Nice surprises only, please
We all like to be surprised with a gift or a visit
from someone special, but we don't like to be
surprised with unexpectedly high energy bills.
But that's what can happen as the weather
turns colder, the furnace switches on, and
maybe even an electric space heater gets
plugged in. We might forget to lower the
thermostat from the air conditioning season to
the 68° or lower temperature that DTE recommends for the heating
season. So the heat pours out, the gas and electricity flow, and the
energy bill grows. Fortunately, DTE Insight can help you avoid unpleasant surprises.
For one, it tracks energy use ­ you can set goals and make sure
you're staying below targeted energy­usage levels. But that's not all
DTE Insight can do. The app can monitor energy usage in both
kWh and dollars. That makes it even easier to budget for how much
energy you use ­ your monthly bill won't be an unwelcome surprise.

hog. "I couldn't believe how much juice that thing was pulling," he said,
shaking his head in disbelief.

Stay on the hunt for energy waste
Run some experiments around your house to discover energy waste.
With the DTE Insight app and energy
bridge you have the tools to see how
you use energy and can make
changes to save. Here are some
easy ways to start your hunt:
Turn lights on and off to see
how much energy is saved
with the lights off. Next,
determine which lights are
important to keep on and which
don't need to be used as often
or not at all! Even better,
replace most used lights with
energy efficient LEDs. Then
monitor the energy use and
savings over time. LEDs use 75% less energy then
incandescents without sacrificing light output.
Check the energy use level of your entertainment
system. Often these are left on for noise or a game console
is left on for no good reason. Turn it all off and then on to see
the difference in energy use. One of our customers showed a
100 kilowatt (kWh) savings! That's money is his pocket. Save
