The Rosenbaum House is the only
Frank Lloyd Wright-designed
structure in the state of Alabama.
Designed in 1939 for Stanley and
Mildred Rosenbaum, the Rosenbaum
House is considered by many to
be the purest example of Wright’s
Usonian design.
The Rosenbaum House is constructed
of cypress, glass and brick, and has
been meticulously restored. Its flat
roofs and large overhanging eaves,
the expanses of glass and the flowing
space are all hallmarks of a Usonian.
Typical of many of Wright’s projects,
the house also includes original
furnishings designed by the architect.
The Rosenbaums were the sole
owners and occupants until 1999,
when the house was purchased by the
City of Florence and opened as
a museum.

Hollyhock House is Wright’s first
Los Angeles project. Built between
1919 and 1923, it represents his
earliest efforts to develop a regionally
appropriate style of architecture for
Southern California. Taking advantage
of Los Angeles’ dry, temperate
climate, Hollyhock House is a
remarkable combination of house and
gardens. In addition to the central
garden court, each major interior
space adjoins an equivalent exterior
space, connected either by glass
doors, a porch, pergola or colonnade.
A series of rooftop terraces further
extend the living space and provide
magnificent views of the Los Angeles
basin and the Hollywood Hills.

Designed by famed Chicago architect
Louis Sullivan of the firm Adler & Sullivan
in 1891-1892, the Charnley-Persky
House is a National Historic Landmark as
well as one of the few extant buildings
that display the combined talents of
Louis H. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright.
The house embodies Sullivan’s desire
to develop a new form of American
architecture that would break with the
past and would express new American
values and ideals. Wright called it “the
first modern house in America.” This
new form would be a basis for Wright’s
Prairie style and heralded a fundamental
change in architectural style.
The Charnley-Persky House is
recognized as a seminal house in the
development of modern residential
design as well as a keystone of the
architectural philosophies of Sullivan
and Wright.

Wright built this richly conceived yet

Frank Lloyd Wright used his first
home (1889) to explore design
concepts that contain the seeds
of his architectural philosophy. In
his adjacent studio (1898), Wright
and his associates created a new
American architecture, the Prairie
style. The Home and Studio was the
birthplace of Wright’s vision for a new
American architecture. More than 100
buildings were executed by Wright’s
Oak Park Studio. The surrounding

One of the great masterpieces of
20th-century architecture and interior
design, the Robie House synthesizes
all of the major innovations of
Wright’s design philosophy. The
definitive expression of Wright’s
Prairie style, it is also a precursor of
modernism, featuring an open floor
plan, sweeping horizontal planes,
dramatic cantilevers, and long
ribbons of leaded glass windows. Its
revolutionary design makes it the
most innovative and forward thinking
of all Wright’s Prairie houses.
Set in the heart of Chicago’s financial
district, Daniel Burnham and John
Root’s 1888 Rookery Building is
a Chicago landmark, containing
one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most
dramatic interior compositions, a
luminous and brilliantly articulated
central light court. In 1905, Wright
was commissioned to remodel
the Rookery lobbies. He realized a
stunning balance between Burnham
& Root’s ornamental ironwork and
his own vision to create a spectacular
environment.

Unity Temple (1905-08) represents
a defining moment in Frank Lloyd
Wright’s early career. Designed in
Wright’s Oak Park Studio for his own
Unitarian congregation, it is one of
the first public buildings in America
to feature exposed concrete and is
Wright’s greatest public building
of his Prairie era. The harmony of
the building’s strikingly geometric
architecture and decorative elements
exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic
design. Unity Temple announced a
new era of innovation in modern
architecture.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed six
hotels. Five were built, but only one
remains. Originally opened in 1910 as
the City National Bank and Park Inn
Hotel, the property now functions as a
27-room boutique hotel following an
extensive restoration/rehabilitation
which was completed in 2011. The
Historic Park Inn Hotel is designed
in Wright’s Prairie style and retains
many historic details while featuring
modern amenities. In addition to its
individual significance, the building
was the impetus for the development

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
is home to one of the world’s
finest collections of modern and
contemporary art. This innovative
building, the youngest to be
designated a New York City landmark,
is itself one of the greatest works
of the Guggenheim collection. In
1943, Solomon R. Guggenheim
commissioned Wright to design
a unique building to house his
collection of avant-garde art. During
the subsequent years of planning
and design, Wright applied his vision
of a fluid and organic architecture to
the museum. Ground was broken in
August 1956, and construction was
completed in 1959, six months after
Wright’s death.

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as
the country estate of Isabelle and
Darwin Martin, Graycliff (1926-31)
is set high on a bluff overlooking
Lake Erie, with sweeping views of
Canada beyond. The realization
of Wright’s integration of nature
and architecture, Graycliff’s three
buildings are set amidst 8.5 acres
of historic landscape by Wright.
Acclaimed for its transparency (with
views through the house of the lake
itself), his design of Graycliff sparked
a fundamentally new approach for
Wright for the remainder of his
long career. Experience how Wright
imbued Graycliff with what he called
“repose,” the simplicity and calm of
breathtaking architecture set amidst
verdant acres of grounds on the brim
of the lake.

The Pope-Leighey House is the
only Wright house in the greater
Washington DC region open to the
public. It was completed in 1940 in
suburban Northern Virginia, and is a
stunning 1,200-square-foot example
of a typical Usonian Wright house,
built with the outdoors in mind, with
all the typical elements including
a flat roof, natural materials, a
carport, radiant heated concrete
floors, and board and batten walls.
Commissioned in 1939 by journalist
Loren Pope, the house was sold to
Robert and Marjorie Leighey in 1946
and subsequently rescued from the
path of an expansion of Highway
66 by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation, which relocated it to
the nearby Woodlawn estate for

architecture: the harmonious union
of art and nature. Fallingwater was

The story of Monona Terrace began in
1938 when renowned architect Frank
Lloyd Wright first proposed plans for
a “dream civic center” in downtown
Madison. The project would become
the most debated, time consuming,
controversial venture of his career,
finally being completed nearly 40
years after his death.
Monona Terrace bears Wright’s
signature style with dramatic open
spaces, breathtaking views and
curvilinear design. Guided tours
showcase three on-site exhibits and
provide access to private spaces
within the facility.
