For questions 21 – 25, mark A, B or C.
ANIMAL SUPERSTARS
There are many animals that are fast, or strong, or smart. Everyone knows that sharks swim quickly and silently, that bears and
crocodiles are strong, and that dolphins are very smart. But which are the superstars of the animal world?

FAST, FASTER, FASTEST!
The cheetah wins the race on land. These cats can run 113 km (70 miles) an hour.
In the water, the Dall porpoise (a cousin of the dolphin) can swim up to 56 km (35 miles) an hour.
The Dall porpoise is playful, but it is very shy around humans.
But the fastest animal in the world is up in the air. The peregrine falcon is a fierce hunter that can dive at
322 km (200 miles) an hour---right into its prey! This bird also has amazing eyesight.
STRENGTH
People often think of elephants when they think of strong animals, and they are. An African elephant can
lift 270 kg (600 pounds) with its trunk, or nose. But elephants are large and weigh a lot. The strongest
creature on land is really an insect---the rhinoceros beetle. This beetle can carry things that are about
850 times its own weight. They can fly, but not well, and they often make loud noises. Rhino beetles are
very popular pets in some parts of the world.

SIZE
The African elephant may not be the strongest animal on land, but it’s the biggest. A male elephant can weigh more than 6,000
kg (13,000 pounds) and be 3.7 m (12 feet) tall. Surprisingly, these huge creatures walk very quietly and run very quickly. When
they’re scared, they make really loud noises to tell other elephants about the danger.
The real prize for size goes to the blue whale. The blue whale is the largest creature that has
ever lived on Earth. It’s bigger even than dinosaurs. A blue whale weighs about 1,800 kg (4,000
pounds) when it is born. Adults can weigh about 180,000 kg (400,000 pounds) and be 25-32
m (80-100 feet) long. The tongue of one of these giant whales weighs as much as a whole
elephant. These graceful swimmers are some of the loudest animals on the planet as well.
