ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES NEWSLETTER - MAY 2016 GIRLS SOCCER WINS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, NOW HOST NEW BERLIN WEST IN SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS Courtesy of John Steppe The New Berlin Eisenhower Lady Lions are Regional champions following their impressive 5-1 victory over the Greendale Lady Panthers. The Lions had a few promising runs early but those were negated by offsides penalties, owning only one shot on goal in the first fifteen minutes of action. However, sophomore Kayla Jedrzejewski put IKE on the new scoreboard with a goal in the 18th minute. Eisenhower head coach Nick Datka said regarding the impact Jedrzejewski’s goal had on the game, “It was a monkey off our shoulders.” Datka was not impressed with the team’s first half performance despite Jedrzejewski’s goal. “The first half wasn’t the greatest,” Datka said. “We played more defense than we wanted to but looked good in transition.” In the 65th minute, Jedrzejewski evaded Greendale keeper Adrianna Bratel to score her second goal of the game and give IKE some muchneeded insurance. “[Jedrzejewski’s] second goal was just as-- if not more-- important than the first goal,” Datka said. “[Greendale] put a lot of pressure on us.” When asked about her two-goal performance, Jedrzejewski attributed her success to “the energy we had as a team and the fact that we wanted to win the Regional Championship.” She continued, “Making my runs, calling for the ball, and being positive the whole time really helped the team.” In the 74th minute, fellow Eisenhower underclassman Izzy Kittson knocked in a goal off a solid pass from junior Emma Grellinger. A little over five minutes later, Kittson expanded Eisenhower’s lead to 4-0 with another goal. IKE added salt to Greendale’s wounds in the 85th minute as sophomore Grace DeRome took advantage of an excellent pass by junior Caila Bachmann to score her first goal of the playoffs. This is the most goals surrendered by Bratel, a UW-Parkside recruit, in over a year. “We were timing our runs better,” Datka said regarding the influx of second half offense. “We avoided those offsides calls that were killing us in the first half.” The Panthers narrowly dodged a shutout as Greendale sophomore Taylore DeLong chipped a shot over several Eisenhower defenders and keeper Ava Seifert for a goal. With this win, Eisenhower will host the rival New Berlin West Lady Vikings Thursday. The winner will face off against the winner of Waukesha West and Whitefish Bay with a trip to State on the line. Datka expects the Sectional Semifinal battle against West to be challenging, saying, “It’s going to be a physical game.” Jedrzejewski said, “We just have to really come out strong, see that 0-0 on the scoreboard, and keep pushing.” REGIONAL SEMIFINALS Eisenhower blanked South Milwaukee, 8-0, in a regional semifinal match on June 2 at home. The Lions used two goals and an assist by Jedrzejewski to roll to the win, taking a 3-0 lead at halftime. Emma Torres scored at 12 minutes, 59 seconds with an assist to Meghan McNerney, DeRome with an assist from Jedrzejewski scored at 21:45; and Kittson scored the first of her two goals off a pass from Grellinger at 32:27. Leading 3-0 at halftime, Eisenhower took off in the second half. At 51:45, Kittson scored her second goal off a pass from Torres. Then at 52:52 and 54:24 Jedrzejewski scored her first and second goals — unassisted — and Sarah Rolefson scored off DeRome's assist at 56:04. Jedrzejewski had her third unassisted goal at 61 minutes. EISENHOWER BOYS TENNIS WINS SUBSECTIONAL McCORMICK & LOOMER QUALIFY FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Courtesy of New Berlin NOW’s Tom Skibosh New Berlin Eisenhower advanced its entire team and won the subsectional with 24 points at Wauwatosa West on May 23. New Berlin West scored 2 points and no one advanced. Ashwin Sankrithi advanced to the sectionals in Flight 1 singles along with Kevin Nitzin Flight 2 singles, Mitchell Swingin Flight 3 singles and Pranay Vadapally in Flight 4 singles. On the doubles side Patrick McCormick/Xavier Loomer (Flight 1), Jared Lawton/Ben Schaefer(Flight 2) and Nick Schaefer/Kevin Dobrzynski(Flight 3) all moved on. Then in the sectional on May 25 at Tosa West, Nitz placed second in Flight 2, Swing finished third in Flight 3, Vadapally finished fourth in Flight 4 and Sankrithi lost his first match in Flight 1. In doubles, Nick Schaefer/ Dobrzynski finished third in Flight 3, Lawton/Ben Schaefer finished fourth in Flight 2 and McCormick/Loomer lost their first match in Flight 1. The top four finishers in Flight 1 and the top finisher in Flight 2 in singles and doubles at each sectional qualify for state. During the weekend, special qualifier were chosen for the State Championship Tournament. The New Berlin Eisenhower doubles team of senior Patrick McCormick and junior Xavier Loomer lost in the first round of the 2016 Boys Tennis State Individual Championships on June 2 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. McCormick and Loomer had a 19-6 regular-season record. They lost to Fond du Lac's duo of senior Matt Schneider and junior MoosaSyed (6-4, 6-3). Schneider/Syed were 24-7 in the regular season. BOYS TENNIS CLINCHES CONFERENCE TITLE Courtesy of New Berlin NOW’s Tom Skibosh New Berlin Eisenhower nipped Shorewood by a point, 41-40, and won the Woodland Conference Tennis Championship on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 17 and 18, co-hosted by Greendale and Greenfield. Whitnall finished third with 31 points, and Greendale was fourth with 28 points, as it was a two-team race. "I am so proud of the team for achieving this title," coach Mike Jenders said. "This is the best boys team I have coached at Ike, a great group that has worked very hard to get to this position. Shorewood was a very even match for us, and the tournament really came down to a few key matches. Kevin (Nitz) and Mitchell (Swing) played awesome tennis for us, and Patrick (McCormick) and Xavier (Loomer) had a little revenge over the Shorewood team that beat them on Monday." The results of the individual matches follow. Eisenhower's No. 2 singles Kevin Nitz beat Mike Rumage of Whitnall (7-5, 6-0), and No. 3 singles Mitchell Swing Christian Schiro of Shorewood (6-2, 6-1) won the singles titles. Joel Rodriguez of South Milwaukee defeated Ashwin Sankrithi of Eisenhower (6-1, 5-4 (ret.) in the third-place match. In the third-place match, No. 4 Zach Lambert of Shorewood defeated Pranay Vadapally of Eisenhower (6-0, 3-6, 6-4). Patrick McCormick/Xavier Loomer of Eisenhower beat Adam Ewing/James Kelly of Shorewood (7-5, 6-3) in the No. 1 doubles third-place match. JJ Nelson/JJ Lambert of Shorewood beat Jared Lawton/Ben Schaefer of Eisenhower (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 2 doubles title match. In the No. 3 doubles title match, Cal Papineau/Jack Schill of Shorewood nipped Kevin Dobrzynski/Nick Schaefer of Eisenhower (64, 5-7, 6-3). PAYBACK The Lions took on Shorewood for the Woodland Dual Meet Championship on May 16 and lost to Shorewood, 4-3. Eisenhower jumped out to a 3-1 lead behind singles wins from Sankrithi, Nitz and Swing before Shorewood came back behind a sweep of the doubles flights. "This was a bit of a letdown for our team, especially since our goal all year was to win a Woodland title, and we were within two points of winning the dual during the No. 1 doubles match," Jenders said. "However, the match was very well played by both teams, and Shorewood is a very talented squad, well deserving of the title. We just came up a bit short in a few tiebreaks that proved decisive." IKE SOFTBALL FALLS JUST SHORT IN WIAA PLAYOFFS IKE FALLS TO WEST IN FINAL INNING Courtesy of New Berlin NOW’s Tom Skibosh It couldn't have been more appropriate to have New Berlin West's star pitcher Cheyenne Sowinski face Eisenhower's star catcher Ali Nowak with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh, with West leading, 7-6, in the WIAA regional championship game. Nowak swung but got under the ball a little too much, and after it fell into the glove of centerfielder Maddie Minik, the Vikings celebrated while Nowak covered her eyes and tried to hold back the tears as she played her final game for the Lions. Very rarely when these teams play is there a runaway game, which did happen when West won the first meeting, 6-1, on April 12. But Eisenhower rallied May 19 to score twice in the seventh to take a 4-3 win. IKE ADVANCES IN PLAYOFFS WITH WIN OVER WISCO Courtesy of John Steppe The New Berlin Eisenhower Lady Lions will be moving on to the WIAA Regional Finals with their 3-2 defeat over the Wisconsin Lutheran Lady Vikings. The first two Eisenhower hitters of the game, senior Ali Nowak and sophomore Erica Buechel, reached base via an error and walk, respectively. This set up an ideal situation as there were runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later, a botched play by Wisco second baseman Alyssa Kieselhorst allowed IKE senior Andrea Leder to reach base and Nowak to score from second. Designated player Alyssa Brown then slammed a single into center field, scoring Buechel and Leder and extending the lead to 30. However, Wisco pitcher and Eastern Illinois recruit Katie Grunert shut down the Lady Lions for the rest of the game. In fact, Brown’s single was the only Eisenhower hit of the game. “We only had one hit but it was a big one,” head coach Jeff Setz said. “It gave us a nice lead to go into the rest of the game.” Nowak described Brown’s hit as “huge,” adding that it “gave us all of the momentum.” “It was huge to jump on them right away,” Nowak said. “We were able to get them off their focus and get into their head.” That three-run burst was all the Lady Lions needed offensively thanks to excellent pitching by sophomore Anna Lang. Lang allowed a pair of runs while fanning eight batters in seven innings of work. “Anna pitched very well,” Nowak said. “She had command and location over all of her pitches and was able to keep [Wisco] guessing.” Lang’s solid pitching performance came despite a lengthy weather delay in the fourth inning. “We had the momentum going into the rain delay,” Nowak added. “We lost some of that with the delay but when [Lang] struck out the first batter [after the delay], we got some [momentum] back.” Congratulations to this year’s Special Olympic State Qualifiers! This year, two New Berlin Eisenhower students will be representing our community in Stevens Point for the 2016 Wisconsin Special Olympics. Simon Lien, a Senior graduating this year, qualified for the State Games in the softball throw. Michael Kern, a Junior, qualified for the State Games in the softball thrown and 100 meter dash. Brian Moede, a freshmen, competed in the Regional Competition earlier this year, participating in the 50 Meter Dash, softball throw and standing long jump. Congrats to all participants and best of luck in Stevens Point! "They closed it out the right way with some of their best performances of the season," Simon said. "I wish we could have gotten Jordan for more than two seasons, but I'm glad we got him as long as we did. Jake has really impressed all the coaches this season. He went into this season with the goal of being a great 4x400 runner for us to go along with his stellar high jumping and very much built himself into one of our top relay guys. Ending his high school career as a threeevent qualifier at the state meet is really something to be proud of and proves that his hard work paid off. Jordan and Jake will be playing football this fall at North Dakota. These boys will do great, and I will keep my fingers crossed that they make their way over to the track Cavanaugh finished eighth in both the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 17.84 seconds and the 3,200. His time of 9:26.59 in the latter is a personal best. Broihier took eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.41 seconds). With this win, Eisenhower will face off against their crosstown rival, New Berlin West, tomorrow. Setz emphasized the need for more offensive production in order to bring home another Regional victory. “We have to get our sticks going a bit better when IKE BOYS WINS CONFERENCE TITLE FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1991! "It was an overall team effort for our boys team," coach Billy Simon said. "We had 17 different boys score points for us. That really says something about the depth of this team. Our No. 2 and No. 3 athletes in some of these events came in and really lit it up." The 4x800 relay was sixth in 11:21.19 (senior Leah Ziolkowski, senior Tina Snyder, freshman Haley Tesch, junior Emily Den Braven).Junior Abby Szukalski was seventh in the shot put (305) and eighth in the discus throw (92-51/2). Amanda Leder has been having a wonderful sophomore season and looked great in the 800. Emalie Hahn continues to make strides in the discus and is ready for a breakout meet next week.
