ADVANCED BASKETBALL RULE BOOK Grades 1st – HS | Greater Wichita YMCA GENERAL 1. Players a. YMCA jersey is supplied with registration once a year, but is not required to be worn but all players must wear matching uniforms. b. Jersey’s must be tucked in. c. Non – marking athletic shoes should be worn. 2. League Rules a. Each team will play 10 games. Plus pre season round robin play (if needed) to determine level of ability and an end of season tournament. b. Games will begin with a jump ball. Thereafter, possession arrow for all divisions will alternate on all “tie-ups” and quarters. c. Score and league standings will be kept. All score sheets must have coach’s signature at the end of every game. Standings will be updated weekly by 6PM on Tuesday. d. Forfeit policy – Once the season schedule is distributed, no revisions or reschedules will take place. Coaches must submit all potential schedule conflicts for review with their team registration before the season’s registration deadline. Teams will forfeit any scheduled games they are unable to attend. NO EXCEPTIONS. i. Teams will be given 5 minutes after game time to arrive. After that games will be forfeited. If they arrive after 5 minutes they can play but only until the next scheduled game time. e. Each team will provide one score keeper and one person to run the clock f. High School teams must have a coach at all times. Person must be 21 years of age or older. Game will not start until both teams have a coach of proper age on the bench. 3. Gameplay a. Players i. A team must have 4 players for game to start; games will be forfeited after five minutes if 4 players have not arrived. b. Clock i. 2, 20 minute halves running clock. If score is differential is less than 20 clock will stop in last 2 minutes of second half only. ii. 3 minutes at the half or less depending on the official’s discretion. iii. Overtime will be 2 minute, stop clock period. 1 minute for each overtime after that, stop clock period. c. Timeouts i. Teams will be given 4 time outs per game and can be used at any time. Teams will be given 1 time out per over time. d. Substitutions i. Free sub on all dead ball situations. e. ii. Players must check in with the scorer’s table and wait to be called in by the official. Coaches i. One head coach and one assistant coach will be allowed on the bench during the game. Coaches must stay in the coaches box at all times. ii. Only the head coach will be allowed to address the official before, during and after the game. iii. If assistant stands up off bench he or she will receive a warning, second time they will receive a technical. This will count against the team. iv. The assistant coach may confer with players and table personnel during dead ball situations. v. Officials will call coaches on the court for injuries when necessary. vi. Under no circumstances shall any coach confer with another coach or player unexpectedly. vii. Prior to each game, officials to have a pre-game with each head coach and one player team captain. viii. Coaches must supply their own practice/warm up basketball. Only game balls will be supplied by the YMCA. If both coaches would like to use a different game ball, if agreed they may use it. 4. Technical Fouls a. Player i. If a player receives two technical fouls in a game, they will be ejected from the game and suspended from the next game. ii. If a player received 3 technical fouls in a season, they will be suspended for one game and the parents and player must meet with the Sports Director & Sports Committee before being permitted to play again. iii. Four technical fouls in a season will result in removal from the league, and no refunds will be given. b. Coach i. 1st technical foul will result in a meeting with the sports director to discuss his/her actions. ii. 2nd technical foul will result in suspension. Suspension to be determined by the sports director. 5. Fan and Bench Behavior a. Each team is responsible for the actions of their fans and their players. A team can receive a technical foul for fan behavior during a game if the officials feel the fans behavior is inappropriate. Fans will be asked to leave for improper behavior. 6. Facility Use a. Coaches will be held responsible for the proper care of the facilities we use. b. No food or drinks are allowed in the gyms at any time. Water may be used in a nonbreakable container. c. No tobacco or alcohol products anywhere on YMCA property. d. All children must be escorted by an adult whenever they leave the gym area, no exceptions. e. Basketballs are to be used only in the gym, no dribbling or passing in the lobby. f. Siblings of players may come and watch, but must be under direct adult supervision at all times. They will not be permitted to leave the gym without adult supervision. GRADE-SPECIFIC RULES 1st & 4th GRADE Ball Size: Junior Size (1st grade only); Women’s (28.5) grades 2nd – 4th Goal Height: 8ft and 6 inches (1st – 3rd Grade Only); 10ft for 4th grade Court Size: Small Court Defensive Regulations Teams will play man – to – man or zone defense. Teams may full court press in the last two minutes of the second half only. Teams may press until there is a 20 pt lead. Once the lead is cut to less than 20 points, full court press may resume. o First offense is a warning and second offense results in a technical foul. Offensive Regulations Lane violation will be called A lane violation is when an offensive player remains in the lane for more than 5 seconds without an attempted shot by the offense, or unless the player in the key receives a pass. After an attempted shot, or receiving a pass, a new 5 second count will begin. Players have 5 second to inbound the ball. Backcourt violations will be called. o A backcourt violation is when the offense takes longer than 10 seconds to establish possession in the frontcourt. o Closely Guarded o A five second violation is when the offensive player is immediately guarded, and is inactive (is not dribbling, passing, or shooting) for more than five seconds. 5th – High School Ball Size: 5th – 8th Grade will use Women’s (28.5); High School will use Official Size ball Goal Height: 10ft Court Size: Large Court Defensive Regulations Teams may play man-to-man or zone defense.
