Showcase - Meet local published writers
and hear their stories, as well as samples
of their work. Explore the diversity of local
culture as part of a year-long celebration of
the Indiana Bicentennial.

Indiana - Learn about the best places to
vacation in the Hoosier State.

inspire and unify Hoosiers as one of the
major commemorative events of the 2016

Jasper County was
established in 1838
and, as of 2010, is
home to over
33,000 people.
•
The county was named for
Sgt. William Jasper, a famous scout
for the Continental Army during
the American Revolutionary War.
•
During the Civil War, Jasper County
enlisted 935 soldiers on behalf of
the Union. The 9th Indiana Infantry
Regiment, produced by Robert H.
Milroy, became famous for its
involvement in the Battle of Philippi.
•
St. Joseph’s Indian
Normal School was
established in 1888.
It later became St.
Joseph’s College
•
The early Jasper
County library was housed in
various rooms of the courthouse
until 1904 when a Carnegie grant
was obtained for construction of a
library building.

Indiana was admitted to the United
States as the 19th state on December
11, 1816.
•
“On the Banks of the Wabash” is
Indiana’s official song.
•
The state bird of
Indiana is the cardinal,
and the state tree of
Indiana is the tulip tree.
•
Indiana is known as
the Crossroads of
America and the Hoosier State.
•
The famous explorers, Lewis and
Clark, started their expedition of the
Northwest Territories from Fort
Vincennes in what is now Indiana.
•
Below Indiana is one of the richest
deposits of top-quality limestone
found anywhere on earth. Many
government buildings throughout the
U.S. are built from this limestone.
•
The poet, James Whitcomb Riley,
was born in a log cabin in Greenfield,
Indiana. He glorified his rural Indiana
childhood in poems such as “Little
Cousin Jasper.”
•
Elvis Presley’s last verified public
performance was in Indianapolis on
June 26, 1977.
