Bridging the Evidence Gap A public lecture presented by: Dr. Rob Sanson-Fisher Laureate Professor of Public Health and Medicine, and Director of the Health Behaviour Research Centre at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia Thursday 2 June, 2011 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Sunlife Auditorium: LHS – 1621 Topic Overview: There is growing evidence that there is a gap between what constitutes best-evidence practice and its application in the practice and policy settings. Reducing this evidence/practice gap represents an important way in which we can improve health outcomes for our communities. The important role which public health could play in this process will be discussed. Biography: Rob Sanson-Fisher’s work combines behavioural and public health approaches to health promotion, health service evaluation and cancer control. Sanson-Fisher played a significant role in establishing the Behavioural Science in Relation to Medicine Group at the University of Newcastle; was the initiator of the Hunter Centre for Health Advancement; and was an inaugural Director of the New South Wales Cancer Education Research Program, which has been recognized as a WHO Centre of Excellence. Sanson-Fisher was also the inaugural director of the Commonwealths National Cancer Control Initiative. He received an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Waterloo and became a Laureate Professor at the University of Newcastle in 2008. In 2009, he was awarded an Order of Australia. Currently, Sanson-Fisher is collaborating with scientists at the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact, on research identifying the unmet needs of cancer survivors. ALL ARE WELCOME
