Factors Controlling Respiration
Concepts:
I
Studies on factors controlling respiration are important in presenting fruits, vegetables
and other food items etc.
Respiration can occur under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
In the obsence of oxygen less amount of A.T.P. is produced.
The temperature at which the rate of respiration is maximum is called optimal
temperature.
At low temperature enzymes are not active and therefore the rate of respiration will be
very low.
At high temperature enzymes becames inactive. Therefore rate of respiration also
decreased at high temperature.
Heat energy is liberated during respiration.

1 Mark Questions
What are the factors Controlling respiration?
Oxygen, enzymes and temperature are the factors controlling respiration.
2.
A.
What is optimum temperature?
The temperature at which the rate of respiration is maximum is called optimum
temperature.
3.
A.
Where do we see respiration in absence of oxygen?
In micro organisms like yeast, and bacteria, respiration takes place in the absence of
oxygen. This type of respiration is called anaerobic respiration.

How can you show that heat is liberated during respiration?
Aim: To show that heat is released during respiration.
Apparation: Two-Thermos flasks; Two thermometers, two rubber one hold corks,
germinating seeds dry seeds, vaseline/greece.
Procedure: Take two thermos flasks and put some germinating seeds in flask and
dry seeds in another flask. Now take two thermometers and insert them in each
flask with the help of one hold rubber cork as shown in the figer. Apply greece or
vaseline at the mouth of the thermoflask which prevent the leakage of air. Now keep
the whole apparation aside with out disturbance. Now noted the initial temperature
in both thermo metres.
Observation: After 5 or 6 hours you can observe that the flask which contain
germinating seeds temperature is increased in thermometer and the flask which
contain dry seeds temperature is remains constant.
This is because in germinating seeds respiration occurs rapidly During Respiration

heat is released due to that temperature is increases in thermometer.
Dry seed respiration donot occurs hence temperature is remains constant.
Thus we can prove that heat is released during respiration.
