The Midcounties Co-operative Food store in Walsall town centre forms part of a multi-million pound project funded and developed by Walsall Council to help revamp the St Matthews Quarter area of the town centre and attract further investment. The Walsall store will host the Society’s first Coffee Republic franchise, which has created its first fair-trade coffee specifically for the partnership, and will offer town centre users a convenient place to do their weekly shopping as well as everyday essentials. Walsall Council Leader Mike Bird and Mrs Shaw, Ex-President and lifelong member of Midcounties Co-operative cut the ribbon to the new 7,000 sq. ft. store to mark its grand opening and children from Charles Cody School joined in the celebrations and were given a tour of the store ahead of the official launch on Friday 8th January. Colleagues also took the opportunity to present a £5,000 cheque to St. Giles Walsall Hospice, which provides specialist care and support to people with life threatening illnesses. The funds were raised collaboratively across The Midcounties Co-operative sites in Walsall last year. Council News As a part of The Midcounties Co-operative’s commitment to providing a positive impact to the local community, the store will launch Free Fruit Friday to encourage healthy eating among young people. The campaign will see any child that visits the store in a school uniform receive a free apple or banana for the month after opening. Oliver Holden, Store Manager at The Midcounties Co-operative Food in Walsall, said: “We’re committed to investing in Walsall and have identified a demand for a convenience store in the town centre. We’re proud to be the first store to partner with Coffee Republic and be involved with such an exciting project to refresh the customer offerings in the area. “We’re pleased to say that the store has created 30 new jobs, and it was great to welcome along Walsall councillors and children from local schools to help us celebrate the occasion.” Walsall Council leader Mike Bird, said: “I’m delighted to welcome The Midcounties Co-operative’s investment in Walsall once again. The food store will give shoppers an alternative to the offer already available in the town centre. “The redevelopment of this part of the Old Square Shopping Centre has been a huge investment by the Council and a great boost to the town. Primark is a real success – footfall in the area has risen significantly - and I’m delighted to see The Midcounties Co-operative adding another piece of the jigsaw to the regeneration of our town.” Deputy Leader, Councillor Adrian Andrew added: “It’s excellent news. We have delivered millions of pounds of investment in Walsall town centre and scores of jobs created with many more projects in the pipeline. This shows that Walsall town centre is a place to invest in and do business and I’d like to thank both The Midcounties Co-operative and Primark for showing faith in our town and contributing to its success.” Back to contents Junction 10 – Public Consultation Walsall Council is working with Highways England to widen the roundabout and carry out improvements to the local road network at M6 Junction 10. A consultation for the public to comment on the design options for the junction began Friday 4 December and will last until 24 January 2016. This requirement applies to anyone employed by, or working on behalf of, Walsall Council. The Council currently uses an online training tool, to host a range of training courses including ‘Protecting Information Levels 1 and 2’. Protecting Information Level 1 provides staff with the key things they need to know about what information should be protected and how they can should do this in their day to day working environments. It also includes a short assessment to test and record understanding. Protecting Information Level 2 is aimed at those handling more sensitive information and/ or those with increased levels of responsibility, and covers how to make decisions about sharing information and the corporate Information Governance structure. This will be launched early in 2016. Since launching the training in 2012, the content has been updated based on user feedback and developments in the world of Information Governance. Version 3 of the Protecting Information Level 1 training is now available on eCentral. Whilst most staff will have successfully completed the training once before, if it is 2 years or more since you last completed level 1 of the training, you must now go online and complete the revised Protecting Information Level 1 V.3. This will ensure that your learning is up to date and you are better able to protect and use the information you need to do your job. You can check your learning record and when you completed training by accessing People Gateway. Details of how to do this are contained in this link When you login to the eCentral, you will find the revised Protecting Information courses listed under ‘My Course Progress’. Agency Staff Please note all agency staff also need to complete this training. Agency staff will not have a Walsall Council employee number, and thus will not be registered / enrolled on the system. Therefore if you have agency staff who are working for the Council, you will need to provide the following details: name, email address and area of work where these staff work within the council, for them to be added to the system to enable them to complete the training. Please send the details of agency staff to: [email protected] or call 01922 655678. Training News On 31st December 2015, the current version of the Protecting Information Level 1 (V.2) is going to be withdrawn. Therefore if you have already started, but not completed, this version you will need to refer to the instructions below: What you need to do now? If you are part way through level 1 then you should complete this training, including the assessment, before the 31st December 2015. If you do not complete Version 2 of the course before the new version of the training is released then your progress to date will be lost and you will have to start the training again using Version 3 when launched. If you have completed Level 1 of your training ( version 1 or 2 ), but you are still required to do Level 2, then you are advised to complete level 2 as soon as possible. Your pass for Level 1 will still stand. The fraudsters usually impersonate a senior officer of the council who it appears instructs an officer from the finance department to urgently transfer funds or to make a payment which bypasses normal procedures. In reality, the fraudster has spoofed or hacked into the email address of the officer. If the request is not independently verified, there is a risk that funds will be paid directly in to the criminal’s bank account. Please treat with caution any unexpected emails that request urgent bank transfers or payments, even if the message appears to have originated from within the council. If an unexpected urgent payment request is received, the following actions are recommended: Contact the sender directly to confirm that they did send the instruction. For example, reply to the sender in a fresh email – do not simply click reply to the original message, as that would be returned only to the fraudster. Staff News Similarly, do not use any telephone numbers or other contact details quoted on the email itself – refer instead to alternative sources such as the council’s internal telephone directory. Hovering your cursor over the ‘from’ field in the email will tell you the real address that the message has originated from. This might reveal, for example, a Hotmail or Gmail account, as opposed to one of the councils email addresses. To help combat this type of fraud, use strong passwords for access to e-mail accounts which should include a mixture of uppercase letters, numbers and specific characters. If you receive any emails that impersonate council officers and which ask for electronic payments to be initiated, please inform Ian Tuft Lead Financial Admin & Support; [email protected] extension 2378. Please think twice about authorising transfers and payments out and please look at the beneficiary when considering if a payment is genuine. Jan Vanriet, The Music Boy Laura Lancaster Friends, family and colleagues welcome. Both exhibitions will be on display from the 29 January – 8 May 2016. Exhibitions Jan Vanriet The Music Boy 29 January – 8 May 2016 Events Image credit: Jan Vanriet, The Music Boy, Black, 2013, Courtesy of the artist and Roberto Polo Gallery, Brussels Jan Vanriet is a hugely influential painter and poet from Belgium. He has exhibited widely across the world, representing his country in the biennials of Sao Paolo, Venice and Seoul yet this is his first exhibition in the UK. Much of his work is rooted in his family history. His parents met in the Mauthausen concentration camp and their stories and memories of the Second World War and its aftermath continues to influence his paintings. Themes of love, loss, identity, destiny and disappearance pervade his work. Yet there is also an inherent playfulness and lightness of touch and an evident mastery of the medium of paint. The exhibition brings 30 paintings. The title refers to The Music Boy, a polyptych of four paintings depicting his grandmother and uncle - his mother's twin brother - playing accordion as a boy before the war. Jan Vanriet was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1948. He lives and works in Antwerp. Laura Lancaster 29 January – 8 May 2016 Events Image credit: Laura Lancaster, Threshold, 2015, oil on linen, 240x480cm, Courtesy of the artist and Workplace Gallery. Laura Lancaster is a painter who draws inspiration from forgotten and discarded photographs and home movies, found in flea markets, charity shops and through ebay. Once precious and significant to someone, they are now detached from their original contexts and instead, they become animated through Laura's luscious, gestural and expressive application of paint. These lost and dislocated souls, caught in the ambiguous space between figuration and abstraction, compel us to reflect on time, memory and loss. This exhibition will bring together a range of works by the artist including a new series of diptychs which are drawn from the very first and last frames of found super 8mm home movies. With the inclusion of sprocket holes and marks on the film, the paintings are portraits of the medium of film as much as their subject matter. The juxtaposition of the first and last frames implies the passing of time through the lost narrative that bind these moments together. In Conversation Saturday 12 March, 2pm Join the artist for a tour of the exhibition. Free, all welcome. Collection Exhibitions Epstein’s Rock Drill Transformed by War Until 24 January 2016 Floors 1 and 2 Events Image credit: Jacob Epstein with Torso in Metal from Rock Drill, unknown photographer, c. 1952, Epstein Archive, The New Art Gallery Walsall Rock Drill (c.1913-15) is Epstein’s most radical and celebrated sculpture, often described as ‘the best thing he has ever done’. The totemic sculpture represents ‘a dramatic, revolutionary moment when sculpture in Britain first became uncompromisingly modern.’ However between the end of 1915 and the beginning of 1916 Epstein destroyed the original Rock Drill, discarding the drill and mutilating the figure, to form the truncated Torso in Metal from Rock Drill (c.1915-16). Almost sixty years after its destruction, Kathleen Garman agreed to a reconstruction of her late husband’s iconic sculpture following proposals that ‘if someone were to reconstruct the original version of Rock Drill it could substantially alter the history of the modern movement.’ Marking the centenary of Epstein’s dismantling of Rock Drill, and bringing together works from the collections of Tate, The British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Birmingham Museums Trust, this exhibition reveals how the sculpture’s un-making is as significant as its making.
