THE PULSE October October 4th, 4th, 2011 2011 aa connection connection between between harris harris creek’s creek’s youth youth ministry ministry and and parents parents Seeking the Welfare of the City... PARENT CHALLENGE L8 Nite “It’s just Group Work” by Landon Collins I always appreciated the teachers who would leave time at the end of class for students to begin their homework. Often, if we worked fast enough we could get all of it done and not have to worry about doing it at home. When I was in 7th grade our science teacher had finished teaching us what we needed to learn for the day and she had given us time to do our assignment. As we began reading and answering the questions at the end of the chapter our teacher went to her desk in the back corner of the room and began to grade some papers. If you think back to your middle school years you might remember that these questions are sometimes quite difficult. There were a few I was having trouble with and I decided to get some help from a buddy’s paper. I thought I was being Continued sneaky, but apparently not sneaky on Pg. 4 enough, and my teacher saw... [1] We will be hosting our second L8 Nite of the semester on Saturday night, October 22nd from 9:30 pm midnight. This L8 Nite will be a drive in movie here at the church. We will be showing the movie Megamind, which was released in 2010. We are asking students to bring blankets to lay on the ground and chairs to sit on. We will have a concession stand complete with drinks, candy, and popcorn. Encourage your students to come out and bring a friend or two. When told to leave, Lot hesitated and after being told not to look back, his wife turned turned to look and as a result, she became a pillar of salt. When God is calling us forward we cannot cling to the things in our past. This week’s devotional reading is Genesis 20:1-28. We believe it is important for students to spend time in scripture throughout the week so encourage them to keep up with the story we are studying in Genesis. Event Highlight: Revolution: Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader Our Fall Revolution series begins on October 9th, and will last four consecutive weeks. We will be hosting Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Student Center and the series accompanying the show will be called Tough Questions. This is another one of our front door events so encourage your students to come and to bring their friends. [2] Thank You’s Scripture of the Week • To the Davis family for providing breakfast for Integr8 on Sunday morning. • To our Integr8 table leaders. Our numbers continue to increase and the conversations with students and leaders continues to be transformative. “I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.” -Amos 5:21-22 We Need Your HELP! WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU Needs thank you for meeting our needs PRAYER REQUESTS Due to the increase in the number of students attending on Sunday mornings, we are in need of individuals who are willing to serve on Sunday mornings at Integr8 by leading discussion at tables. If you want to find out more about Integr8 or you know someone who might be interested, please let me know. SERVICE LIFE GROUPS BALANCE CONNECTION That our students would recognize what role they play as our youth ministry seeks the welfare of the city. For our Life Groups to grow as communities of faith. For the two new groups we are launching this fall. That students would be able to find the proper balance and commitment between sports, church, school, etc. That the students we encounter at L8 Nite and our other front door events would get connected to this youth ministry. [3] Continued from Pg. 1 BIG IN 2011 Keep These Events in Mind These events are essential to what we are doing in 2011 at Harris Creek. This means we need “all hands on deck” when it comes to getting the word out, participation, and execution. Please keep these major calendar items in mind when planning your year so we can ensure the success of these events! PARENT CHALLENGE CONTINUED... “It’s just Group Work” by Landon Collins ...my eyes wandering over to my friend’s answers. She quietly said, “Landon, what are you doing?” To which I calmly responded, “I thought you said it was group work.” A recent article posted by Youthworker.com titled, Youth Culture Lesson: Test of Character told the story of Samuel Eshaghoff, a 19 year old sophomore at Emory University. Eshaghoff was allegedly charging high school students up to $2500 to take the SAT for them. This case is not an isolated incident as a 2010 study by the Josephson Institute of Ethics shows that almost 60% of high schoolers say they have cheated on a test in the last year, and over a third of them said they had cheated twice or more. Why do students cheat? Is it because it’s just easier to get the answers for yourself than look them up? That is how it was for me. I knew I could find the answer if I just looked for it in the chapter we were studying, but I thought it would be easier to get the answer from a friend. Perhaps students cheat because there is a ton of pressure to get good grades. This wasn’t the case for me, but for many students, the pressure they receive from home to make good grades pushes them to get those grades by any means necessary. There is also the pressure of maintaining a good grade point average to be competitive for admission to college. Whatever the reason cheating, now seems like it is just one more thing that everybody is doing. But that fact alone doesn’t make it ok. When was the last time you talked to your students about cheating? Contrary to many student’s beliefs, cheating is a big deal. Most colleges have honor councils that will dish out strict punishment to those who have been caught. Cheating isn’t just a big deal to schools. Scripture says “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are His delight” (Proverbs 11:1). “No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence” (Psalm 101.7). The challenge this week is to talk to your students about cheating. Ask them if they sense any pressure from home or school to perform well in the classroom. I am not suggesting it’s ok to slack off, but I don’t think getting good grades to avoid punishment is the right approach either. Cheating is often a shortcut and if not kept in check, this shortcut for grades could easily turn into a shortcut in life.
