November 2016 - Community United Methodist Church

November 2016
Dear Friends,
Believe it or not, the
Elections will be over in
about a week when you
are reading this! If that
doesn't give you something to be Thankful for, I
don't know what will!
We will have elected
whoever we are going to
elect and they will be
preparing to start their administration or continuing their administration
as the case may be. It will be a time of
hope and fear, depending on how vitally important you see this election being from your perspective.
I am reminded of several things. First,
we have a lot to be Thankful for as we
live in a country where free elections
are held and we have a chance to participate in those elections. We can
choose who will lead us and what will
be done on our behalf. There are many
nations around the world where there
is no chance of voicing your opinion in
any way without serious repercussions. Thank God we have the chance
to have a say. So, that means, if you
haven't voted yet, Please Vote ASAP!
Secondly, no matter how corrupt or
how much disdain we may have for the
candidates or the system, as people of
faith, we have a higher authority that
we follow. It is the God of all Creation!
It is the God of Redemption! It is the
God of Sustaining all that is before us!
No matter how much credence and
authority we may give to our system,
trusted people or a government or society, the truth is that we cannot count
on those things to give us true security as much as we can count on our
God. Our God has proven, since the
beginning of the world, that God loves
us unconditionally, that God will not
desert us, that God will always work
to give us what we most need. All
through the Bible, Old and New Testament, God has proven that. But, even
in our lives, we can see, feel and sense
the power of a God who will always
work for our best. Be thankful this
month for the gift of such a Grace
filled God such as ours!
Thirdly, we are reminded that God
works in our world, even through government. 2 Timothy 2:1-4 says, "First
of all, then, I urge that supplications,
prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and
all who are in high positions, that we may
lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and
respectful in every way. This is good, and
it is acceptable in the sight of God our
Savior, who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the know-ledge of the
truth." Think about these words.
who is active in our lives and who loves us
unconditionally. All of that becomes so
much easier in a country like the United States of America where we have so
many freedoms that I'm afraid we take
them for granted. Let us rejoice for our
Election System that gives us that opportunity. Let us rejoice even more for
the God who works in and through and

It also means that, from God's perspective, that it is good and acceptable in
the sight of God so all may have a
chance to learn about the power, grace
and love of a relationship with our God.
If we want to know the "TRUTH" of all
that life has given us, we must be connected to the giver of that "TRUTH"our Lord God! I don't go to a doctor to
fix my car. I don't go to an accountant
to fix a leaky sink. I don't go to my wife
to tell me the details of the latest sports
news. Sorry, I digressed on that last
one, too much with all the football and
World Series going on.
If I want to know the "TRUTH" about
the world that I live in for the very basics of our lives, then I need to go to
the Creator of that world- my God
through Jesus, the Savior, and the Holy
Spirit! I need to do that with prayer,
study, worship, small Life Groups, fasting, Sacraments, devotional time, mission, service and through the sharing
of my faith in both word and action.
Whether your candidate or issues
passed or not, we have a lot to be
thankful for because we serve a God

The Power of
Prayer
“Prayer does not equip us
for greater works – prayer
is the greater work.”
Oswald Chambers
If there was ever a time
our world needed prayer,
it is now. We experienced
prayer stations last month,
but we also have a weekly prayer group
that meets Thursday mornings from 9-10
am at church. Won’t you consider joining
us as we praise God for Who He is and lift
up concerns for our church, our country and
the world?
Prayer opens the gates of heaven and ushers us into the presence of Jesus, bringing
peace, hope, encouragement and blessings.
If you have questions, please contact Andrea Nelson at [email protected] or 385244-1684.
CUMC is serving as a Collection Center for the Ogden community during the week of November 14th thru 21th. Volunteers are needed to help
with a variety of tasks. Signup sheet will be available beginning November 6th.
Decorated shoeboxes to fill and pamphlets are also available. Contact for information is Susan Wagner 801-775-0658.
Tornado Hits- Now What?
When the tornado hit the Washington Terrace, Riverdale and South Ogden
area on September 22nd, it changed many lives. There were up to 18
homes that were uninhabitable. There were many others who had damage
but were still able to live there. There were thousands who went without
power. What's gone on since then?
Gary has been working with a group to help respond to the needs of those
who, though insured, may not have been fully insured or those whose deductable was way too high for them to afford. There was a meeting on October 27th to find out how many were still in need and determine ways to
help respond to those needs.
As part of CUMC, if you have a desire to help those who were hurt by this
damage, please contact Gary and find out how you can help the least, last
and lost around our neighborhood!
Giving Tree & Your Community Connection (YCC)
This Christmas season CUMC will be partnering with YCC in Ogden for the 2016
Giving Tree. We will be sponsoring 17 children to provide Christmas gifts too.
Tags with information will be available Sunday, November 20th & 27th in the fellowship hall. All gifts need to be returned by Sunday, December 4th.
CUMC members can sponsor a child or children, share a sponsorship with another
CUMC family or donate cash towards a sponsorship. The gifts don’t need to be
wrapped. The parents of the children wrap the presents as part of the giving process. Donations of gift bags, tape, tags and bows are appreciated.
Thank you for your support of CUMC’s Giving Tree. If you have questions or would
like to help with delivery of the items to YCC please call
Lara Bartol at 801-289-6732 or email at

“BLUE CHRISTMAS” SERVICE
December 4th, @ 6:30 pm
Blue? Yes, blue as in the blues. As in
"I am feeling blue." Not everyone is
up and cheery for the Christmas
holidays. Dealing with the death of
a loved one, facing life after divorce
or separation, coping with the loss
of a job, living with cancer or some
other dis-ease that puts a question
mark over the future, and a number of other human situations make
parties and joviality painful for many
people in our congregations and
communities. If you or someone
you know is struggling this holiday
season join us!!!
"To honor our veterans and active
duty armed forces, we are looking
for pictures from any new church
family members that are veterans or
are currently serving in the armed
forces. You may either drop off a
photo in my box or email me at
[email protected].
The deadline to receive pictures will
be November 6 so that there is time
to edit the power point. We will be
presenting our "Tribute to the Armed
Forces" and "An Honor to Serve" November 13.
Thank you for your help.
Harmoniously, Deb Tjoland"
We are in need of individuals or families to light the candles on the
wreath each Sunday during Advent, for Christmas Eve services and
Christmas Day. This will involve short readings also. On Christmas
Eve need children or adults to bring in Baby Jesus and place him in
the manger. There is a sign up sheet in the Narthex for these special honors or talk to Becky Mecham (801) 479-9154.
BECOMES A REALITY FOR CUMC
As many of you know, CUMC will be a host church for families in need as part of the Family Promise program.
This program will begin as early as February or March 2017. CUMC is one of seven churches in the Ogden area who
will be hosting these families. While Mormon churches are not allowed to host families in their facilities, some LDS
Wards have volunteered to help in other ways. In the future, we will be asking you to help serve these families in a variety of ways. What an exciting way to be the hands and feet of Jesus!
Right now, we are in need of certain items that the congregation can help us collect. Family Promise provides beds and
other items for up to 14 individuals. Each host church is asked to provide the following items:
sheets ~ washable blankets ~ pillowcases ~ mattress pads ~ towels ~ washcloths
There are other supplies that will be needed as we get closer to hosting our first family(ies) and we will be in contact
with the congregation as needed. We would like to collect these items by Saturday, November 19 at our annual Thanksgiving dinner. Monetary donations are also welcome. Questions may be directed to Dave Ekstrom, Gary Haddock or Gail Brown.

"Life" Groups are starting- Sign up, now!
Starting in November, there will be new
small Life Groups starting. What is a Life
Group? It is a small group that has its
primary focus to be the transformation of
our lives to being stronger followers of
Jesus, the Christ. It focuses on how we
have grown over the past week and how
we can be growing over the next week to
come.
It is different from a class because a
class will focus on learning something
so we can know something we didn't
know before. A Life Group will focus on
moving us from wherever we are in our
lives spiritually right now toward the next
step in our spiritual maturity. In doing
this, it will encourage us, strengthen us,
give us a fellowship of support and care
and help remind us that our spiritual
journey is the only thing that will live for
all eternity. Everything else in this world
will be gone when we die. Our spiritual
relationship with God through Christ is
about forever! That is the only thing that
is about forever and because it is about
forever, it is what makes the difference
between just existing in this world and
truly "thriving" as the person God created you to be.
We have some groups set up already
and those can be joined by contacting
the leaders. In the foyer on the table we
will have a list of the different Life
Groups, their facilitators, the days and
times, as well as contact information to
find out more or to sign up to attend.
As I've been talking about these in the
sermon series called, "Revival", these
Life Groups are the best way for us to
growing through our times of struggle,
learning in our times of routines and
connecting with our Lord God in the
most efficient and powerful ways. John
Wesley and the Methodist movement
was all about Life Groups. If you want to
be growing as a Christian, then pray
about these Life Groups. Then, after you
pray, sign up! If you become involved
with them with sincerity and give them
time and effort, I guarantee you they will
help change your lives. God bless you
and don't miss out on this opportunity to
become more of the Christian that I know
you all want to be!
9:00 a.m. class for 3 year-olds – 5th Grade
In November, we begin Unit 3 of our Fall Quarter in the Deep
Blue curriculum. Our theme this month is “God Provides”. We
are in the book of Exodus for the first three weeks. In our first
lesson, we will learn that the Israelites were free from their Egyptian servitude, but not yet ready to be God’s people. Entry into
the Promised Land was at least a generation away. To mold the
people into God’s people, God led them on a round-about journey.
The terrain was inhospitable, the soil sandy. There was little vegetation for the livestock, or
the people, and water was scarce. When times got tough, God’s people began to complain. Just
as God had heard their cries and rescued them from slavery in Egypt, God again responded to
their complaints. God provided for their needs, sending quail in the evening and manna in the
morning. He provided just what they needed and no more.
In our second week, we still see the Israelites wandering in the wilderness and God continuing to provide for them. God finally leads the people to the base of Mount Sinai, where God
and the people renewed the covenant that had begun many generations before with Abraham and Sarah. This new covenant was outlined in ten life-giving laws. We call these laws
the Ten Commandments. Our children will learn that the Ten Commandments still are a
vital part of our faith today. They are the foundation for our obedience to God; they describe the basics of how to live a life in community.
Our third lesson in November is about a house for God. The Israelites spent forty years
wandering in the wilderness of the Sinai Peninsula. During this time, following God’s directions, the Israelites built the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle had all of the equipment of a permanent temple, but it was designed to be mobile. The Tabernacle served as a place the Israelites
could go and worship God. It also served as a visible reminder of God’s constant presence.
After hearing about Moses and the Israelites for several weeks, on November 27th, we move
out of the Book of Exodus and hear from the prophet Isaiah. Seven hundred years before
Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold of a time of extensive peace. God promises us
peace as we are in relationship with Him. God promises us, as faithful people, the opportunity to experience a new life through God’s love. What a wonderful promise to learn
about on this first day of Advent as we begin to explore and anticipate the birth of Jesus.
Here is our schedule if you would like to follow along with our children:
November 6 – In the Wilderness (Exodus 15:22 – 17:7)
November 13 – Ten Commandments (Exodus 19:1 – 20:21)
November 20 – A House for God (Exodus 25 – 31:15 and 35:4 – 40:38)
November 27 – The Peaceable Kingdom (Isaiah 11:6-9)
We hope to see your children in Sunday School!
The statistics are scary.
According to the Pew
Research Center, 59 percent
of young people ages
eighteen to twenty-nine
with a Christian background have dropped out of church. It is estimated that eight million young adults will leave the
church before their thirtieth birthday. Is church as we know it in mainline denominations headed for
extinction? What makes religion relevant to an increasingly secular society?
On November 7th we begin a new book by award-winning contemporary writer and blogger Rachel
Held Evans. Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church explores those questions through the context of seven sacraments of the church, and what those sacraments tell us about
ourselves and our relationship to church and to God.
We meet Monday evenings from 6:00-7:00 P.M. in the Wesley Room. Books will be available the
first night of class. We’d love to have you join us!
The Spiritual Growth Committee is happy to present “Not
Free Book!!! Who
I Imagined – Surprised By a Loving God” by Margot Star
buck as our FREE RESOURCE for the month of November! What if
God accepts us exactly as we are? Through real-life stories filled
with wit, humor, and vulnerability, Starbuck explores the unbounded love of
our Creator, revealing a God who's open, kind, and gracious. Let go of the feeling
that you never quite measure up and embrace the liberating message that your heavenly Father
cherishes you! Pick up your FREE copy on the table in the lobby while they last!

Adult Sunday School
10:30 AM-12:00 PM
Upper Room
The Adult Sunday School class continues its
study on the book “Crucible” by Phil Tuttle!
David, Israel's shepherd king, faced critical
choices throughout his life, and we can learn a
lot from how he handled them. In Crucible, we
witness how faith, trust, fear, truth, despair,
sacrifice, and humility refined David and drew
him closer to the heart of God. We learn that
God will use the choices we make to transform
us into people after His own heart-and shape
our lives forever. We encourage you to come
and be a part of the discussion as we explore
these topics! And then………….ADVENT
begins on November 27th! We will be offering
a 4 week Advent study that you won’t want to
miss! Please join us Sunday morning at
10:45am in the Upper Room!
Beginning January 8th, Dennis and Sue
Barrett will present a class entitled America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America
based on the book by Jim Wallis! We are
excited to explore this contemporary topic
and encourage everyone to participate in
this class. Offering a prophetic and deeply
personal call to overcome the racism that is
so ingrained in America, Jim Wallis speaks
candidly to Christians, urging them to cross
a new bridge toward justice and healing.
Probing yet positive, biblically rooted yet
highly practical, America's Original Sin
shows believers how to work together to
lead a grassroots change. This 6 week class
will be offered on Sunday mornings from
10:30am to noon in the Upper Room. Books
will be made available and a sign-up sheet
for the book is on the table in the lobby. Please plan on joining us for this important discussion!
