Session 1: Current situation and capacity in the South-East Asia Region to report on the global
voluntary targets
The goal of this session is to take stock of the current situation and capacity to collect and report
on the NINE global voluntary targets. For each target, there will be a 10 minute presentation by a
resource person followed by a 30 minute discussion. It is suggested that the presentation and
discussion should be focused on: Is baseline information available for the target? Is there a
reliable system for data collection in the Member countries? What is the current capacity of
Member countries to collect and report on the target every 5 years? What additional data
collection mechanisms are needed to enable reporting on the nine global targets? At the end of
the session, the current regional situation and capacity will be summarized and recommendations
will be made on minimum actions/mechanisms needed for collecting, using and reporting data on
the nine global voluntary targets.

The goal of this session is to have in-depth discussions on new targets being proposed for
Member countries of the Region. For each new target, there will be a 15 minute presentation by
a resource person followed by a 45 minute discussion. It is suggested that the presentation and
discussion be focused on: What is the epidemiological burden and public health relevance in the

Region? Are there evidence-based, cost-effective and feasible public health interventions
available? What is the proposed indicator (numerator and denominator) and target (goal stated
in numeric value)? Are there existing mechanisms at the country level to collect data, set a
baseline target and monitor changes over time? Is it feasible to achieve the target at the country
level? What are the priority actions that need to be implemented at the country level to achieve
the target? The session is expected to evolve a consensus and make recommendations on the
new targets for the Region (in addition to the nine global voluntary targets).
