Eastern Woodlands
One of the shelters of the Eastern
Woodland tribes is called Wigwams.
They are made of whatever the
Native Americans had available. Such
as: bark, animal skins, and water
tight rush mats made of cattails. In
the winter all of these items will be
used.
This is a mask made by the False
Face Society. The False Face
Society was a group of healers
who used special masks with
spiritual properties, they carved
themselves. The masks are used
in healing rituals which invoke the
spirit of an old hunch-backed man.
I chose to do the Eastern Woodlands.
Some tribes in this area are the Iroquois,
the Illinois, the Shawnee, and the
Chickasaw.
This is a canoe, commonly
made by the Algonquin
tribe.The bark cover of
Algonquian canoes is more or
less completely lined with very
thin, wide "splints" of wood
sheathing.
Another shelter of the Eastern
Woodland tribes is called a longhouse.
They are the long, narrow, one room
houses. They were built from timber and
often represent the earliest form of
permanent structure.
This is an Eastern Woodland style
fishing spear. They are made out of
dogbane, a wood known to be very
useful in this area. Obviously, these are
used for fishing.
