Uniform Policy and Requirements

HSPA Uniform Policy & Requirements / Updated 9/4/13
HSPA Uniform Policy & Requirements
All students at HSPA are expected to wear full school uniform. Compliance with the
school's uniform policy is a core rule for all NSW Government schools and an
expectation in the School Discipline Code of this school.
The school community believes that the wearing of uniform is important for the following reasons:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
It defines an identity for the students and their school in its community. People judge each
other by their appearance. It can shape expectations and influence reactions. Uniform helps
ensure that people are not misjudged as individuals or learners.
It increases the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition of potential
intruders in the school.
It is affordable and not dependant on peer pressure for transient fashions. Without a uniform,
many students would compete in a fashion stakes. This is a costly and divisive exercise.
It promotes positive community perceptions about public education and being part of a
successful team.
It enhances the health and safety of students involved in school activities. School policy
reflects the expectations in the community where corporate uniform is the norm and there are
strict codes for occupational health and safety.
It promotes school pride. Our community expects high standards and students are judged
poorly when they do not meet community standards. Uniform enhances our student's
reputation and their prospects in a competitive job market.
We are all individuals and the school recognises that in wearing a uniform, we are foregoing
some of that individuality. However, individuality can be expressed through our achievements
and our contributions in academic, sporting, cultural and creative aspects of school life.
Important Notes
1. Students are not permitted to individualise, interpret, accessorise the uniform with
jewellery, large coloured or studded belts, studded bracelets and neckpieces, large earrings
etc. Where practical, offending items will be taken and returned to students at an appropriate
time. Sometimes it may be necessary for the item to be collected by parents.
2. Footwear (also see below), in particular thongs, sandals or open shoes without an enclosed
heel are not permitted. The school uniform specifies that shoes should be all black and DET
policy requires that shoes be enclosed with leather uppers. Sports shoes should only be worn
during PDHPE or to school on sports day. Canvas Gym boots (Converse or otherwise) do not
meet the requirements of the uniform policy. No colour variations will be accepted. Stockings
when worn should be ALL BLACK and plain. Stockings which are patterned or are other
colours are not permitted.
3. Students should wear clothing to school at any time which is sufficiently modest in a school
environment. This refers to any student where underwear may be visible, but particularly
female students who expose their midriff. Shorts should cover the thighs and not be rolled up.
4. Ensemble performance clothes/uniform (also see below) must not replace normal school
uniform
5. Sports shorts are to be worn on Wednesdays only (Sport day). Students are expected to
change into their sports shorts for PDHPE lessons, and then change back into normal uniform
at the end of the lesson.
6. Year 12 may wear their special commemorative jacket during Year 12

Consequences for Non-Compliance with the Uniform Policy
Students may be excluded from certain school and school-linked activities:
• If their clothing compromises agreed upon school community standards articulated in the
school uniform requirements, and might be considered damaging to the image of the school
in the larger community context.
• Where the health and safety of the student or of other students, particularly as defined by
occupational health and safety legislation, would otherwise be compromised.
Ongoing non-compliance with the Uniform Policy will be regarded as an infringement of the school's
student discipline policy. A range of disciplinary actions may be taken by the school including:
• Students may be given clothing from a pool in the uniform shop to change into for the day.
• Parents may be called and asked bring in appropriate uniform items, or students may be sent
home (after parents have been notified).
• Students may be placed on detention.
• Repeat offenders may be suspended from school
• Withdrawal of privileges including permission to attend school excursions/incursions and
school representation.
Performance Ensemble Uniform
• Some HSPA dance, drama and music ensembles have a particular performance or uniform or
dress requirements.
• These are NOT to be worn as normal school uniform. Ensemble performance uniform is to be
worn only for performances as directed by the ensemble director.
• Students who need to wear performance or rehearsal clothes for rehearsals are required to
wear normal school uniform to school then change at the start of the lesson. Students must
then change back into normal uniform (even at the end of the final period for the day).
Uniform Pass
Students who are unable to wear an item of uniform to a school on a particular day should bring a
note on the day and report to a deputy principal on arrival. The letter should be dated, signed by the
parent and state the reasons why uniform is not being worn. A pass will be issued for the day.
Shoes
The HSPA Correct Shoe Guide (see attached) identifies a range of school shoes available in many
shoe outlets. The shoes depicted comply with the uniform requirements except the shoes which are
indicated with a red cross which do not enclose the foot and are not suitable for subjects involving
practical lessons. ‘Mary-Jane’ style shoes do not support OH&S requirements. The prices on the
sheet are meant as a guide only. Students may wear sports shoes on sport days, as part of the sports
uniform. On days when students have PDHPE, they should bring their sports shoes into which they
can change Please note that "ballet flats", canvas shoes, basketball shoes and Converse style
shoes, do not comply with the uniform policy.
