TUDOR WORKSHOP
HAMPTON COURT VISIT
THURSDAY 21 JANUARY 2016
TUESDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2016
As part of Year 5’s Tudor topic we have organised an exciting workshop and trip for this term.
Tudor Workshop – Thursday 21 January 2016
This workshop will be held here at Boxgrove. Tudor times are brought alive through a mixture
of activities, artefacts and hands-on experiences.
The day starts with a short talk on why and how the Tudors came to power, the effects of
religious turmoil and how the discovery of the New World changed Europe, putting the Tudors
in the wider context of European politics and religious history. The rest of the morning is taken
up with 3 activities: a Tudor quiz, Tudor games and Tudor clothes. The afternoon starts with
Tudor medicine. This is followed by the jousting game and a Tudor dance to finish the day.
The children can come to school in costume if they wish. Attached are some ideas that you
may find useful.
Hampton Court – Tuesday 9 February 2016
We will leave school at 9:00am and will return by 3:15pm. This visit will include workshops:
one will be on the court life, where the children will learn about the lives of rich and poor at
the court of Henry VIII, in the very rooms where lords danced and servants slept; the other is
focused upon discovery and expansion.
Children, using artefacts, will develop their
understanding of Tudor expansion and exploration, role playing the stories of the adventurous
seafarers and merchants who risked their lives to bring exotic wares to England.
In addition to one of these workshops, the children will explore the Tudor sections of the
palace including the Wolsey Rooms, the Great Hall, Henry VIII’s apartments, Chapel Royal and
Tudor Kitchens. They will also spend time studying the outside architecture, courtyards and
Tudor Gardens.
The children will need to wear school uniform and bring a warm
coat/waterproof and disposable packed lunch.
In order to finance these activities, a voluntary contribution of £17.50 is requested (Hampton
Court £13.00, Tudor Workshop £4.50). Please send in a cheque (made payable to Boxgrove
Primary School) or cash in a clearly marked envelope with your child’s name, class and name
of the trip to the School Office by 29 January 2016. Alternatively you may pay using our
online payment system at www.scopay.com/boxgrove.
Pupils will not be excluded from the visit because parents are not in a position to contribute,
but as we are not able to fund the activity in any other way it will be cancelled unless we cover
costs. If you are experiencing financial difficulty and would like to discuss payment of this trip
please contact Miss McIllroy, Junior School Leader, via the School Office.
Please notify the School Office by email if there have been any changes to the contact details
or medical information on our records and authorised on the Parental Consent Form.
Yours sincerely

IDEAS FOR TUDOR COSTUMES
Please do not spend money on costumes; hopefully you will have items around the house
that you could use. Here are some ideas:
DRESSING AS TUDORS
All Tudors need a white shirt or Smock as an under garment. See if your Granny or Mum
has a peasant blouse, they are perfect!
POOR FEMALE TUDORS Ladies wear linen caps. Everybody had their heads covered
whether they were rich or poor. You will need a long petticoat and long skirt. If you have
a waistcoat, this will do as a bodice. Wear a leather belt to tuck your apron in. Aprons
are made from a rectangle of cloth. To make a cap, you need a triangle of white cloth to
tie around your head. Make sure you tuck all the ends in. Make a pouch to hang from
your belt from the pattern provided. Wear a cloak or shawl to keep you warm.
RICH TUDOR FEMALES You will need a smock or under tunic, petticoat and linen
headscarf the same as poor Tudors. Wear a long skirt as an under skirt and an over skirt
that allows everybody to see your under skirt. If you have a top or light jacket with puffy
or long draped sleeves, to cover your under dress, this would be perfect. Wear a cap on
top of your linen headscarf. Small earrings and necklaces can also be worn. Use your
imagination or have a look at photos and paintings of rich Tudors online or in reference
books.
POOR TUDOR BOYS You will need a white under shirt, waistcoat and breeches that come
just below the knee and a cap for your head. Wear a leather belt around your middle and
make a pouch to hang from it. Wear long woolly socks or woolly tights if you wish, to
keep your legs warm and a cloak in case it’s really cold.
RICH TUDOR MEN You will need a white undershirt, long woolly socks or tights, a cap and
leather belt. Your Trousers should be puffy and come just above or below your knees.
Your jacket can have puffy sleeves, but it must be flared and cover your bottom. Have a
cloak for winter to keep you warm. Beards and moustaches were very popular in Tudor
times.
