MONTHLY SPECIALS FEATURED INGREDIENTS Cherries: Sweet or sour, cherries are bursting with nutrition. Tart cherries are one of nature’s few sources of melatonin, a hormone that lowers body temperature, making us sleepy. We include cherries in both sweet and savory dishes this month. Peppers: The misleading name “pepper” was given by Christopher Columbus after bringing the plant back to Europe and telling of their spice being similar to peppercorn. Peppers are known for their high levels of vitamin C and are a natural breath freshener. Since peppers come in many varieties, we will be featuring hot and sweet peppers including bell, jalapeno, poblano and cayenne. Summer Squash: Just like Winter squash, Summer squash comes in many varieties. High in potassium and vitamin C, these versatile fruits can be used in all preparations from raw to cooked and are great for baking as well. We are able to feature locally harvested varieties including pattypan, zucchini and yellow. After operating the Bergin’s Minneapolis Produce market until it became the site for Target Center, they decided to expand their fresh fruit division and grow within the twin cities to supply many restaurants, hotels, and clubs. They grew large enough to be able to supply fresh produce to all of Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This third generation business now supplies to the entire mid-west, specializing in fresh produce, nuts and nut products including our all-natural peanut butter.
