Henry and Cromwell walk in the gardens
Henry: You don't think this wedding came too
soon Cromwell? That we should have waited?
Cromwell: No, once the late Queen's guilt was
established, it was the best thing you could do
Henry: Her guilt? You managed to say the word
without blushing
Cromwell: It was proven by two Courts your
Grace
Henry: It was ruled by two Courts. There was
never any proof. Especially on the charge of
incest, that was always too much
Cromwell: She divided your Country
The watch Jane talking to the crowd, accepting
their good wishes, their flowers
Henry: And you don't?
Cromwell: The dissolution of the monasteries
will refill the treasury
Henry: And the violence committed in my name?

Robert Aske walks among the burning ruins.
He helps an injured nun. Picking her up and

anguish
Nun: Oh, thank you Mr Aske, thank you. You
must do something Mr Aske. The people will
listen to you
New Scene 10:03:27
Robert Aske addresses a crown of angry,
militant Catholics
Roars of support from the crowd
Ask: The Monastery at York is still burning
tonight. Reports are reaching me from all over
the Country of monks burned alive, of priests,
good men, slaughtered. Atrocities committed, not
by evil barbarians from some distant land, but by
our King, for his new Church, a Church he dared
daub, the Church of England. And I stand here, a
proud Englishman and I'll tell you what the
English Church is, and that is the Catholic
Church, the one true Church of Rome. A Church
for which, I don't know about you, but for which I
am prepared to die

the back of the crowd, backs out of the door
Aske: So, go home, go home, go home, and rouse

is hell bent on ruining this God fearing land

HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Jane wakes. Henry is sitting by the window
Jane: What's the matter, my Lord? Won't you
come back to bed?
Henry: I would if I thought I could sleep. But I
can't, I would just lie there thinking
Jane: Is there nothing I can do?
Henry: Thank you, no. I have people who's job
it is to help me
Joining him on the window seat
Jane: Yes, but which of them can you trust? You
should surround yourself with people who have
your best interests at heart
Henry: Like who?
Jane: Your family. Wife, daughters
Henry: My eldest daughter wishes me dead
Jane: That's not true. I have spent time with
Mary and she is anxious to see you
He touches her knee
Henry: Be careful Jane, those words were put in
her mouth by the Spanish Ambassador, that is a
trap. You feel hot. Promise me you will speak to
your physician tomorrow
Jane: If you promise me you will make peace
with the Lady Mary
Henry: Jane
Jane: If I could persuade her to come to Court,
and agree to your conditions?
Henry: She will never agree. She thinks I
murdered her mother
Jane: But if I could persuade her
Henry: Well, if you could do that. If you could
fill the treasury without spilling blood. If you
could heal my rift with the Vatican, yet reform
the Catholic Church. If you could strengthen my
armies, yet guarantee peace. If you could do all
of that, then perhaps you would make me happy.
But you can't. Anyway, there's nothing compared

you
Aske: Amen
New Scene 10:07:51
The red haired man delivers his news to
Norfolk
Norfolk: How many did you say?
Red Haired Man: Twenty thousand and growing
Norfolk: Oh, good God
Red Haired Man: They're calling it the
Pilgrimage of Grace
Norfolk: With the King's army in France, he's
vulnerable. I must warn him. I'll give you a
letter, make sure he gets it. He won't like it when
he sees who it's from, but maybe it'll restore our
friendship

The red haired man arrives
New Scene 10:08:56
Henry bursts into Cromwell's apartment.
Cromwell is eating. He leaps to his feet in
shock
Henry: Robert Aske
Cromwell: Who, my Lord?
Henry: Aske. A former lieutenant of mine, and a
loyal soldier
Regaining his composure
Cromwell: What about him, your Grace?
Henry: Well, it appears that he is raising troops
against me
Cromwell: What?
Henry starts to slap Cromwell with his own
serviette
Henry: In protest at the dissolution of the
monasteries. Now, the idea was to increase my
popularity and put an end to papist corruption.
Instead, my people raise armies against me
Cromwell: Then I suggest we send an army to....
Henry: What army!? They left York with twenty
thousand men. By the time they get to London,
they'll be twice, maybe three times that amount.
What! Have! You! Done!?
He continues to beat Cromwell
He calms and sends away Cromwell's
associates
They leave
Henry: Leave us
Henry: Send a messenger. Tell him the King
remembers him well and wishes to avoid any
conflict with an old comrade. And we would see
him here, in person
Cromwell: But, your Grace....
He leaves. Cromwell sinks into his chair
Henry: Just do it man, I'll take care of the rest
New Scene 10:10:37
Henry returns to Jane
Henry: I'll tell you, that Cromwell lately does me
more harm than good
Jane: There's something I have to tell you. I went
to see my physician, as you said. When I told
6

him the symptoms he was concerned
Henry: What did he say?
Jane: Well, he took my blood and measured my
pulse
Henry: And?
Jane: I do have a condition. But it is not the
plague

has several Pilgrims with him, all ready to
fight. Henry drops his weapon
Servant: Robert Aske, your Grace
New Scene 10:13:27
They meet in the great hall, both flanked
by their supporters
Henry: Thank you for agreeing to see me. The
last thing I want is a former comrade taking up
arms against me
Aske: Particularly when the odds are so against
you
Henry: Yes. Some wine?
Aske: I've come to talk, not drink
Henry: Well, then, talk. What are your demands?
Aske: First, that you stop immediately, the
slaughter of innocent priest and friars in your

suppression of the monasteries
Henry: I will, just as soon as they put to an end
their corruption and decadence
Aske: They are innocent for the most part, as you
well know
Henry: Be mindful of your tone. I am your King
All sides draw their swords
Aske: Only as long as I allow you to live. And
stay on the throne
Henry: And your second demand?
Aske: That you return all the money and
valuables that you have stolen from the Churches
Henry: I need to fill the treasury somehow. How
can I protect a Country if I don't have the money
Aske: Stop giving the existing wealth to corrupt
nobles, and be more judicious in your choice of
wars
Henry: It's a fine day when a simple lieutenant
lectures the King on foreign policy
Aske: And a still finer day when a simple
lieutenant is in charge of fifty thousand men
Henry: And your third demand
Aske: That you punish those responsible for these
abominations
Henry: You do realise I could have you executed
on the strength of what I've heard here alone
Aske: Yes. I also realise that you have no choice
but to comply
Henry: And if I do. If I do. Do I have your word
you'll take your followers back to York, and
never step outside the city gates again?
Aske: You have my word
Henry: Right. Then I agree to all three demands

HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Cromwell is removed from the room by the
Cromwell: No, my Lord. My Lord, no
guard
Starts to laugh
Henry: And you Robert, you cheeky sod. I may
call you Robert?
Completely thrown
Aske: Yes
Henry: I'd like to invite you stay at my palace for
two or three days
Aske: Your Highness is most kind, but....
Henry: We fought together at Tournai, if memory
serves. Well, a few of us get together every year
and celebrate the victory. I'd like you to come
Aske: I really must be returning
Henry: It's an invitation from the King, Robert.
You say yes
Starting to look nervous
Aske: Yes
They raise their goblets to each other
Henry and his guards leave the room. Robert
Aske breaths a shaky sigh of relief and is
congratulated by his Pilgrims
Henry: Excellent. Excellent

Cromwell in his cell in the Tower, talks to
Cranmer and Barnes
Cromwell: I'll tell you, the boxing of the ears I
cope with. The taunts and jests too. But to be
humiliated like this, and in front of Aske, it's just
too much. Perhaps we've over done it Cranmer.
Perhaps we're moving too quickly
Cranmer: No, Master Secretary, have faith. We
are quietly, steadily changing this Country for the
better
Barnes: Throughout Europe the word is
spreading. In Germany, the Protestants already
have the majority
Cromwell: I know, but sometimes I think I should
leave the struggle to others, and concentrate on
giving the King what he wants
Cranmer: No, Thomas, you have your beliefs, and
9
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
your conscience, and what is a man without those
Cromwell: Alive, my Lord. Alive
New Scene 10:18:15
The banquet. Henry and his knights. And
Robert Aske
Sir Francis wears a patch over one eye
Henry covers one eye with his hand
Much hilarity
Robert Aske looks embarrassed and then
immensely relieved and emotional as the
King embraces him
They all sing a rousing, popular war song.
Much comradeship and drunkenness
Henry: Remember how they ran, those French
knights. They no more wanted to fight than have
one single hair on their head disturbed. Then, Sir
Francis, here, led his men round from the East.
Now I had no other choice. If I had ordered him
to come round from the West, he'd never have
seen the enemy. He'd have rode straight past
them. But the real turning point in the battle was
dear Robert, here, when he led his troops on a
fearless dawn raid, straight through the middle of
the sleeping enemy. With insane courage and
ruthless determination, which I have had the
misfortune to experience myself these last few
days. But we're friends now, aren't we. Friends.
Friends! Sing. Someone sing
Henry: I'm pleased you stayed, Robert
Aske: So am I, my Lord. I only wish my
followers had been here to see it. They'd have
seen a King to be proud of
Henry: Goodnight
Aske: Goodnight, my Lord
Henry: Sleep well. Sleep well
New Scene 10:20:33
Music in 10:20:33 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 00:15
The pregnant Jane is being examined by her
physician. Her brothers are present
Physician: Good news, the heartbeat's strong,
and the head is facing the right way. It's
progressing well
Aside to the physician
Thomas: And the gender?
Physician: I'm afraid there's no way of
establishing that. She could eat salt, some people
believe it helps, if you want a boy. You do want
a boy?
Thomas/Edward: Yes
10
The Physician returns to Jane
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Edward: Can you even imagine if it is a boy. A
Seymour, heir to the throne. We will be uncles to
the future King
Thomas: And if it isn't, her head will roll
Edward: No, no, her head will only roll if she
continues with her mission to bring back his
daughter, Mary, to Court
New Scene 10:21:26
At Court. Henry and Jane upon their thrones.
Mary enters. The Court falls silent as she
approaches her father. She kneels. He stands.
She takes his hand and rises. He kisses her.
She recoils
Crier: The Lady Mary, your Grace
Henry: Welcome Mary
Mary: Your Grace
Henry: I believe you have something to say
To Jane, a forced speech
Gasps around the Court.
Mary: I acknowledge you as Queen, and your
unborn child as the one true heir, replacing me.
And I pray for you both, that it is a Prince
Henry leaves them
Jane reaches out a hand to Mary
Jane: Welcome, Mary. I am pleased to see you
here
Mary: And I you, your Majesty, for I recognise
that it is entirely down to you, that the King has
accepted me back. For this, I shall be forever in
your debt. But, what of the Church? I have heard
of uprisings in York, and I fear the King will
retaliate
They embrace
Jane: Quite the opposite. Master Aske spent
Christmas with us, and the King has agreed to his
every demand
New Scene 10:23:20
Robert Aske arrives at the Church in York. He
runs inside, only to find it deserted
Blood drips onto his hand from above. He
looks up. A body falls from the gallery.
Guards surround him. He draws his sword.
Norfolk emerges as Aske kills one of the
guards, and another, and a third. He is
wounded by two bolts from a crossbow and
Aske: I'm back! I return after a month at Court,
having secured our every demand. I think a
hero's welcome is in order
Norfolk: Don't kill him, I want him alive. Make
sure you take him alive

a blow to the head knocks him unconscious
Music in 10:24:46 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 00:55
New Scene 10:24:51
Robert Aske is strung up over the city gates.
He cries out in pain. The crowd watch in
silence. Blood drips from him as Norfolk
rides under him, out of the city
Aske: God bless his Holiness the Pope. God
bless the one true Catholic Church of England
Norfolk: If he falls unconscious, make sure you
wake him. I want his death to last a full three
days
New Scene 10:25:37
King's chambers. Norfolk is welcomed back
into the King's open arms
Henry: My good friend
Norfolk: Your Grace
Henry: It's good to have you back. I need a lion
like you by my side
Norfolk: It is where I belong, your Highness. I
pray you never send me away again
Another bear hug
Henry: Oh, no. Come here
A servant enters, only just preceding the
Queen
Servant: The Queen, your Grace
Jane: Is it true, what I've heard? That Robert
Aske has been murdered and hung from the gates
of York?
Henry: The man raised an army against me, he
got what he deserved. Now, if you don't mind,
madam....
Jane: But, Henry, you promised
Henry: Henry? Henry is a name reserved for the
bedchamber
Jane: You said you would agree to his demands
Henry: I am the King of England, I don't agree to
demands
Jane: And his followers and allies? What of
them?
Henry: They will be silenced too
12
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Jane: Is that it? You will just silence all the
dissenters?
Henry: To speak against the King is treason
Jane: Oh, my Lord, don't do this. Do not hide
behind words like King and treason. Don't forget
you're a man of flesh and blood who will one day
be judged as all men of flesh and blood are
Henry: Am I imagining this? Am I now being
lectured to by a woman?
Jane: You are being cautioned by your wife.
Who's conscience will not allow her to stand by
and watch as the man she loves degenerates into a
monster....
Henry slaps her around the face and then takes
her arms, shaking her. She loses balance and
falls to the floor. He turns to leave but she
suddenly screams in pain, clutching her
stomach. Norfolk reaches her first and shouts
to the servant
Henry: To hell with your conscience. You are
my wife, what I want from you is sons, not
opinions, or meddling. Sons! Sons!
Norfolk: Quick. Call the Physicians
New Scene 10:27:02

HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Servant: My Lord, I have news from the Queen
Henry: And?
Servant: You have a son. A healthy son
Henry collapses to his knees before the altar
then stands, throws open the church doors as
the bells starts to ring, and leaves to go to
his son
New Scene 10:28:22
Jane is weak. The midwife takes the baby from
her. Henry enters. He kisses the baby and
Henry: Jane. Thank you dearest, Jane. Thank
sits beside his wife
you, thank you
Jane: I gave you a son. You're not angry with
me?
Henry: Angry? I will show you generosity like
no other woman has seen. I will carpet your
rooms with flowers for the rest of your life. I will
make you the most adored, most celebrated
Queen in history. Jane? Jane? Please, leave us,
the Queen is tired. She must rest, rest, too many
people, too many people, she must rest
She faints. The Physicians attend her
The Physician takes Henry aside
Physician: She has a fever my Lord, and is very
weak
Henry: God
Physician: This night is important. If she
survives....
Henry: You must save her. Do you understand?
She is the Queen of England. Mother of my son

Two years later
The nurses play with young Prince Edward
in the garden. Cromwell and Cranmer join
them
Edward coughs
Cromwell: And how's the Prince?
Nurse: In perfect health
Cromwell: Then why does he cough?
Nurse: Because he swallowed his milk too
quickly
Cromwell: Or because he has an infection?
Nurse: He doesn't have an infection
Cromwell: Really? You can tell the difference
between the two coughs?
Nurse: Yes, I can
Cromwell: Even if your life depended on it?
New Scene 10:31:56
Henry is signing papers for Cromwell. He
has aged and gained a lot of weight
Cromwell: Before I go, your Grace, there is
another matter. It has been two years since the
late Queen died, and we still have not agreed on a
replacement. I realise you have no desire to
remarry, but I would be failing you if I did not
urge you to consider it
Henry: Why?
Cromwell: The young Prince's health
Henry: What about it?
Cromwell: His nurses are worried about the
plague
Henry: The Prince is fine, he has his father's
constitution
Cromwell: The plague has no respect for
15
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
constitution. And there would be less danger to
the Prince, from other sources, if he had brothers
Henry: I will not marry again. Besides, I am
aware that you've been making enquiries to
various Princesses in Europe, and I was refused
Cromwell: I have found one who is willing
Henry: Oh, some Protestant heretic, no doubt, to
serve your own ends
Cromwell: She is a Protestant, I admit. The Duke
of Cleves daughter
Henry: Well, I'm not interested
Cromwell: Your Grace, since your
excommunication, France has allied with the
Emperor. England needs the Germans
Henry: So, what's she like?
Cromwell: Our ambassador has confirmed her
appearance was most pleasing
Henry: Most pleasing?
Cromwell: Most pleasing, your Grace
Cups his hands over his breasts
Henry: And she's German. Nice flaxen hair and,
at least....
Cromwell: Actually, Lady Anne is dark
Henry: Dark?
Cromwell: But still a renowned beauty
Henry: Well, send the Court painter
Cromwell: But that will delay matters. Time is
not on our side
Henry: I will not commit to someone without
proof of beauty. I mean, in the name of God, I've
got to sleep with her
They chuckle together
Cromwell: Yes, your Grace

The Boleyn and Howard families receive
communion
New Scene 10:34:35
As they leave the church
Norfolk: It's painful to watch. The King is half
the man he was in spirit and twice the man he was
in size. Cromwell and Cranmer push him this
way and the next, to suit their own ends. I tell
you Bishop Gardiner, it's a sorry England you
return to. And the latest is this Protestant German
Princess which, quite apart from the heresy,
leaves England exposed politically
Gardiner: It is our duty, as Catholics, to put up a
rival
Norfolk: Who? He's been rejected by three
French Princesses already
Tomas Boleyn: What about Marie de Guise?
Gardiner: Already contracted
Thomas Boleyn: The Duchess of Milan?
Gardiner: She said she could only marry him if
she had two heads so he could dispose of one at
his pleasure
Norfolk: Why rush to promote some stranger
when we have our own clan
Thomas Boleyn: I've had one daughter murdered
by the King. I've done my share
Norfolk: What about my late brother's girl?
Dowager Duchess: Who, little Catherine?
Norfolk: She was always a pretty little thing
Dowager Duchess: She's barely fifteen
17
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Norfolk: Is that too young?
Dowager Duchess: Shame on you Thomas, she's
no more than a child

Henry looks at the portrait of Anne of Cleves
He eats throughout this whole scene
Henry: Not bad
Cromwell: The painter, Master Holbein, was
certainly favourably impressed
Henry: And not just because you instructed him
to be? And not because you whispered the
political significance of this choice in his ear
Cromwell: Absolutely not, my Lord
Henry chuckles
Henry: Well, she has full lips, and a rising bosom,
which I like. When can we meet her?
Cromwell: Just as soon as the lawyers have
finished with the contract
Henry: What lawyers?
Cromwell: The Princess, it seems, has been
unusually cautious
Henry: But German lawyers. I don't like the
sound of that
Cromwell: There's no need to be concerned. I
have it all under control. And, all being well, the
Princess shall soon set sail for England
Cromwell leaves
A servant brings a platter of fruit
Henry: Good. Let me know when she does and
we'll meet her on the way. Give her a surprise.
Get me a plum. Two plums. Nice and ripe

HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Cromwell: Only if the union serves the Kingdom
Gardiner: Even the late Cardinal Wolsey was
never so close he could instruct our King with
whom he should sleep
Cromwell: And nor do I. His Majesty has gone
to Rochester to inspect her for himself when she
arrives. But, we all pray, I'm sure, for the safety
of this Country, that he will be satisfied
Gardiner: We do not pray, Cromwell, that
England falls into the hands of the heretics
Cromwell: Protestant and Catholic, my Lord
Bishop, we all are brothers in the Christian
Church
Cromwell walks away
Gardiner: I tell you, Cromwell is powerful
enough already. If the King likes the match, he'll
have the reigns to this Country. We might as
well cut out throats now
Norfolk: A lot can change yet. Don't forget, all
this rests on a simple portrait
Gardiner: Aye, but one by Master Holbein, who's
talent is famed throughout Europe
Norfolk: Yes, but you know these artistic types.

New Scene 10:40:07

Henry: Ah, Cromwell. What brings you at this
time?
Cromwell: Just wondering, my Lord, when you
were thinking of going to bed?
General laughter
Henry: When I'm tired. Do I look tired?
Cromwell: No, of course not
Henry: Well, what's the problem
Cromwell: It's just.... This is your wedding night
Henry: Yes?
Cromwell: So, I thought his Majesty might not be
going to bed to sleep
20
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Henry: Why? What else should I be doing?
More laughter
Cromwell: Your Majesty
The laughter dies
Henry: I hope I'm not mistaken, Cromwell. I
hope you are not telling your Sovereign when, or
with whom, he should lie
Afraid
Cromwell: Of course not....
Henry: Shut up. You dare call me to bed with
this woman, to humiliate me
Cromwell: No, my Lord
Henry: Not only will I never sleep with her. I
will never touch her. Shake hands with her.
Stand within a farmers mile downwind of her.
Now, if you want to do something useful, find a
way out of this contract, or, within a month, your
flesh will be feeding worms on Tower Hill
Cromwell leaves. Truly afraid now

Norfolk: It's Uncle Thomas. Come to the door
She opens the door, feigning sleepiness
Catherine: What time is it?
Dowager Duchess: Catherine, have you no
manners? Curtsey to the Duke
A small curtsey
Norfolk: Come into the light, where I can see you
She steps forward. He looks at her face and then
removes her nightgown so that he can see her
body
Norfolk: Does she bleed yet?
Dowager Duchess: Yes
Norfolk: Tell me Catherine, are you interested in
bringing great glory to your family and securing
incalculable wealth and power for yourself?
Catherine: Yes, of course I am, but how would
I....?
Norfolk: Don't worry about that. Just give me
your word, you will do everything I say, and
follow my every instruction to the letter. Do you
understand?
22
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Catherine: Yes
Norfolk: Good. Very good
New Scene 10:44:24
Cromwell meets with his lawyers
Cromwell: And?
Lawyer: Nothing, Sir
Cromwell: After three months searching, you
have found no irregularities in the contract. No
contradictions that we can exploit
Lawyer: None. It seems the Queen was a snow
white virgin until she reached our shores
Cromwell: And remains one still, despite having
been married for five months. It seems the
Catholics will have the last laugh after all
Lawyer: So, we are to dissolve the marriage?
Cromwell: Yes. And watch powerlessly as the
German lawyers hit us with every penalty clause
they've got
Lawyer: Does the King know?
Ashen
Cromwell: Not yet
New Scene 10:45:10
Cromwell tells Henry who is being tended by
physicians who are massaging his leg. Henry
is furious
Henry: What!?
Cromwell: I beg you, give me a chance to remedy
the situation....
Henry: Remedy what man!? They're signed and
sealed!
Cromwell: It was the artist, Holbein's fault. If he
had not painted....
He turns on everyone in the room. They all
leave rapidly
Henry: No, it's your fault. You have allowed
them to make a fool of me. I never wanted this
marriage. I never even wanted to meet Anne of
Cleves. You said it was important. You have
made a fool of me. Get out. Get out! The King
does not need your useless remedies or your

Norfolk: An act of mercy. Had it been me, the
wretch would have burned
New Scene 10:47:12
Cromwell turns to the executioner. It's hard to
say who is the most terrified
Cromwell: Good God, how old are you
Executioner: Sixteen, my Lord
Cromwell: Is this your first time?
Executioner: Yes, sir. But I've been practicing all
night
Giving the boy his payment
Cromwell: Right. Do the best you can. That's all
I ask

HENRY VIII - PART TWO

Norfolk: This is it, Gardiner, this is our moment.
The King is so angry, we can use this to finish off
the rest of the Protestant ringleaders
New Scene 10:47:46
Back to the scaffold. Cromwell speaks to the
boy to reassure him and kneels. Puts his neck
on the block. The boy swings his axe which
embeds itself in Cromwell's back. He cries
out in pain. The boy closes his eyes and takes
another swing. Misses the neck again.
Cromwell chokes on blood. The third swing
is successful
Cromwell: Don't be nervous
New Scene 10:48:24
Cut back to Norfolk and Gardiner. Looks of
satisfaction as the cannon roars
New Scene 10:48:28

to death. Do you renounce your Protestant faith?
Music in 10: - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 00:43

Crowd Member: Burn him!
Gardiner: You die a heretic and a sinner
Barnes: I die a child of Christ
Gardiner: Burn him! Let him be an example to
all those who wish to forsake the Catholic Church
The pyre is lit
Barnes: Oh, God, save me. Jesus Christ receive
me
He starts to scream
New Scene 10:49:19

of Luther, he deserved to die
Cranmer: Perhaps, but is it wise to burn him like
that, and in full view of his supporters
25
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Henry: People die in this Kingdom, when I say so
Cranmer: Majesty, I was just concerned
Henry becomes more angry
Gardiner goes away but Cranmer remains,
attempting to distract Henry
Henry: Spare your concerns and worry about
yourself. I know you have a wife in secret. Is
that fine conduct for a Catholic Archbishop? Is it
Gardiner? Go away. Go away!
Cranmer: Your Grace
New Scene 10:49:57
Henry and his Courtiers are playing cards
Gardiner puts a document in front of Henry.
It's a death warrant
General laughter
Norfolk enters
Gardiner: I just need a signature
Henry: It's the last one I sign, Gardiner. Can't
you see, I'm busy here. How did he find that
card. I thought I was the only man allowed to
have four queens
Norfolk: Your Grace
Henry: Thomas, another man I've made
grotesquely rich. I hope your manners are better
than this lot and you will lose some of it back to
me
Norfolk: Delighted, as always, your Grace. Your
Grace may remember I mentioned I'd brought my
niece, Catherine, to Court
Henry: What?
Norfolk: My late brother's daughter
Henry: Oh, yes, yes
Norfolk: She's here now, may present her?
Henry: Yes
Music in 10:51:00 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 00:30
Catherine enters. Henry gapes
Catherine: Your Majesty
Henry: Come here. What did you say your name
was again?
Catherine: Catherine, your Grace
26
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
He beckons her closer
Henry: Catherine Howard. Let me have a closer
look. Do you play Catherine?
Norfolk shakes his head at her
Catherine: I understand the rules, your Grace, but
do not play. Cards are not proper entertainment
for ladies
Henry: And what is proper entertainment for
ladies?
Catherine: Needlework, prayer and painting
Henry: Quite right. Quite right. I'll take two
Norfolk looks horrified
Catherine: No, your majesty. Take three. Sir
Nicholas changed two, which means he's looking
for hearts, Sir Francis wanted just one, which
means he's looking for a pair, and the player
sitting West....
Culpepper: Thomas Culpepper
Catherine: Looks so glum, he wishes to fold.
You should change three to give you a chance of
three of a kind
Francis: My Lord
Henry: I'll take three
The king wins. Culpepper and Catherine only
have eyes for each other

New Scene 10:52:58
Henry and Norfolk walk in the garden where
Catherine sits on a swing
Henry: My God, she's beautiful. Beautiful,
Thomas. Do you think she would ever have me?
Norfolk: Have you? His Majesty forgets, he is
the King and can have whoever he wants
Henry: Of course, but I mean, willingly? Do you
think that something so pure, so perfect, could
ever actually grow to love me?
Norfolk: She has often spoken to me of her
attraction for his Majesty
Henry: Really?
27
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Norfolk: Yes. And how unlucky he's been and
how she would like to serve him as a wife and
mother to his children
Henry: Really? She really said that?
Norfolk: She did
Henry: Then she is a rose Thomas. A rose
without a thorn
New Scene 10:53:55
Henry is being dressed up. The door opens
Servant: Lady Catherine, your Majesty
Norfolk, Catherine and two ladies in waiting
enter. The ladies leave but Norfolk stays
Norfolk leaves
Henry: Catherine. You may all leave us now.
If you wouldn't mind, Norfolk?
Henry: Catherine, I wish to ask you something.
God, my hands, they tremble. You're probably
thinking that I've said these things a thousand
times before, but that's not true, I never have
Catherine: Your Majesty?
Henry: I know I'm old and I have lost my looks
Catherine: That's not true
Henry: No, it's the truth. But, since I have met
you, I've experienced something I never thought I
had the right to feel again
Catherine: Which is?
Henry: Hope, Catherine. Hope that maybe I have
a chance, before I die, to love someone, properly.
To give, where I have only taken. To make
someone happy

He struggle to get to his knees. She takes his
hand, more to steady him than anything
He starts to kiss her hands. She is revolted
but he is not looking at her face
Henry: I know this has come quickly, and I
should give you more time to get to know me
better, but I'm afraid time is against me. So, if
you would allow me, Catherine. Will you marry
me? Marry me and become my Queen
28
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
New Scene 10:56:54
The wedding day. Henry and Catherine emerge
from the church to greet the cheering crowd.
Cranmer breaks away from the couple to speak
to a man in the crowd
Cranmer: John, how are you?
This is the girl who shared a room with
Catherine
Lascelles: I'd like to present my sister, Mary
Lascelles, who wishes to speak to you on an
important matter
Mary: It's about the Queen
Cranmer: Then speak, Mary
Mary: I'd prefer if we did it in private
Mary and John exchange a glance. Cranmer
leads them away
Cranmer: Come now, what could you possibly
say about the Queen that you could not say in
public
New Scene 10:57:58
Night. Ext. Castle
Cranmer: (vo) I thank you for coming to see me,
Mary

night
Dowager Duchess: I wish your mother was still
alive. If she could see you now. I also wish that
she were here, that she could tell you a little of
what to expect tonight. And how to conduct
yourself
Catherine: Don't worry, Great Aunt, I think I'll be
alright
Sniggers from the ladies in waiting
Dowager Duchess: What does that mean?
29
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Catherine: It means that I know from experience
that my looks please most men
Dowager Duchess: I don't know what that means
girl, and I'm not going to ask. Know this, the
King is taking you as a virgin. If he suspects
otherwise, all our lives are in danger. Do you
understand?
Catherine: Yes
Dowager Duchess: Whatever you know or may
not know about these matters in reality, as far as
he's concerned, you know nothing
Catherine: Yes
The Dowager Duchess leaves. Catherine has
the grace to look a little apprehensive
New Scene 10:59:18
Henry is also being prepared for bed
Henry: My God, I can hardly contain myself.
Feelings I thought were dead and buried are
revived at the mere sound of her name. She is a
revelation. She will give me sons, many sons. I
will lie with her every night, twice a night, three
times a night. We will have an army of sons
New Scene 10:59:42
Music in 10:59:43 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 01:33
Gardiner blesses the bed. Everyone leaves
the King and Queen alone
Henry: My God, I have cast my eyes over some
of the great treasures of this world, but none
which compare with you
New Scene 11:00:35
The Seymour brothers meet with Cranmer
Edward: And you think this Lascelle woman can
be trusted?
Cranmer: Why not? She shared a room with the
Queen at the Dowager Duchess's. She's known to
share our views on religious reform
Edward: But even if it is true, fornication before
marriage with this....
Thomas: Francis Dereham
30
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Edward: It's a scandal, but not a crime
Cranmer: But it was not just fornication, was it?
There was also a pre-contract to marry
Edward: Says who? There are no official
documents. No, we should tread carefully. The
King's love for this girl is blind and until we find
something that implicates her beyond all doubt
we should remain quiet
New Scene 11:01:19

New Scene 11:01:23

Henry: I can hardly look you in the eye
Catherine: My Lord, please. I beg you, don't
worry, it was just one night
Henry: It was our wedding night
Catherine: It's alright. I won't tell anyone
Henry: Deny you look at me and say you do not
wish that in my place was some virile young
Courtier
Catherine: No
Henry: Are you sure
Catherine: Yes
Henry: You give me your word
Catherine: Yes, my Lord
31

door. The lady in waiting opens it
Lady in Waiting: Master Culpepper your Majesty
Catherine: Show him in
Lady in Waiting: I beg your pardon?
Catherine: I said, show him in
Culpepper enters the room, making sure to
avert his eyes
Catherine: Poor Master Culpepper, the King
keeps you very busy. This is your third trip today
Culpepper: Doing the King's pleasure is an
honour
Catherine: And the Queen? What of her pleasure
Culpepper: I do not know what pleases the
Queen, but if there is anything I could do, it
would be my honour too
The ladies in waiting giggle
Catherine: Why laugh, Mary?
Lady in Waiting: No reason, Ma'am
He opens the box and shows her the necklace
Catherine: Now, there is something that would
please me, Master Culpepper, which is that you
look at me when you speak to me. And you can
open that box. What a beautiful necklace
Culpepper: And a letter, from the King
He gradually moves closer to her. She leans
forward so that he can put the necklace on her
Catherine: Ignore the letter and bring me the
necklace. Now come closer. Closer. Now, put it
on

is being observed by Lady Rochford
New Scene 11:05:42
Lady Rochford reports to Norfolk
Norfolk: Damn her. Is she trying to ruin us all?
Lady Rochford: Don't worry, I'll put an
immediate end to it
Norfolk: Wait, wait, wait. How are things with
the King?
Lady Rochford: If you refer to marital matters,
the King, it seems, is barely capable
Norfolk: What? So, not only is she not having an
heir, the one thing that would keep us all safe,
she's unwittingly doing everything she can to
bring us all down
Lady Rochford: It's a disaster
Norfolk: Unless....
Lady Rochford: Unless what?
Norfolk: Unless, instead of two problems, we use
one to solve the other. The King wants a son, but
is unable. Catherine wants her lover, who is able.
Come with me

Ext. Day. Castle
New Scene 11:06:36

Lady Rochford. I was terrified. I thought, if you
found out, you'd kill me
Lady Rochford: Quite the opposite. I understand
better than anybody what it is to be unhappily
married. I'm keen to do everything I can to help

Henry: Well?
Servant: I couldn't find her, my Lord
Henry: What?

Henry: Of course she was. She said she was
feeling unwell and she would be resting all

The servant leaves again
Cranmer looks uncomfortable

Culpepper: Is it always going to be like this?
Catherine: No
Culpepper: Hiding away? Meeting in secret?
Catherine: It's only as long as he's alive, and then
we can marry and have our love in the open
Culpepper: Then let's hope the fat fool dies soon
Catherine: A fine way to talk of your King
Culpepper: Believe me, I was his most loyal,
most trusted servant. I would have fallen on my
sword for him, until I met his wife. Until

New Scene 11:09:23
Cranmer and the Seymour brothers huddle
together
Edward: It doesn't make sense. Lady Rochford
actually facilitating it? That old snake would
never do anything without Norfolk's approval.
And he would never jeopardise Catherine's
position. Unless sleeping with Culpepper would
somehow help her
Thomas: Either way we have no choice. We
must tell the King
Cranmer: But it would break his heart
Thomas: Oh, for God's sake, what's the
alternative. That one of his closest Courtiers
continues to cuckold him behind his back? And
give us a bastard as future King of England?
Cranmer: God forbid. No, there's no alternative.
I'm just not sure I've the strength to do it face to
face
New Scene 11:10:15

Lady Rochford: Me?
Norfolk: The King has discovered the truth about
Culpepper and the Queen
She becomes hysterical. He claps a hand over
her mouth
Lady Rochford: Oh, my God, oh my God, oh my
God
Norfolk: Shut up! Shut up! Nothing will happen
to you if you make it absolutely clear I was not
involved. Listen to me. I'm the only one who
can save us, but I must appear blameless. Do you
understand?
Lady Rochford: What is going to happen to me?
They'll have my head
Norfolk: No, they won't. Don't worry. I'll blame
it on the girl. I'll tell them you knew nothing
He hides as guards pass by and then leaver her
to her fears
New Scene 11:13:37
Norfolk and the King
Norfolk: I promise you, your Majesty, it was the
girl and Lady Rochford. They're in league
together
Henry: Why, Thomas? Did I not reward you
enough?
Norfolk: Yes. Yes you did. And in return, have I
not been your most loyal servant
Henry: But you knew everything that was going
on. You knew it would break my heart. Am I to
always be betrayed by those I love?
Norfolk: Your Majesty, please don't do this to me
Henry: Your ambitions are greater than your love
for me. That in itself is treason
The guards move in
Henry will not look at him. He is escorted
away by the guards
Norfolk: Your Majesty, wait. Please

Edward: And, Lady Latimer
Henry: What does she want?
Edward: She won't say, your Grace, except that
it's confidential
Henry: Show her in
Calling her
Edward: Lady Latimer
Catherine Parr enters
Henry: Later Latimer
Catherine: Your Majesty
Henry: You have five minutes
Catherine: My brother William, your Grace, is
petitioning parliament for a divorce
Henry: I know, I've seen him. He wants me to

confer the death penalty on his wife. No doubt he
thinks that a fellow cuckold will be sympathetic.
I am determined to grant it, I'm impressed at your
loyalty to him
Catherine: No, not to him. I come to petition for
her
Henry: For her? But she has betrayed your
brother
Catherine: Indeed
Henry: And humiliated him. And put shame on
your family
Catherine: Yes
Henry: But you would spare her life
Catherine: She's done wrong. She's committed a
terrible sin for which she should pay. But must it
be with her life?
Henry: That is the law
Catherine: I appeal to you Sir, because you are
above the law. If you spare her, you give my
brother the chance, in time, to forgive her
Music in 11:20:29 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 00:43
Henry: So, you would have your brother show
compassion to this adulteress?
Catherine: And so guarantee his soul at the time
of reckoning. After all, do we not most please
God, when we pardon those that have wronged
us?
Henry: Lord Parr is a fortunate man to have
someone watch over him so
Catherine: It is what any good sister would do
Henry: Is it? With no thought of personal gain
Catherine: My brother's happiness is my personal
gain

Banquet. Henry sits with Cranmer but he's
watching Catherine
Henry: She has been married twice before you
know, and to men much older than herself
Cranmer: Indeed, your Grace, and is known
throughout the Court for her intelligence,
modesty and her virtue
Henry: And don't forget beauty
Henry beckons Catherine to join him. The
Seymour brothers watch closely as Catherine
is invited to sit with the King
Henry: It is not right for a beautiful woman, such
as you, not to have a husband
Catherine: Your Majesty
Henry: Or an ailing man, who is close to death,
not to have a companion
Catherine: Indeed. And I hope his Majesty soon
finds somebody suitable
Henry: What about you, Lady Latimer? You are
a good woman
Catherine: Alas, I am promised elsewhere
She looks at Thomas Seymour
He stands. Kisses her hand. The Court falls
silent. As he leaves he speaks to Cranmer
Henry: May I ask to whom? Well, of course, the
Seymours. Never one to miss a good
opportunity. I must leave with heavy heart, and
dream about what might have been. If there was,
for once, no Seymours in my world
Music in 11:23:39 - Specially Composed by Rob Lane - Duration 01:25
New Scene 11:23:43
The Seymours huddled in a corridor
Edward: Think, baby brother, think. Lady
Latimer is undeniably an advantageous match
right now, but just think how much more
advantageous she'd be as the King's widow
Thomas: No
Edward: With all the land and revenue she'd bring
as the widow
Thomas: And when will that be?
41
HENRY VIII - PART TWO
Edward: A year. Two at the most. His heart is
weak, his leg is infected, he'll soon be dead. He
wants a companion for the last few months of his
life. Let him have her. God knows, he won't be
able to sully her
Thomas: You know, Edward, of the two of us, I
always thought I was the more ambitious. I was
wrong
Edward: Come. Swallow your medicine. Take a
nice foreign posting somewhere, bide your time.
Wait for news from your big brother, that the
King is dead
New Scene 11:24:42
Henry and Catherine are married
New Scene 11:25:02
Henry and Catherine walk in the gardens
Henry: Elizabeth has agreed to come?
Catherine: She's on her way
Henry: Mary, too?
Catherine: Yes, and Mary too
Henry: Thank you, Catherine. Thank you. You
know this will be the first time we've been all
together. I have so much planned. We shall play
cards. Mary is a sharp player, that much I know,
and she has a great fondness for young Edward.
We shall play music. Elizabeth has a love for
music. And tomorrow we shall ride out, all of us
together
He tires and has to sit
She leaves him for just a minute. He sits in
the sun. A bird sings. He drifts back in time
Catherine: I'll fetch your shawl

Henry: What is this?
signed
Henry tries to sign but lapses into
unconsciousness
Cranmer: Death warrants, your Grace. It is for
the Duke of Norfolk, your Grace
Physician: It is time
Cranmer nods and goes to fetch the young
Prince Edward
Cranmer: It is time
Edwards goes to his father's side
Henry: Edward. Is that you?
Edward: Yes, father, I'm here
Henry: Edward, I am dying. By tonight you will
be King. Your sisters, Mary and Elizabeth,
honour and protect them always
The Seymour brothers hover in the background
straining to hear the King's words
Edward: Yes father
Henry: The Country is on the threshold of civil
war. You have but a faint grip on the crown.
Your enemies hide in the shadows
Edward: I am ready, father
Catherine fights back tears
Henry: Are you? Then tell me, what is the most
important thing to do to be a successful King?
Edward: Continue the reforms. Suppress the
Papists. Expand our territories in France.
Increase the taxes on the nobles....
Henry: And?
Edward struggles. Cranmer gives him a
reassuring nod and he remembers
Edward: And have a son. That is the most
important thing I can do
Henry: No. No. To be successful as a King, first
you must be successful as a man. Listen to your
heart, Edward. For the voice of your conscience
is the voice of God
Henry is caught by a spasm of pain. He grips
Cranmer's hand. He cannot speak
Cranmer: Do you die in the faith of Christ? He
squeezed my hand. He gave an answer. The
King died in the faith of Christ
Catherine starts to cry. Courtiers kneel.
Cranmer closes the King's eyes

New Scene 11:31:22
Norfolk sits in his cell. As the bell tolls, he
raises his head and starts to pray in thankful

Narrator: The Duke of Norfolk escaped death.
In time, he was released from the Tower, given a
full pardon and regained all his lands and power

coffin

And Mary
Anne of Cleves
Cranmer blesses the King's coffin
Elizabeth sprinkles rose petals on Henry's
coffin
Narrator: Edward became King Edward VI, but
his health was frail. He died of consumption,
aged 15. Edward Seymour, Lord Protected of
England. He ruled by proxy until 1551 when he
was imprisoned in the Tower and beheaded.
Thomas Seymour did finally marry Catherine
Parr, but broke her heart when he attempted to
seduce the 14 year old Princess Elizabeth. He
was executed for treason in 1549. Bloody Mary
came to the throne in 1553. She burned hundreds
of Protestants as heretics, and died embittered and
unloved in 1558. Anne of Cleves outlived all
the wives. Widely liked and respected, she was
buried rich and popular with full honours.
Thomas Cranmer continued to lay the
foundations for the Church of England, only to be
arrested for treason on the orders of Mary I, and
burnt as a heretic. And what of Henry. After
lifelong struggle to give England an heir, his
glorious successor was not a son, but a daughter.
Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry and Anne Boleyn,
came to the throne in 1558 and ruled England for
45 years
