The Grass Valley™ Kayak™ HD and HD-upgradeable Kayak SD switcher family
includes 14 highly affordable systems designed for live production, small
corporate studios, and editing applications in environments requiring HD and/or
SD production capabilities ranging from 1 to 4.5 M/Es. This powerful, multi-format
expansion of our popular Kayak family features a compact design, superior image
quality, and a number of high-end features not found in any other manufacturers’
products. Kayak HD is also available with an optional Kayenne™ XL control panel.

Six keyers per M/E create
advanced on-screen looks
• Kayak offers versatile key compositing with
four full-function keyers and two linear/
luminance keyers per M/E. Each of the four
full-function keyers per full M/E have linear,
luminance, and optional Chromatte™ chroma
key and iDPM functionality. With the DSK/
Half M/E option, the 8 RU frame can have
up to 28 keyers.
• A DSK/Half M/E option adds either an
additional compositing engine with four
linear/luminance keyers for use as an
upstream M/E or downstream Program
Preset, or as four DSKs that can be placed
downstream of any of the full M/Es or
Program/Preset.

Extensive set of iDPM and eDPM means you never run out of effects channels
• With features that far exceed “squeeze and tease” or “resize engines,” Kayak incorporates powerful internal digital
picture manipulator (iDPM) effects. Each iDPM provides four channels of video and key per full M/E, all of which can
be optioned with extensive nonlinear (warp) effects as well as a full palette of lighting, defocus, glow, and recursive
effects.
• The eDPM (expanded Digital Picture Manipulator) provides the advantages of an external DVE compositing multiple
channels to re-enter on one or more keyers, and can also be used for M/E background transitions.
• The 4 RU frame can have up to 8 channels of iDPM, and the 8 RU frame up to 20 channels with the eDPM option.

FlexiKey programmable clean feeds provide “key” options for simplified multicast
productions
• Independent graphics on outputs for simulcast applications are simple with Kayak. Kayak HD has FlexiKey™ – with six
outputs (four PGM per M/E, two PVW) and programmable clean feeds to include any or all keyers in an M/E on any
or all of four outputs of the M/E, in any combination.
• Useful for alternate client feeds and for simultaneous HD/SD channels, Kayak’s outputs can be branded differently
for different clients, or have graphics placed for a 4:3 aspect ratio of an SD feed when used with the SetDef output
conversion option.

Transition offset interface enables quick creation and save of complex transition
effects such as flying keys with animation and embedded audio
• Kayak’s exclusive Multi-mix with transition offset provides separate timing control of each transition element using a
graphical user interface. Transition elements include keyers, backgrounds, iDPM channels, eDPM channels, external
DVE channels, and external DDR or RAMRecorder™ channels.

Internal conversion means simultaneous multi-format video production
• Completely self-contained, Kayak’s SetDef output conversion, combined with MatchDef input conversion, allows
complete, multi-format production with up, down, or cross-converting input and output formats, including aspect
ratio conversion on up to four of every 24 inputs and two of every 12 outputs.
• Signals converted with MatchDef video input converters can be used anywhere within the Kayak HD production
switcher, sent to any output (including aux buses), and do not consume expensive resources such as resizers or
other M/E resources.
Easily upgradable from SD to HD without swapping hardware
• If you are working in SD today but need an affordable, easy transition to HD tomorrow, you can convert a Kayak SD
model to a multi-format Kayak HD model via a straightforward software upgrade.
Adding a Kayenne XL panel provides access to a new set of features
• As an option to the Kayak HD frame, the Kayenne XL panel provides a larger control surface ranging from 1 to 4 M/Es.
• The user interface is further enhanced by the use of user-definable RGB color buttons, two rows of crisp OLED
source name displays per M/E, and a large touchscreen menu panel.
• Source rows may be delegated to different functions and the P-MEM panel memory keeps track of the various setups.
• The panel’s hot-swappable, modular design also makes it easy to service.

Built-in framestores on all full-function keyers eliminate channels of character
generator
• Every full-function keyer in Kayak HD/SD production switchers has a built-in video and key framestore. Reduce the
need for multiple channels of character or logo generator by storing these graphics on the keyers themselves. This is
a standard feature on every Kayak model and available on the full M/E keyers.
• Video and key images are stored upstream so they are available in the keyers and can be modified by the internal
Digital Picture Manipulators with 2D or 3D Kurl™ effects along with Spektra lighting, defocus, glow and output
recursives.

RAMRecorder simplifies animated transitions with embedded audio in video clips
• Kayak has six channels of internal RAMRecorder with embedded audio record and playback. Video and key may be
recorded independently or together and time shifted against each other.
• Video capacity is up to approximately one minute of full-frame HD video or five minutes of SD. Non-volatile storage
of thousands of stills and clips is possible on the dedicated RAMRecorder hard drive.
• With the unique Active Area feature, any part of a full raster can be stored, using less RAM capacity – a very useful
feature for recording, storing and playback of stills and clips such as animated logos.

Attach macros to most control panel buttons for instant access to macro playback
where you want it
• Integrated macro capability allows easy creation and recall of repetitive or complex operational sequences, including
a macro editing facility. In addition to dedicated buttons, macros can be attached to most control panel buttons for
combining operations such as taking and playing a source with a single button press.
