Hag Al Layla
Emirati Tradition of Giving
Hag Al Layla marks the mid of
Shaba’an, the 8th month in the lunar
calendar, which is also the month
directly preceding Ramadan. In the
UAE, this day is marked with festive
activities for children, which include
distributing candies and goodies to
other children and adults alike. In the
UAE, you can find local Emirati
children wearing traditional clothes,
and sharing bags of candy with family,
friends, and those who are less
fortunate. They also use the time to
learn more about local traditions, play
traditional games, with many “Hag Al
Layla” tents set up around the city
where children can enjoy traditional
games and activities.

Tradition begins with Islam
The tradition was thought to have started as a marking of this special day in Islam.
It is a day when many muslims spend the eve of the 15th day in prayers of thankfulness and supplication, and preparation for the month of Ramadan. Traditions
around this day vary thoughout the arab world, and it is known as Laylatul
Bara’ah which means the night of assignment, or night of deliverance. It is
thought that it is a day when the Lord forgives, and looks at his creation with
mercy.

To experience local traditions and culture, join us for an Iftar evening in the month
of July this Ramadan. During this month, the SMCCU hosts traditional Iftars
which begins at sunset. It is followed by a stroll through the beautiful Al Fahidi
