Teacher Instructions This game can also be played on geoboards. Students should have a basic understanding of ordered pairs before they play this game. Students should play the game in class a few times before they take the game home to teach a family member. Have students mark the locations of their ships on their location graph, following the instructions on the handout. Use a different colour for each ship. Then, record the ordered pairs on the location list. Students then find a partner and begin to play, taking turns guessing ordered pairs. Use a checkmark on the location graph to mark a hit and an x to mark a miss. Continue playing until one partner is successful in “sinking” all the ships. The students’ task is to then bring the game home and teach a family member how to play it. This extension allows the student: Practise communicating and explaining mathematical concepts Further practise mastering ordered pairs Problem-solving and strategizing activities Leadership opportunities at home Realization that math homework can be fun! The reflection sheet can be done as homework or completed in class the following day. Encourage students to share their experiences with the class. Coordinate Battleship Your task is to teach a family member how to play coordinate battleship using coordinate pairs, and play a game or two. Complete the reflection sheet when you are finished, using complete sentences and mathematical vocabulary. How to Play: Battleship – 5 points Carrier – 4 points Destroyer – 3 points Submarine – 2 points 1. Plot points on the grid below to represent your ships. Use a different colour for each ship. You can place your ships vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Be sure your opponent cannot see your board. 2. Record your ships’ coordinates on the Location List. Remember, horizontal 1st, vertical 2nd. 3. Take turns guessing opponent’s coordinates. If your opponent guesses a correct location for one of your ships’ coordinates, say ‘hit’, and record the hit on your Hit/Miss graph. Use a checkmark for a hit and an x for a miss. If your opponent does not guess a coordinate, say ‘miss’ and record 4. Record your guesses on the guess list and Guess graph, using checkmarks and x’s. 5. The object of the game is to sink all four of your opponent’s ships. What did you enjoy about this activity? 2. How did you explain the coordinate system to your family member? 3. What was easy or difficult about explaining the coordinate system to your family member? Why? 4. How did recording coordinates on the list and the graph help you? 5. Who won the game?
