Waukesha West Bands www.waukeshawestbands.org 1 A NOTE FROM THE PODIUM… The start of the 2016-17 school year is just around the corner, and the West Band program is gearing up for another great year! Mrs. Granzow and I are very excited about the performance opportunities that await West Band students, and we are looking forward to working with students and parents as the school year gets underway. We are already setting the tone for a year of great performances through the completion of an outstanding marching band camp and our continuing evening rehearsals and are looking forward to watching the Cadets of Waukesha West’s 2016 production “Chase the Clouds Away” evolve throughout the season. This year’s marching band show promises to be very popular and it is our intention that the success of the marching band carry into an outstanding year for our Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, SWAP, Wind Ensemble, and Solo & Ensemble activities. The complete West Bands roster currently stands at 210 individual students – one of the largest and most active band programs in the state! The success of a music program offering a wide variety of performance opportunities requires great attention to individual responsibility. Parents and students - please be sure to mark your calendars with all our events now so that conflicts can be avoided. Attendance at all events, rehearsals, and performances is crucial to our success. Please understand that even in the large group setting, absences have a negative effect on both the product and process of excellence we are working to achieve. Always be sure to contact a director in advance when serious conflicts arise, and be diligent in your efforts to avoid conflicts through timely planning and creative problem solving. Additionally, there are several things that West Band students and parents can do to help our students and groups achieve maximum musical growth throughout the year. We strongly encourage: 1. Taking private lessons and participating in solo & ensemble activities 2. Supporting your student’s efforts as much as possible by attending performances and encouraging individual responsibility 3. Consider auditioning for area Honor Bands/Orchestras (auditions are held in the spring for participation the following school year) 4. Volunteer to assist the West Band Boosters Be sure to visit the West Band website often (www.waukeshawestbands.org). We are working to update the website as often as possible, and we think you will find it helpful when looking for the answers to questions which are likely to arise in a busy program like ours. In addition to important current information, the website is also a great place to learn about the history of the West Bands, view pictures, review performance calendars, find information about fundraisers, etc. As always, we encourage students and parents to communicate with the directors as the school year progresses. Mr. Duffy can be reached at 970-4005 and [email protected], and Mrs. Granzow can be reached at 970-4124 and [email protected] The 2016-17 West Band program is poised to enjoy another year of outstanding musical growth and performances through the combined efforts of our students, staff, parents, and supporters. Please join us in our efforts to provide the best possible experiences for everyone involved with our program. Sincerely, Dan Duffy & Kali Granzow, Directors - Waukesha West Bands Waukesha West Bands www.waukeshawestbands.org 2 THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who donated beverages, baked goods and TIME to our Band Camp lunches! These meals are a huge undertaking and would not be possible without our wonderful parent volunteers! Many of you helped serve and bake for multiple meals and we cannot express how much this is appreciated. Each year we get the opportunity to see firsthand how much you are appreciated by the kids and staff. Everyone leaves lunch fed, smiling and ready to rehearse again. So for this, we thank ALL OF YOU! Kitty Fehr, Nicole Neu, Kyra Larson, & Jenn Hoggatt Band Camp Meal Coordinators MORE VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED! If you weren’t able to help serve band camp meals this year but are interested in finding other ways to help the Cadets, please pay attention to emails Mr. Duffy will send throughout the season regarding working on props for the show, moving bleachers on Friday nights for the football games and other special requests. Plenty of more volunteer opportunities are available at our Homecoming Dinner and Fox River Invitational as well as this winter’s Flamingo Friday fundraiser at the Delafield Brewhaus. More details about those major fundraising events can be found in this newsletter. If you have any questions about these or any other ways in which you can help support the Cadets and all our bands, contact Kim Dutelle at [email protected] or 262-391-1664. Waukesha West Bands www.waukeshawestbands.org 6 SAVE THE DATE! FOX RIVER INVITATIONAL Sunday, September 25th at 1:30pm The Cadets of Waukesha West will host the 20th annual Fox River Marching Band Invitational on Sunday, September 25th. The show will begin at 1:30pm and will feature bands from Fond du Lac, Franklin, Hamilton, Milton, New Berlin Eisenhower, Sauk Prairie and Whitewater high schools in Wisconsin and from Grayslake North High School in Illinois. This is the first weekend that many of these great bands will be competing this year and it promises to be a very enjoyable show. The Cadets of Waukesha West will also perform a special judged exhibition. At the end of their performance, our graduating seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the marching band program during their time with the Cadets. This is an extremely important event for our entire band program at West (not just the marching band!). It is our biggest fundraiser as it provides well over half the income needed for the Waukesha West Band Boosters’ budget each year. Profits from this event are used to purchase additional musical instruments and equipment and music and to pay for Color Guard expenses, supplementary expenses for the jazz bands and Wind Ensemble when they make special performances around the state, awards for students and a host of other expenses. This means we need ALL band parents to participate, so please be on the lookout for future emails from Mr. Duffy requesting help. It’s not too late!! We are still accepting Happy Ads and business advertisements for those still interested in placing them in our Fox River Invitational program. If you would like to give a shout out to your favorite Cadet(s) or either have or work for a business which would like to purchase some ad space, please see the following forms for information as to how you can participate. Hand wash and hang dry collar regularly (each weekend is recommended). Hand wash and hang dry sash whenever soiled. Please hang all uniform parts properly (jackets on hanger, pants hung by their creases over hanger, hats stored in hat box). DO NOT PLACE MARCHING SHOES IN UNIFORM GARMENT BAGS! Waukesha West Bands www.waukeshawestbands.org 12 WAUKESHA WEST BAND PROGRAM FUNDRAI$ING INFORMATION Throughout the school year, students and parents will be offered various opportunities to raise funds to help offset the cost of band activities. All fund-raising is completely optional, although our comprehensive and successful band program is due in part to the willingness of parents and students to raise funds. We offer two types of fundraisers: General Account fundraisers that benefit the entire band program and Student Account fund raisers that families can use to accumulate funds to pay for various band activity fees and trip costs. Students enrolled in the band program at West can establish an individual band account where a percentage of funds from various fund-raising activities are deposited. Student band account funds can be used as a credit towards the payment of band fees, trip costs, and other West band program related expenses. These funds can be transferred to a younger sibling’s account if a sibling is enrolled in the program or is entering the West band program the following year. Since funds are raised in the band’s name, if there is no younger sibling entering the West band program the following year, any unused funds will be transferred into the band’s General Account. Accumulated funds cannot be returned to students, transferred to other students, or used to purchase personal instruments or equipment. General Account fundraisers are critical to the success of our overall band program at Waukesha West. Funds raised from these events are used to purchase instruments, music, student awards, and to support the overall activities of all the concert bands, jazz bands and the marching band at West. All dates below are tentative. Please check the band website to verify dates as each fundraiser is announced throughout the school year.
