76% of the tenants have jobs or are in school, but over the
past year we have seen an increase in reduced hours or
lay-offs. TD bank ran two financial literacy workshops and
twenty women opened bank accounts.
100% of women reunited with their children will remain
together and others will make progress towards reconnecting and possible reuniting.
100% of families remain together and there have been no
instances of child abuse or neglect. Four women had their
children make extended visits for the summer or holidays
and are working towards reuniting and living together.

WHO WE ARE
Our mission is to establish and operate small, communitybased transitional and permanent housing with supportive
services for homeless women with disabilities and their
families.
Affectionately known as Sunflower Houses, our comprehensive and model housing programs are located at various
sites in Brooklyn. Housing + Solutions serves up to 51 single
women and families a year, and with the help of dedicated
supporters, our programs and services continue to achieve
and expand. Make a difference. Join us.
In 2012, Housing + Solutions celebrates 10 years of service!
HISTORY
Housing + Solutions was founded in 2002 to create a model
of permanent housing for homeless women with disabilities
and their families, who are in recovery from substance
abuse and who may have criminal justice histories. It is our
belief that with stable housing and supportive services
women are inspired and, as tenants at a Sunflower House,
are required to make positive life choices—reuniting with
their children and families, returning to school and holding
down a job. The first tenants called their home Sunflower
House. Today we operate houses in East New York, Bedford
Stuyvesant and Brownsville.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE
Homeless women and families
Housing + Solutions has year-round volunteer opportunities
that include a need for camp counselors, pro-bono services
and workshops for our tenants, administrative office work,
and gardening enthusiasts. Contact our offices today!
Women have to be referred from a homeless shelter or a
drug treatment facility, only if the resident has been
previously homeless and has a disability. Each prospective
tenant has to fill out an application and be interviewed.
