WHY
Our mission is to develop products that are truly innovative and groundbreaking.
Products which address real problems; which exceed expectations; which are more
advanced, more effective than anything else available on the market.
Our goal in creating Continuum was to design a product that treats and transforms
damaged hair back to a virgin-like state—without the use of unnecessary
chemicals or additives that can cause buildup and other serious harms.
Our motivation came from experiencing the many
problems and limitations of current products available
on the market. These products claim to build bonds
and/or restructure hair—and many do. However, they do
not build the same type of bonds, the same number of
bonds, or the same quality of bonds as Continuum.
More importantly, a key problem with many of these
products is that they employ unnecessary, harmful
chemicals to create artificial bonding effects that can
leave buildup, which in turn diminishes the health and
appearance of hair over time. The use of these artificial
linking, patching, and bridging chemicals can limit
treatment effectiveness. The unfortunate result is the
stifling of a salon professional’s creativity and, thus, the
ability to service their client successfully.

Before the invention of Continuum, many salon professionals had restrictions on
how far their creativity could go and knew the physical limitations of
coloring/lightening all too well. Our low-tech competitors employ artificial bond
patching/linking chemicals that can create a potentially hazardous situation
wherein a salon professional is forced to "bump up the developer" during the
lightening process. Aside from increasing processing time, the act of bumping up
the developer can dramatically increase the risk of burning and damage to one’s
hair and scalp. We knew that through the use of biotechnology there was a better
solution—a safer, more effective solution.

This is how the Continuum technology works:
1. SUMMARY
Our method is simple: use biotechnology at the molecular level to make hair the best it can be, without the use of
harsh chemicals or oils that cause buildup and risk further long-term damage. By working deep within each strand
of hair using powerful elements, Continuum empowers hair to change dramatically and transform into a state
stronger and healthier than ever before. This process is known as “restructuring” and it is a revolutionary development
in hair care technology.
The types and number of bonds are very important. Continuum recreates and restructures hair by focusing on
numerous types of firm bonds throughout the entire cortical and cuticle regions to create the strongest overall
bonding effect possible, effectively restoring hair.
Each strand of hair is made up of many cortical fibers that are held together by countless bonds. These bonds
weaken and break over time due to coloring/lightening treatments, hot/cold/dry environments, normal aging, and,
of course, everyday styling.
To fully understand the power of Continuum, one must understand that not all bonds are created equal: some are
strong, others weak, while certain types of bonds exist in greater numbers than others. The ability to recreate multiple
types of firm, virgin-like bonds is the holy grail of restructuring. Unlike any other product on the market, Continuum has
the ability to do just this. Continuum empowers the recreation of the natural bond structure throughout the fibers of
the hair strands, pulling once distant and strained fibers together into a new, tight, strong, and smooth structure.
2. CHEMISTRY OF HAIR
Hair is composed of a fibrous protein, keratin,
which originates in the hair follicle. The hair is
made up of long amino acid chains joined
to each other by peptide bonds. This bond is
the backbone of all protein molecules. The
polypeptide chains are wound around each
other in the form of a helix. When the amino
acids combine, they form the keratin protein
of hair. Hair is made of two solid elements,
carbon and sulfur, and three gaseous
elements, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen.
The long, spiraling protein chains are placed
next to one another and are linked together
by four side bonds. The four side bonds are
the hydrogen bond, the salt bond, the
disulfide bond and Van der Waals Forces.

The first three types of bonds listed above contribute equally to overall hair strength. That is, each of these bonds
contribute around 1/3rd to overall hair strength. However, the numbers of each bonds significantly differ.
Ionic bonds are the most common in hair structure, followed by hydrogen bonds. Disulfide bonds are approximately less
than 10% of the total number of bonds in hair.
3. HOW IT WORKS
Human hair is prone to considerable damage due to several factors such as normal aging, exposure to certain
environmental conditions like sunlight and, most significantly, bleaching and other chemical processes. Anatomically, a
single hair strand can be represented as a rope made up of systematically arranged cortical fibers with an additional
protective cover called cuticles. Exposure to detrimental factors or bleaching processes causes weakening of hair
cuticles and loosening of cortical fibers; undesirable surface roughness and eventual breakage are the net effects.
Continuum is an innovative product created by combining unique molecules, precursors and activators to strengthen
the connections between cortical fibers. Regaining hair strength by rearranging cuticles ensures the maximum
protection and natural shine of the hair.
Continuum works on ionic and hydrogen bonds, the most
common bonds in hair. As shown in Figure 3, the number
of ionic and hydrogen bonds are the highest relative to
others. Continuum is effective in rebuilding the strength
and rearranging the bonds across the length of the hair
shaft.
Continuum was designed to restructure the hair strand, i.e.
rearrange hair cortical fibers and cuticles, by modulating
the chemical microenvironment of the internal hair
structure. It uses key ingredients belonging to the classes
of organic acid and amino acids. These ingredients
promote negatively and positively charged groups to
interact with oppositely-charged ionized groups within hair
cortical strands and on the cuticle surface. The end result
is new electrostatic (ionic) bond formations. Upon
modulating the internal chemical microenvironment of
hair, Continuum induces rearrangement of the cortical
fibers in a tightly packed mode and encloses the cuticle
layer firmly to give denser, shinier and stronger hair.
Cortical fibers are rearranged in a closer, tightly dense
fashion and step sizes of the cuticle layer are reduced.
Such reduction in distance between electronegative
atoms and hydrogen improves hydrogen bonding which
is very prominent in biological and protein molecules.
Continuum treatment increases the number of hydrogen
bonds by increasing the concentration of atoms with high
electronegativity, two key factors that can affect hydrogen
bonding. The strength of hydrogen bonding is also
improved due to: reduction in distance between the
hydrogen atom and electronegative atom; higher
electronegativity; and an increase in concurrent
neighboring electrostatic interactions.
Continuum Ro-Zen and Ro-Topia products use chemicals
that adsorb on the surface of the hair for conditioning
effects through two key mechanisms:

• Hydrophobic interactions: Cetearyl Alcohol, Amodimethicone, Cetyl Esters and Polysilicone-15.
• Electrostatic interactions (based on surface charge): Positively-charged chemical entities show affinity towards
negatively-charged hair surface, e.g. Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride.
Continuum also employs: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, a known extract to provide hair hydration and moisture; Keratin
and Hydrolyzed Keratin, sources of amino acids which provide supplementary hair conditioning.
The unique composition of Continuum and the technology used for delivery allow the bleaching process to take place
uninhibited, without compromising the integrity of the hair fiber. Continuum protects the cortical regions (macro and
microfibrils) and, consequently, the keratin chains and cuticles.
