Laureate Professor of Public Health and Medicine, and Director of the Health
Behaviour Research Centre at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales,
Australia
Thursday 2 June, 2011 
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Sunlife Auditorium: LHS – 1621
Topic Overview: There is growing evidence that there is a gap
between what constitutes best-evidence practice and its application
in the practice and policy settings. Reducing this evidence/practice
gap represents an important way in which we can improve health
outcomes for our communities. The important role which public
health could play in this process will be discussed.
Biography: Rob Sanson-Fisher’s work combines behavioural and public health
approaches to health promotion, health service evaluation and cancer control.
Sanson-Fisher played a significant role in establishing the Behavioural Science in
Relation to Medicine Group at the University of Newcastle; was the initiator of the
Hunter Centre for Health Advancement; and was an inaugural Director of the New
South Wales Cancer Education Research Program, which has been recognized as a
WHO Centre of Excellence. Sanson-Fisher was also the inaugural director of the
Commonwealths National Cancer Control Initiative. He received an honorary
Doctorate of Science from the University of Waterloo and became a Laureate
Professor at the University of Newcastle in 2008. In 2009, he was awarded an Order of
