Farewell to our kindy kids going to school—Amelia, Amieka, Declan, Jesse and Sophie
Children have been very involved in our focus on Dinosaurs this term. Activities have included naming,
recognising and learning facts about many different types of dinosaurs. It has extended to many areas of our
curriculum - e.g. constructing, painting, literacy table, puzzles and maths concepts. We set up a dinosaur
cave which promoted imaginative play and children set up a T-Rex cave outside. Palaeontologist and extinct are
some new words we have learnt and we are starting to talk about “endangered animals”.
Olympic focus was learning about different flags in the world - colours, how many stars, same and different
and how to say goodbye in Italian, Spanish and Chinese.
Compost is ready to be dug into the garden and we will start the process again to learn that it helps the soil
grow strong, healthy vegetables. Outside children are enjoying the obstacle courses and are working together
to construct them. They are developing skills such as problem solving and experimentation and co-operating
and contributing ideas in a group project.
We have been using our new area and children are enjoying Olympic sports - Long jump, and running, its a
great area for running!
Phonological awareness activities have included initial letters of the dinosaurs, and how many syllables (claps)
they have e.g. ty-rann-o-saur-us Rex has 6 claps.
We have brought some new musical instruments - drums, tambourines, and a ukulele. Activities have included listening games, playing in a band and learning about rhythm and beat - e.g. running, walking, skipping
and galloping to the beat.
Outcome 3: engaging in complex gross motor skills.
Outcome 4: developing skills
to problem solve/trail and error
Outcome 2: Chidren are broading their understanding of
different languages around the

WHAT IS PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS?
Phonological awareness is the ability to detect and analyse the sound structure of language, children who have phonological awareness
can:

Break words into syllables

Rhyme words

Say the beginning sound of a words

Say each sound in the word
They have an awareness of the sounds of language and the ability to hear and identify sounds.
Phonological awareness is one of the emergent literacy skills and the majority of children experiencing difficulty with literacy have been found to have poor phonological awareness skills
ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
Syllable awareness

Count the beats/syllables in children’s names

Count beats/syllables in fruit, vegetables and objects around the room

Step out syllables

Segment a multisyllabic word and children need to blend the word together e.g. el-e-phant
Rhyme awareness

Expose children to nursery rhymes and songs, encourage chorused reading

Read books that empathise a reading pattern. Start with books that have one rhyming pattern
i.e. Words

Identify rhyming works in songs, nursery rhymes and books
