pencil, timer
Step 1 Each player writes a four-digit number on a sheet of paper
and passes it to another player.
Step 2 Players use the number they are passed as a dividend for a
division problem. For example: ) 4,192
Step 3 Players have one minute to find a divisor that will give a
quotient that is close to 500. Encourage your student to use rounded
or compatible numbers and look for basic division facts to help.
Step 4 Repeat with other four-digit dividends and other quotients.
