Let us know if you need more space! Information and Registration Forms are in the office or online. Registration Forms due to office Friday, January 27. Hope to see you there! Note to Parents: The Greenland Science Fair is intended to be a fun way for students to get excited about science. Students are asked to learn more about an area of interest, prepare a tabletop presentation, and then present the results to fellow students, friends and family. All are welcome from 5K to fourth grade. Over the years the science fair participation has grown and we want to thank you for encouraging your children to participate. In case you have not participated in the past, here are some tips: Most of the kids use a tri-fold presentation board for their display. They are available at Ben Franklin. Some students complete their projects on their own with very little help from their parents. Other students work alongside their parents, and the parents even help with the presentation during the fair. Some projects are very elaborate, others are quite simple. In any case, we would like each student to be prepared to talk about their project as best they can. There are three categories of projects to choose from: Collections - examples could be mounted butterflies, geodes, or even fossils. Demonstrations - often a model or display. For example, a student could show how the planets move around the sun with 3D models of each planet Experiments - these can be as simple or as complex as you desire If you want you can use the 6 steps of the scientific method to help your child through the process: 1. Ask a question 2. Research your topic 3. State your hypothesis 4. Test your hypothesis 5. Analyze your data 6. Report the results Students can work in pairs or trios if they like. Just list who your child is working with on the registration form. Many times siblings in different grades work together on a project. OHS Students help by serving as evaluators during the evening open house. There are no grades or ranking of the projects. The evaluators will be asking the students to explain their projects and what they have learned. The evaluation criterion is available if you are interested. As parents of science fair kids ourselves we know it can be tough to find an idea for a project. The following site lists project ideas by grade level : http://www.education.com/science-fair/ If you have any questions you can contact Bill and Nathan at [email protected].
