Woodman Point Attadale / Pt Walter Kite Locations 2011/12 Guidelines to Perth & Surrounds WAKSA encourages all kiters to keep out of all dune areas. Please access Beach 3 by walking along beach front, not through dunes. This area is well known for car break-ins. Show appropriate caution with your car & belongings. Beach 1 u Always seek local advice on launch/landing due to the small launch/landing zone and narrow beach. u Please refrain from coming right up to the corner of the limestone wall to turn so other kiters can get off the beach quickly. u Always roll up lines if kite is not being used u Kiters are encouraged to clear the beach and kite on a SE direction. u Beginners are encouraged to launch/land or body drag east of the main launch/landing zone. Beach 2 u SW wind is on shore at this location. u Show appropriate consideration to windsurfers and other beach users at this location Attadale u Kiting at Attadale is only possible in E or NE winds. Due to a small and difficult launch/landing area, WAKSA advises the spot is not suited to beginner kiters. u Do not launch or land on the foreshore inside the fenced off area - this is a Dep’t of Environment & Conservation bird sanctuary. (Exclusion zone 1) u Please do not kite in or through the waters adjacent to the bird sanctuary. u Launch/landing area is the small beach to the left (west) of the fenced off area. u This area is also popular with dog owners and pedestrians. Please show appropriate caution when launching & landing. Point Walter u Point Walter is well known for sharp rocks, only visible at low tide. Keep clear of the area marked to minimise risk of injury or damage to boards. u Two boat launching ramps operate to the east of the jetty - WAKSA encourages kiters to keep clear of this area (see diagram - Exclusion zone 2) u Jet ski’s and water skiing takes place nearby – show appropriate caution near PWC’s and motor boats. u Large numbers of boats including commercial vessels operate in the channel each side of the Point Walter sand bar - ensure you know the correct ‘right of way’ rules when kiting near the channels. Beach 3 uWe strongly advise this spot is suitable for advanced kiters only. u SW wind is off-shore at this location – kiters must be able to self rescue if kiting at Beach 3. u Keep clear of jetty and pumping station. u Please respect exclusion zone north of pumping station – local council restrictions in place. u Don’t gybe in front of kiters heading in towards the beach/no short tacks please follow circuit direction as per diagram above to allow everyone to perform their tricks. Cottesloe u Due to local government regulations (at this location), all kiters at ‘Dutch Inn’ are required to have appropriate public liability insurance. WAKSA membership provides sufficient insurance to meet this requirement. u Exclusion Zone 1: Due to the large number of swimmers and walkers along this beach, launch/landing is prohibited – please respect exclusion zone. u Exclusion Zone 2: Due to the large number of swimmers in this area, kiters are strongly encouraged to remain at least 200m offshore. u Kiters doing downwinders north of Swanbourne should be aware of the rifle range – if red flags are up along the beach, the range is in use. Kiters are advised to show appropriate caution. Welcome to the first edition of the WA Kite Surfing Association’s Guidelines to Perth & Surrounds Kite Locations 2011/12. The Guidelines are here to assist West Australian, interstate and international kiters keep our beaches open for kite surfing. The information contained in each location Guideline is based on historical “do’s and don’ts” and feedback from local and regular kiters at popular locations around Perth. Whilst we encourage all kiters to comply with these Guidelines, they are not a rule book and are fluid enough to be amended as necessary in the future. As kiters, we have an obligation to do our best to keep local beaches open for kite surfing. WAKSA urges all kiters to kite safely and responsibly at all times. Please refer to the CLEAR advice below for additional information. Ultimately we are responsible for minimising the risk to ourselves, and others, which will help protect the future of this great sport, be very CLEAR about your responsibilities. u Conditions - Wind strength Wind direction Always keep downwind area well clear Waves, tides & currents Consider possible changes u Look - Before you launch, land, jump, jibe, etc u Equipment - u Attitude Always seek and listen to local advice Don’t exceed your limitations Use judgement to prevent situations, not rely on skill to try and get out of it u Respect - Always pre-flight check Use a kite leash Use a quick release on anything you hook into Practise using your safety systems regularly so that it becomes instinctive Never exceed manufacturers specifications Others - be considerate and courteous to all other water and beach users The law Fellow kiters - follow right of way rules The environment WAKSA encourages all kiters to put name and contact details on kites and boards. Do not launch/land or pump up/deflate kite in or near this area including on the grassed area. Fines apply. u Please observe correct right of way rules throughout the mixed use area. u Learners are encouraged to kite at the northern section of the beach. u Exclusion Zone 2: Predominantly a swimming area – kiters are encouraged to keep clear of this area. Leighton Beach Melville Beach u No kiting inside the three yellow buoys, only launch and land inside this area. u No flying kites over the grass or road, especially when walking back up wind. u All learners and lessons to locate down wind of the large white gum tree. u Keep all gear off the cycle path. u Only park in designated areas i.e. not on the grass verge. If the main road is full, park up a side street. u No kiting in onshore (westerly) winds. u Do not launch or land your kite North of the Dog Beach signs. u Accommodate and respect other beach users, Melville is a shared public resource. Our continued access is a negotiated privilege, not a right. u Do not kite within 100m of the Fremantle SLSC flagged area. Mullaloo Beach u Kite exclusion zones commenced 1st December 2010. u DO NOT KITE THROUGH EITHER EXCLUSION ZONE u Exclusion zone 1 runs for 1.5km’s along Mullaloo beach, commencing 889m SOUTH of the Mullaloo SLSC, and finishes 611m NORTH of the Club and extends 200m offshore. u Exclusion zone 2 commences 400m SOUTH of the West View Boulevard car park beach access path and finishes 300m NORTH of the car park and extends 200m offshore. u The designated launch/ landing zone is between these exclusion zones (see map for details). u Please be aware of other beach users, including people walking or swimming in this area. u Do not kite in, near or through surf club flagged areas. u Kiters are encouraged to launch in the area shown: u Please be aware of other beach users, including people walking or swimming in this area. Pelican Point Safety Bay Yacht Club/The Pond City Beach/Floreat: u A kite school operates adjacent to the yacht club. Experienced kiters should maintain a safe distance from learners u Kiters are requested to move at least 50m north of the Floreat groyne to launch/land their kites – as per diagram. u Kiters are expected to follow established guidelines at The Pond. Safety Bay - Shoalwater/Penguin Island u A kite school operates downwind of the ferry jetty. Experienced kiters should maintain a safe distance from learners. u Rig, launch & land downwind of the school. u Penguin Island attracts a large number of tourists – please maintain appropriate safe distances from all other beach users. u Due to the restricted launch/landing area beginner kiters are encouraged not to kite at this location u DO NOT leave lines or kites on the bike path - the path is regularly used by both pedestrians and cyclists. Please be aware of non-kiters in the area. u Set up & rig kites on the grassed area only. u Dep’t of Environment & Conservation has declared the fenced off area as ‘out of bounds’ due to migratory bird nesting in the reserve. DO NOT launch or land in the fenced off area u Yellow buoys on the water mark the boundary of the DEC reserve. DO NOT kite inside this area. u Shallow water in certain areas – take appropriate care. Scarborough / City Beach u Keep a safe distance from people wading across the sand bar to Penguin Island. u Due to the presence of bird nesting sites please do not kite in/near areas adjacent to Penguin & Seal Islands as marked. u Do not kite between the groynes at City Beach and do not kite in or through the surf club area at Floreat (marked by white buoys) offshore in front of the club house. u The launch area at Floreat is north of the surf club. Brighton/Scarborough: u Launch/landing area at Brighton/Scarborough is on the beach to the south of the access path adjacent to the Brighton beach kiosk. u Don’t launch and land on the grassed area near the Brighton kiosk and do not walk up or down the access path with your kite in the air. u Kiters are encouraged not to kite north of the Brighton pathway. u Follow right of way rules at all times. u Keep clear of all flagged areas and swimmers. Stay clear of flagged areas when Lifesavers are training.
